what I’ve been reading…

by Kaylah Stroup March 16, 2017

Without a doubt, buying a Kindle was one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. Throughout the years I’ve gone through different phases with reading. For the longest time I hated reading (thanks to being forced to read things I didn’t like in school) then I read obsessively. The last two years my numbers have been pretty low but things have definitely taken a turn since buying a Kindle. I’m finally at a point where I feel like I’m reading the perfect amount for me!

I swear I read so much faster on my Kindle, and the fact that I’m never without a book kind of rules. I can’t tell you how many times in the past I’d be somewhere, finish a book, and not have a new one to start but still have to carry around the weight of the one I finished. Books obviously aren’t that heavy but in my mind as soon as I’ve finished it it’s just dead weight, ya know? Now I basically always have at least three new books ready to read as soon as I finish my current and it adds no extra weight to my bag! I really can’t say enough good things about the Kindle Paperwhite. If you’re on the fence just go for it, you’re going to love it!

What I’ve been reading…
▴  Playing Dead: A Journey Through the World of Death Fraud by Elizabeth Greenwood. Think the idea of faking your own death is exciting? Me too. That’s why I chose to read this book. Don’t worry though (Hi Mom!) this kind of changed my thoughts on the whole idea. In this book you read about lots of different people from the guy who helps folks fake their own death -for a handsome fee, of course – to the guy in charge of investigating whether or not someone is actually dead to the people who tried faking their death, and obviously failed for one reason or another. It was a super interesting read!

▴ Smoke Gets in Your Eyes by Caitlin Doughty. For the longest time people have been telling me to read this book. I hesitated because I honestly couldn’t remember if I had read it or not already since I’d read so many books on the funeral industry. At some point they kind of all just blur together. I finally downloaded it on my Kindle and within a few pages I realized I definitely had not read it before. I was in love with her writing immediately. The book was filled with bits of morbid humor but also lots of interesting ideas that really make you think. While telling her story, which is interesting enough on it’s own, Caitlin Doughty makes so many important points about how our culture views, and essentially tries to hide death. If you read one book on the funeral industry, make it this one!

▴ Riding Fury Home by Chana Wilson. This is a memoir by a woman who had a really rough childhood. Her mother was suicidal and she basically had to become the parent since her mother wasn’t able to take care of herself any longer. Many years later she learns that her mother’s anguish was because was in love with another woman. This wasn’t exactly a time in history when coming out as a lesbian was accepted and her mom dealt with some really horrible things in mental hospitals because of it. That’s the first half of the book. The second half is the author’s relationship with her mother as an adult after learning her story. I enjoyed the first half of the book. It was a little depressing, of course, but otherwise interesting. The second half of the book kind of dragged on and on for me though.

▴ Dreamland: Adventures in the Strange Science of Sleep by David K Randall. This book is a super interesting look at one of the most important parts of everyone’s life – sleep! I loved this book and came away with a ton of factoids to ramble at Jeff about. I would recommend this book if you’re a fan of Mary Roach. I mean, he’s no Mary Roach, duh, but I’d venture to guess if you like her books you might like this one too.

▴ Sex Object by Jessica Valenti. I had really high hopes for this book. Everywhere I looked I was being recommended that I read it. Basically every book I looked at on Amazon was like “Oh, you like this book? TrySex Object!” I’m not sure what I expected but I spent most of my time reading this wishing it was over because it made me feel uneasy. I probably wouldn’t recommend this one.

I woke Professor up specifically for this photo. You are welcome.

What have you been reading?

project 365 : days 65 – 71

by Kaylah Stroup March 13, 2017
65 : 365 I recently started (and very quickly tore through) Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. I’ll save my full review for the next “What I’ve Been Reading” post but I will tell you that I absolutely looooved it, and that you should probably just start reading it now.

Last Monday is also the day I picked up The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild from my po box. I don’t even have the words to explain how much I love this game. I like it so much it might have even knock Ocarina of Time to my number two spot! Whaaaa!?
66 : 365 Just an owl I live with.

67 : 365 My mom came out to spend the day with me. We shopped, ate, and got cute photobooth pictures taken.

68 : 365 I wish I could reach into this photo and tie Klaus’ bandana. Drives me nuts when it comes undone.
69 : 365 A rare photo of Squid and Professor together. Both are cats that love to snuggle, just not with each other for some reason. They are united by their love of string tied to the broom dangling over their head though – which is what they’re looking at.
70 : 365 Jeff and I took a quick weekend trip to Pittsburgh. It ended up being kind of a bust. The weather was much much colder than we had planned for, and we got shot down at every abandoned spot we tried for. We even got yelled at by a mustachioed old man who placed his hand on his hip to casually flash a gun. Bro, we’re two harmless people with cameras. Chiiiiill. Anyway, the highlight of the trip was Ace Hotel! Our room was insanely cute, and all the little details were precious. I’m definitely interested in staying at other Ace Hotel locations!

71 : 365 Oh, no biggie, just my skeleton modeling one of my plants.

Hope your week is off to an excellent start!

listening, watching, reading

by Kaylah Stroup August 31, 2016

Twice in the past I’ve shared posts titled “listening, watching, playing” (Find them here + here) This mini series of sorts started after a reader recommended something similar to my what I’ve been reading posts, except with movies, shows, music and more. It’s been a while since my last installment, long enough that I’m finally listening and watching different things, so I figured it was time for an update!

Listening
According to last.fm I’ve been listening to a lot of AFI…because apparently I’m fifteen again. The Art of Drowning has just been on repeat. There are very few albums out there that I can listen to and enjoy the whole thing and this is one of them. A few others, off the top of my head, include Taking Back Sunday’s Tell All Your Friends, all Man Man albums, and most recently, Aesop Rock’s The Impossible Kid.

I’m still really into Spotify’s recommended playlist, Discover Weekly, that they make at the beginning of each week. Some weeks it’s way off but the majority of the time I find at least a handful of new songs to listen to on repeat. As someone who gets stuck in patterns of listening to the same thing over and over again, it’s fun to hear a variety of new things.

Watching
Like everyone else in the world, I watched and thoroughly enjoyed Stranger Things. I’m impatiently waiting for season two. What else on Netflix have I been watching?
Jane the Virgin – why do I love this show so much!?
Animism – a documentary about people who love objects. Yep...
Shameless – Why, oh why aren’t the rest of the seasons on Netflix? I’m obsessed.
St. Vincent – Caused me to ugly cry. It was a good one, for sure.

Other than that, I was excited to find that there was a new season of Expedition Unknown available to stream. I don’t have cable or anything, just Netflix, so I’m always a season behind on things. Josh Gates is basically the best TV show host, ever. He’s hilarious, super smart, and adorable. I’m pretty sure Jeff and I both want to be him. In this show he investigates legends and mysteries, often looking for lost treasure or lost cities. I wish there were unlimited episodes (…and that him and Guy Fieri were hosts of every TV show because I love them so very much.) If there is only one thing from this post that you check out make it Expedition Unknown!

Nearly forgot to add, RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars season two! So many of my favorite queens are back. Ahhh! I don’t even know who I’m rooting for yet!

book review,

Reading
I’m trying SO hard to get back into reading. I don’t know that I’ll ever get back to how much I used to read but anything is better than nothing. I hit up Half Priced Books the other day hoping to get lucky and score Mary Roach’s new book, Grunt, for cheap. Sadly, they didn’t have it in stock but I did manage to find a few other books that sounded interesting and were super affordable. With a little pile of new books, I found a renewed enthusiasm for reading. I’ve even spent a few evenings at the beach reading while the sun set.

I’m currently over three-quarters of the way through Prude by Emily Southwood… and loving it! In my past what I’ve been reading posts I’ve expressed my interest in anything to do with sex work, so immediately this book had my attention. It’s about a woman whose fiance lands a job filming a reality show about porn, and her struggle to accept it. The author’s writing is humorous and although, I don’t know that’s it’s meant to be, it’s thought provoking. If it sounds like something you’d be interested in, I definitely recommend it!

So, what have you been listening, watching, reading, playing, etc? I’m always looking for recommendations.

What I’ve been reading…

by Kaylah Stroup January 13, 2016

Well, it’s kind of been a while since I’ve blogged about books, huh? I, of course, missed reading but I’m sure you all know it’s easy for the habit to fall to the wayside. The fact that it’s bubble bath season (basically every other night, all winter long baby!) coupled with taking the train downtown a few times a week means I’ve had a lot more time to read than normal. It’s kind of like a snowball too, the more time I spend reading the more I want to read.

What I’ve been reading…
▴ Library of Souls by Ransom Riggs. It’s the third book in the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children series, which I’m sure you’ve probably seen me reference before. I’m not sure I can pick a favorite from the three. They were all great! I honestly can’t recommend these books enough. If you haven’t read them yet, stop reading this post and get to it! …Before the movie comes out this December! Ahhh! Tim Burton, you guys!

▴ Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson. I read Jenny’s first book, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, and LOVED it. So when Amazon was all “hey, that author you loved that book by is writing another one!” I was pumped. Awesomely enough a very kind person offered to send it my way (Thank you, Sarah!) As soon as it showed up I basically spent the next three nights in the tub, getting pruny, and devouring this book. Furiously Happy is more a collection of writings by the author than one single piece that flows. There were certain parts I enjoyed more than other but the simple fact is it made me laugh, it made my cry, and I still feel a great deal of respect for Jenny. This book definitely isn’t for everyone but if you liked her first one definitely give this one a try too!

▴ Suits Me : The Double Life of Billy Tipton by Diane Wood Middlebrook. This book has been hanging out on my bookshelf for a pretty long time. I just kept putting it off for one reason or another but finally started it last week. In full disclosure, I haven’t finished it yet but it’s a pretty crazy story so far. Jazz pianist Billy Tipton was born Dorothy Tipton which nearly no one knew until he died. This guy married multiple women who claimed to not know! I’m not 100% sold on the author, it seems like her writing might eventually lose my interest but the story itself is very intriguing. I can’t wait to see what happens.

▴ The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. I feel like I’m not allowed to give an honest review on a classic. I have been staring at my computer for a little while now trying to figure out what to type about The Bell Jar. It kept me interested for a little while but after a while it felt repetitive, and I was basically just reading to finish it and so that no one would talk to me on the train. But hey, I’m glad I finally read the book.

What have you been reading? I’m always looking for recommendations! Normally I have a pretty large collection in my to-read pile but I’ve nearly finished them all up. I need some new books in my life.
xoxo

listening, watching, playing

by Kaylah Stroup August 27, 2015

Back in February I did a little post called “listening, playing, watching” where I just shared a little about the things I was up to. In a reader survey at the very beginning of the year a few people expressed interest in a series of posts similar to my “what I’ve been reading” posts except with television, movies, and video games. I was really happy with how that post turned out. It’s not something I can do super often though because I’m a creature of habit and I’ll usually be watching, and listening to the same thing for months at a time. It finally feels like it’s been long enough to do another edition.

Listening
Not too long ago I discovered The Front Bottoms and according to last.fm I’ve listened to their songs 1,279 times in the last three months. I’m not sure if that fact packs enough of a punch until you see that my second most played band, Why?, has only been played 631 times in the last three months (which is still a lot!) Yeah, so needless to say, I’m super into them. I wish I could recommend just one song but I love everything. Give them a listen for sure!

Also, Spotify recently added a feature where they make you a little playlist of music they think you might like at the beginning of each week and I’m a little embarrassed to say I look forward to getting my new playlist every Monday. It’s ridiculously accurate. I’ve discovered lots of new artists and songs I enjoy. Nothing that will become my new favorite but it’s super helpful as someone who does get stuck in patterns of listening to things. It’s fun to hear things that I actually enjoy and don’t have to search hard for.

Watching
I’ve been on a movie kick lately. I have HBO GO on my apple tv and I think I’ve basically watched every movie on it. Sewing does that to me. If I’m sitting in front of my sewing machine, I am watching a movie. A few that I’ve enjoyed recently for the first time : Feardotcom, Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter is Dead, Gone Girl, Hell Baby, Inspector Gadget,  My Favorite Martian, Neighbors, and The Other Woman. Inspector Gadget, and My Favorite Martian are both things I feel like should have been part of my childhood but some how I missed them (or just don’t remember them at all) but they immediately feel like the kind of movie I’ll want to watch when I’m feeling under the weather. Please say you have a list of movies you like to watch when you’re sick too! My list include basically all Jim Carrey movies, Beetlejuice, and Jumanji.

As for TV shows Jeff and I are in the middle of watching Wayward Pines which is way weird. He’s read the books, which is why we started watching, but I’m still totally out of the loop with whats happening. I’m definitely enjoying it though.

Oh! Oh! Oh! And even though it was a little while back it’s worth mentioning that if you’re looking for a documentary on Netflix I recommend An Honest Liar. We actually turned it on because the movie we had just started was making a funny sound and we wanted to see if it was the movie or the tv itself. We switched An Honest Liar on and some how immediately got sucked in. I literally don’t think I’ve ever loved a documentary so much!

Playing
Adventure Time Puzzle Quest. Downloading this game was the biggest mistake… in the world. You’re battling characters while working your way through a map. Each one of your moves hurts the opponent a certain amount. You can use treasures you find to level up your characters. The reviews on the game are kind of mixed since it does have some glitches. Regardless, it’s way more fun than I was expecting! I downloaded it late one night while in bed because I couldn’t sleep and now I’m playing like every second I can. Sorry in advance if you download it and waste a ton of time.

I’m actually still playing Hyrule Warriors. I got it for Christmas last year, and somehow I’m still finding new quests to do? I purchased the expansion pack a few months back which was twenty bucks and it added about one billion more hours of game play. I feel like I’m kind of stuck now though. I need to level up characters I don’t care about before being able to beat levels that will unlock other levels but I still play regularly. I can’t say enough good things about this game. I wish all video games had this much content!

Aaaaand that’s that! What have you been listening to, watching or playing that’s worth talking about? I’m always looking for suggestions.
xoxo

listening, playing, watching

by Kaylah Stroup February 19, 2015
On my 2015 blog reader survey at the beginning of the year I asked for specific post ideas that you guys would be interested in seeing. I actually had few people express interest in a series of posts similar to my “what I’ve been reading” posts except with television, movies, and video games. Definitely a fun idea so here we go!

Listening
In my monthly recap posts you probably might have noticed that I get stuck in musical loops. I will listen to a band over and over and over until I can’t stand it anymore. That’s actually pretty common with me and anything – when I discover something I like, I am obsessed. When I realized I liked iced chai, I drank it like my life depended on it. Orange chicken? I’ve been to the mall more in the last few months, just to get chicken, than I’ve been there in the past few years combined. Music is the same way.

Lately I’ve just been listening to LOTS of Aesop Rock, and even more Tim Kasher. It’s kind of funny because I always say I hate sad music, and Tim Kasher’s lyrics are gut-wrenching but it’s all so catchy! I just can’t stop. I’ve always liked Cursive but only recently gotten into his solo stuff. LOVE IT.

Aesop rock is always in my rotation of music. Definitely one of my all time favorites, standing beside Man Man and Why?. The last few weeks though I’ve been obsessed with Labor Days. Something clicked and even though I’ve heard it a hundred times before I was like “THIS IS THE BEST ALBUM EVER” I’m gonna need it on vinyl, asap.

We actually got to see Aesop Rock last week, along side Rob Sonic and DJ Abilities. It was nothing short of amazing. I’d been checking his website on an almost weekly basis for SO long waiting for tour dates to show up and shortly before Christmas a Cleveland date showed up. Looks like he’s on tour for about another month. You should probably try to go…

Homeboy Sandman is also touring with them. This was my first time hearing him and I wasn’t sold. It was almost like every other song was something that might be able to grow on me and the others I didn’t like…at all. When I came home I looked him up on Spotify to give his music another chance.  I basically still feel the same way but I might be obsessed with . According to last.fm I’ve listened to it, uh, 30 times in the last seven days. Haha.

Playing.
Since Christmas I’ve been playing Hyrule Warrior. I wasn’t actually too excited about it. I normally buy new LoZ games as soon as they come out but I was perfectly happy just waiting for Santa to bring this one. It might not have been marketed as the next big Zelda game for WiiU but it’s probably my favorite since Majora’s Mask. This game rules, there’s just so much to do. The fact that I’ve been playing since Christmas should be some indication of that. You can play in a few different modes, as different characters, and you get to collect items and upgrade weapons. Since most of the levels are fairly short (less than twenty minutes) you can sit down, play a level and not ruin your whole day sucked into a game. Seriously, such a blast!

Watching
Jeff and I just finished watching the fourth season of American Horror Story. I got an apple TV not too long ago and never really did anything with it other than watch Netflix. We just discovered we could log into Jeff’s cable and watch all those channels too so we can finally watch AHS. When we realized we could do this and that it would actually play we paused it and both looked at each other. He said something like “Can we just talk about how exciting this is!?” It was a really cute moment.  Anyway, this season was definitely better than last. It had it’s moments when I was just like “no! what?!” but it was enjoyable.  Now that we’ve finished that I’m not sure what we’ll start. Any TV series recommendations? Curling up in bed with Jeff, and all the animals (Yes, you heard that right! All the animals!) to watch it is always one of my favorite parts of the day.

And that’s what I’ve been listening to, playing and watching! What about you?
 xoxo

What I’ve been reading…

by Kaylah Stroup January 26, 2015
I didn’t make a reading goal this year, I didn’t want to put pressure on myself like that again. I didn’t want it to turn into a number thing, ya know? But I recently plowed through three books… in three days. Hah! I forgot how awesome it feels to get lost in a book!

What I’ve been reading…
Beautiful You by Chuck Palahniuk
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
The Good Nurse by Charles Graeber

Well, let’s get this over with. If you know anything about my reading habits, you know I LOVE Chuck Palahniuk. I’ve been a huge fan since the first book I read of his. I always buy and devour his new books each year. So you’re probably expecting a glowing review… I don’t have one for you. If it didn’t have his name on it I wouldn’t be able to tell at all this was one of his. It. is. awful. That’s the only way to put it. With the release of his last few books fans have been jumping ship saying he just trying to shock readers. I didn’t agree with that until this book. I so desperately want to give you some examples but honestly they’re too raunchy. I would be embarrassed to share them and it takes a lot to make me feel awkward. I don’t mind explicit sexual details in books, in fact I love them, but this book just crosses a line. I 100% would not recommend Beautiful You. It’s nothing short of train wreck. Looking for a good read by Mr. Palahniuk? Try Rant instead.

I’m a little late jumping on the fan train for Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children but I now see what all the fuss is about! I guess “teen fiction” is what kept me away… and that was dumb. This book is AMAZING. Easily in my top ten books. It’s a quick read that is incredibly easy to get lost in. The story is enthralling and if that wasn’t enough it includes real vintage photos that actually inspired the story. If you haven’t read this already, you should probably get on that… right away!!

I think it was Alexandra that originally recommended The Good Nurse to me, and apparently she understands my taste in books! The Good Nurse is the true story of Charlie Cullen who was dubbed by the media as “The Angel of Death”. He was a nurse who killed his patients, except they weren’t mercy kills at all. He just enjoyed killing.  Charlie worked at nine different hospitals, eight of which he was only let go of for making “errors”. That was the hospitals way of saving their own butts, they just turned a blind eye. It’s a super interesting read and a slightly frightening one as well! I highly recommend The Good Nurse.

What have you been reading? I’m always looking for recommendations!
xoxo
