bedroom tour

by Kaylah Stroup October 4, 2016
lapel pin collection

I’ve been living in my apartment for just under two years now… and I’m finally ready to show y’all my bedroom. Well, as ready as I’ll ever be. In my last apartment my bedroom was the last room I shared photos of, and in the house I owned before that I don’t think I ever shared photos of the bedroom. I’m going to toot my own horn here, I’m good at decorating living rooms. Seriously, look at my living room. It’s adorable. Bedrooms though… they stump me! They always end up getting all the odds and ends that don’t work in other rooms, so they become this mish-mash of furniture and decorations that don’t quite go together.

Right now my excuse is that I don’t plan on staying here much longer. There’s no point in buying any new furniture because I’d move tomorrow if the right place presented itself. That’s also the exact reason why I wanted to take the time to document this space. It may not be the neatest bedroom, or the most beautifully decorated bedroom, which has absolutely been a factor in my not sharing it. It’s not the kind of room I’m going to find plastered all over pinterest but it’s my room. It’s where I’ve been sleeping for the last year*, having Netflix marathons, and devouring pizzas with my dude. It’s an important piece of my history.

The white cabinet is not mine. It’s attached to the wall, in what I feel is the most random place ever. Just one of the joys of renting!

where I work…

by Kaylah Stroup September 1, 2016

For basically as long as The Dainty Squid has had a space on the internet I’ve been sharing photos of what where I work looks like. I’ve moved around a lot, and even when I’m in the same space for a long-ish period of time I rearrange almost constantly. It keeps me sane. I often browse my own archives and I always enjoy looking back at what my surroundings looked like at any given time. If anything, I wish I would have taken more photos of my previous spaces.

At the very end of last year I moved my office into this small room, which was previously my bedroom. The other room, my now bedroom, was just a little too big for me. Switching the two was a great decision that I haven’t thought twice about. My furniture, on the other hand, is something I can’t get off my mind. My big glass top desk was just a little bit too large, not just for the space but for me. I didn’t need all that room. It always ended up becoming home to a pile of papers or other random misplaced items.

One evening a few weeks back I had the idea of switching my glass desk around with my sewing desk. I wasn’t sure if it would work or not just because the room has a bit of a strange layout with low windows, and an awkwardly placed closet buuuut it didn’t matter – I had to give it a go. The sewing desk is literally so heavy that I had to lay down on my back and push it around with my legs. For about two hours the whole back side of my apartment was a disaster zone, and I’m sure I looked nuts but it worked out wonderfully! The smaller desk is much better suited to be my computer desk, especially since it has nice little cubbies for all my knick knacks!

The glass top desk juuuust fits into the opposite corner of the room. I didn’t include any full photos of it because there’s nothing on it. It’s kind of just a randomly placed desk right now. I’m thinking of making it my “mail center” when the weather cools down and I get back into snail mail. For now I really enjoy how tidy it looks with nothing on it.

To be completely honest, most days I work from my new favorite coffee shop. I’m very easily distracted so if there are dishes in the sink, if there is a dog begging to be pet, or a floor that needs vacuumed – I’m going to do that instead of work at my computer. In the last few months I’ve found coffee shops to be exactly what I need in terms of a place to work without distraction. I can sit down and just kill my to do list without thinking about anything else I “need” to do.

I never really thought I’d end up being one of those people that works from a coffee shop but there’s something to it! The amount of time I’ve been spending there compared to the amount of time in this room definitely has me thinking about my next apartment and if I actually need a dedicated office. Only time will tell, and I’m sure I’ll change my mind fifty six times but for now I have a really cute little office space that I enjoy.

on my deck – summer 2016

by Kaylah Stroup June 6, 2016
colorful succulents, propagation

Last year was my first year in this apartment with it’s cozy little second floor porch. When the weather warmed up, I moved my plants that weren’t looking so hot outside since my office was getting crowded. Much to my surprise, they thrived. After that I ended up moving the rest of my plants outside as well. Everything flourished! On top of that I learned to propagate. It’s safe to say, last year was a good year for me as a gardener. I grew a lot of plants, and I learned a lot about those plants.

Ohio winters are cold, duh!, so all my plants had to come in for the year when the temperatures started to drop again. Almost everything survived the season but they were definitely suffering the consequences of less light. A lot of them had grown dull and leggy. I was anxiously awaiting the day I could trim everything back, pluck off leaves for propagation, and get my plants their color back.

Well, summer weather has officially hit here in Cleveland. With temperatures in the 80’s, this is the perfect weather for my plants. I finally kinda sorta organized my little collection and thought it’d be fun to share some photos of them at the beginning of the season. Plants change so drastically over a season but it happens so slowly that if you’re checking them every single day you might not notice. That’s the number one reason I take so many photos of my plants. I mean, other than the fact that they’re gorgeous. It’s encouraging to be able to compare two photos and see how big they’re getting. So here’s what they’re starting off June looking like…

leaves, succulents

Right after I took everything outside we got a few big rains which I’m pretty sure killed a handful of the leaves I had laid out to propagate. It’s a bummer but not all that big of a deal considering how many others I have growing. I seriously have more leaves than I can shake a stick at. If you’re in the CLE area and would like to trade some babies, by all means holler! We can get coffee and swap succulents!

Other than that, in the short amount of time they’ve been outside everything seems to be really perking up. They LOVE the sunshine and I sure love the variety of colors I’ve got going on out there. I kind of wish I had a better way to display everything other than on my only table and a side table but since I’m hoping *fingers crossed so hard* to move before summer’s end I don’t really want to invest in anything I might not be able to use in another apartment. Things will get even more out of hand once some of my babies get a little larger too. Oh well, it’s not going to stop me from growing even more plants, and purchasing interesting ones I stumble upon.

Last year I shared a similarly title post, on the deck, with photos of what I had growing at the time. You can spot a lot of the same plants from that post in this one, although many of the succulents are unrecognizable due to me stealing their leaves to grow more plants. One in particular I find interesting is the big cactus. I didn’t realize just how much that thing had grown! I’m considering transplanting it to it’s own pot since it’s doing SO well.

Other than all these crazy plants, I’m also growing some herbs which are gosh darn life changing. Fresh basil is the bomb dot com. I’m basically putting it on everything I cook. It’s so delicious and I swear food tastes twice as good when you know that something you grew yourself is in it. What are you guys growing this year?

I’m sure I’ll be back next month, or sooner, with an update on these guys. Hope you’re prepared for a summer of succulent photos!
xoxo

where I work

by Kaylah Stroup February 10, 2016
computer, blogger, office

At the very end of 2015 I moved my office into the room that was my bedroom, and my bedroom into the room that was my office… and it was probably one of the best decisions ever. I’ve been living in this apartment for just over a year and from the beginning, I was really unhappy with my bedroom. It was way too small, and I hated that my side of the bed had to be up against the wall in order for the bed to fit without interfering with any of the doors in the room. Such a pain in the butt to make the bed everyday! I was convinced that the much larger room had to be my office though. It has gorgeous light, and lots of space. After not having a dedicated room for my office in my last apartment, I think taking the biggest room in my new apartment was my way to make up for it.

Eventually the bedroom situation got on my last nerve, and my big office wasn’t really my favorite anymore either. It’s significantly colder in that room, and to be honest, I’ve always been a bit of a nest-er. I enjoy cozy, warm, secure feeling spaces which is basically the complete opposite of what that space was. It was just too big. I don’t why it took me so long to finally figure out “hey, I could totally just switch the two!” but the second I did I got right to work.

office inspiration, blogger

The switcheroo was quick, and painless. Even before getting completely settled in I knew it was the right decision. My new bedroom is cool, and I no longer dread making the bed everyday. My new office is compact, cozy, and warm. Because my bed took up so much space in this small room, I wasn’t sure what furniture I would be able to bring over from my old office While the lockers were completely out of the question, I set up my desk in the corner of one side and dragged my sewing desk in to put on the opposite side.

I also made room for a handful of plants. This room gets, possibly, even better light than my old room. I guess I never really paid all that much attention since at the time it was simply a place to sleep, I wanted nothing more to do with it. Professor loves it too because he now has access to a kitty height window he can chirp at birds from all day long. It’s a win/win.

I love this new set up! I still don’t know why it took me so long to think of this solution. I’ll share photos of the bedroom soon. It feels a little bit less put together than I’d like though. Part of me know it’s because I’m not 100% in love with living here anymore so why put the effort into “finishing” the room? Regardless if I’ll be moving in the next few months or not, I know that I’d really like some photos of the bedroom to look back upon. Maybe I just need a comforter or something to get my butt into gear!

This year I…

by Kaylah Stroup December 31, 2015
played in tide pools for the first time ever.
got a big fat crush on Toronto!
explored lots of interesting places people left behind.
grew lots and lots of plants.
tried more new foods than ever, and even kind of fell in love with cooking.
got to cross off a really silly goal that meant a whole lot.
then celebrated with a spur of the moment road trip tattoo.

started helping Anji out at the flower shop on occasion.

made the beach a cleaner place one neatly organized arrangement at a time.
made pals with lots of new critters including the always adorable Foxy Lady, and Tramp, and some friendly squirrels along the coast.
fell even more deeply in love with both the desert, and my favorite adventure partner.
did some highly questionable things like moving a mattress and lockers on top of Jason’s car.
spent a great deal of pedaling, a lot of the time just to go sit at the beach.
moved into a new apartment.
got back into one of my favorite hobbies.
experienced some truly magical sunsets, my favorite being in Morro Bay.
bought a new car two days before the end of the year!

And oh so much more!

For the past few years I’ve been doing a “This year I…” post. See 2011, 2012, 2013, +2014.

where I work…

by Kaylah Stroup June 3, 2015

I’ve been living in my “new” apartment for around four months now. It took a while but I’m finally at a point with my office where I’m super happy with how it’s shaping up. My apartment has two bedrooms. I took the larger of the two for my office. Partly because why would I need to sleep in such a large room? But mostly because the evening light is perfect in here. I’m definitely most productive in the morning but the lighting in here as the sun starts to go down is so relaxing and a boost to my energy level.  Bonus points for the fact that my plants are absolutely thriving in this room.

The newest addition to this room, and what finally made it feel finished to me was adding a second desk. After I started sewing again I realized having a second desk was a necessity. I didn’t feel comfortable sewing on the glass top of my computer desk and it was annoying to have to always be scooting my computer and papers out of the way. The right side of the room was a bit heavy anyway so adding the second desk to sew at not only gave me more room to work but balanced out the room.

Just like every other room in my apartment, other than my living room, I still wouldn’t consider it 100% finished. I’m sure there will be lots of little changes here and there for as long as I live here but for right now, I love it! It’s fun to have so much space dedicated to work. As much as I loved the office in my last apartment, working in a corner of the living room wasn’t exactly ideal. This is my favorite office space to date!
