This, That, and The Dainty Squid

by Kaylah Stroup

You guys, blogging is weird. Blogging “professionally” is even more weird. You’re sharing so much of yourself with a whoooooole bunch of strangers. It can definitely be scary.

Inspiration for this post came while editing some photos that I’m super excited about. I had an incredible day last week where I hit two really awesome spots that I took photos at.  I was seriously on cloud nine. I couldn’t stop smiling or talking about my day. One stop was an abandoned building, and the second a cemetery. It was while I was editing the cemetery photos that I thought “crap, I can’t post these for a while.” Why? Because earlier that week I had already posted about a cemetery. Something told me posting another would be seen as too creepy, weird or …whatever. This has been a thought that occurs way more often than it should for me, and not just about cemetery photos. It’s been weighing on my shoulders for too long.

A few weeks back when I posted photos of the bridge along with a little personal chit chat the response was incredibly positive. It felt good to open up. I never really feel like I’m “hiding” anything from y’all but in the spirit of being completely transparent I guess this has been something I’ve wanted to talk about but have been too afraid to…

Incredible cemetery mentioned above that I’ll share more about later this week…

You may remember I had a reader survey sometime last year. I was really excited to hear more about the things you guys wanted to read, not in the sense like let me pretend I’m interested in this or that to get hits but was there something I’m already doing that you’re interested in learning more about – blogging tips, favorite make-up products, etc. I didn’t want to stop posting about anything, just start posting about other things more. I made sure to pose the questions so that it would be a positive thing. Somehow a number of people still took it as an opportunity to tell me how much they hated essentially everything I had been writing about since moving. One thing that stuck out to me, said by a small handful of people, was how much they hated my posts about abandoned buildings. (Someone also said not to post photos of Klaus because they didn’t like him… wut?!) I took that fairly personally. I totally get that seeing photos of abandoned buildings may not be everyone’s cup of tea but it was almost like the response wasn’t about the fact they didn’t like these photos. It was more that they were sour The Dainty Squid had changed. Why wasn’t I posting about crafty stuff anymore, why did it have to be abandoned buildings on here now?

While this blog is my bread and butter, and I have to take into consideration what people like to some extent. I also have to remember that it’s my blog, I can post about what I’d like because that’s what it’s about. The Dainty Squid is my photo album. It’s my place to write about all the things I’m passionate about, all the things I’m doing, learning, exploring, etc. Those things will always be changing. These past few years The Dainty Squid has definitely changed… because I’ve changed and that’s a real good thing. Right now I’m not crafting as much as I was when I first started this blog. It would be dishonest for me to pretend that I’m still sewing every day and continue to blog about that sort of thing simply because that’s what some people have come to expect. I’ve found many other passions that I now write about!

How could anyone not like this giant baby?!

I guess the whole point of this was to say that you should post about whatever you feel like posting, not what you feel pressured into posting about, that’s what will make your blog stand out from the crowd. I know whenever I mention blog stuff I always talk about how I’ve felt uneasy about not fitting into a specific blogging niche but I’m becoming more and more comfortable with it as time goes on. I like that on The Dainty Squid I can write about a dilapidated building one day and then my favorite bath products the next day because that’s totally me. I like getting dirty, exploring and then coming home to take a bubble bath and do fun nail art. I’m not for everyone, and that’s a-okay with me.

I should clarify that the point of this post isn’t to be a brat and exclaim “I’ll post what I want” but instead, like I mentioned at the beginning of the post, to just get this off of my chest. I don’t want to feel stressed about posting about what I like anymore. It’s been weighing me down for some time. I can’t tell you how good it feels to type this.

To everyone out there who “puts up” with my cemetery posts, abandoned building photos, and diverse and sometimes strange interests because you can respect the fact it’s something I’m passionate about – YOU DA BEST. Thank you so much. To everyone out there reading who just can’t handle those posts anymore – Adios, thank you for reading. No hard feelings, seriously! People grow, and a lot of the time it’s in different directions. Maybe someday our interests will cross paths again!
xoxo

One of the things I appreciate so much about your blog is your range of topics that include cemeteries and abandoned buildings!! I love seeing other parts of the U.S. that I probably will never get a chance to see! Good for you posting what you like and love and I will definitely be back to read more! =) Melanie | Blog: Toots + Dill

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 2:09 pm

Thank you, Melanie! 🙂

Kristina Burkey March 1, 2016 - 2:07 pm

Dude WHAT? I have so much to say.
First of all, bravo for this post. It is totally scary to put yourself out there and then to have an open comments field. I have an ebook on Amazon and stopped reading my comment long ago. People are awful. And I have to tell you, I used to read your blog years ago and stopped (sorry!) Honestly right now I can’t remember why. I feel like you used to post about mushrooms like A LOT. Haha! Then one day I came back here to see if anything was new and LOVE IT! Your blog is one of my favorites! I love your voice, your breadth of subject matter and the abandoned buildings are my FAVORITE! I am such a weenie so seeing your posts gives me peeks into stuff I’m too afraid to do (although I was DYING to go into my high school before they tore it down and my husband wouldn’t let me! Party-pooper…) Keep doing what you’re doing and if people don’t like it they can go read something else. You’ll lose WAY more followers by pretending to be something you’re not. Get it girl! (And seriously who could get too much Klaus?!?! Ugh. People…)

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 2:14 pm

Ughhh, reviews on Amazon can be vicious. I can't even imagine. (Also, didn't know you had an ebook!? I must go find it!)

No, that's totally fine. I get it, blogs I like I go through cycles with. Sometimes it just seems like we have nothing in common and other times it's like they're my long lost twin. It's normal to not love EVERY.SINGLE.THING someone does or writes about but it doesn't give you the excuse to be a dick about it, ya know? I guess that's basically what I wanted to say.

Thanks for being so rad, Kristina! 😀

Kristina Burkey March 2, 2016 - 4:31 pm

Yeah. Just a side thing I did. It's a quick read haha.
Being a dick is totally unnecessary FOR REAL. And yet people do ALL THE. TIME.
You're radder! Xo

trillie March 1, 2016 - 2:20 pm

Wow. People can be so weird. I don't remember exactly what I replied to your survey but I'm sure it was mostly pointing out which stuff I liked and would like to see more of. Who would us that as an invitation to dump on your blog and… your dog?!

Anyway, I LOVE abandoned buildings, cemeteries, and stories about exploring, and if I'm not passionate about nail art or whatever, I can just not read those posts! (radical idea, I know) I love how there's something here for everyone, and I'm glad blogging is still fun for you. It shows!

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 2:32 pm

Dude, right? What was that thought process like? WHO DOESN'T LIKE DOGS!? It's not even random dogs, this is my puppy who I clearly love the heck out of. I know some people would disagree but that, to me, is the equivalent of saying don't post about your child, I don't like them.

Exactly, I'm not trying to force anyone to read anything. I just needed to get that off my chest so I can stop feeling anxiety about posting the things I enjoy.

Thank you so much! 😀

Chelsea March 1, 2016 - 2:21 pm

I can see a huge change in your blog (you). When I first discovered you, I was enamored with your quiet, crafty and colorful life. I loved that so many seemingly small things were celebrated. Believe it or not, people evolve. Therefore, their blogs do too. Having followed you for ages, it's hard not to be proud of you for how far you have come (is that weird to say?). I love your more adventurous lifestyle, your more utilitarian but still colorful wardrobe and that you still celebrate the little things. You seem happier with your life and what you are getting out of it. Please keep sharing your interests with us. Post about cemeteries 5 times in a row if you like. Have an entire posts dedicated to Klause because he is just that awesome. And, girl, share your tragically beautiful abandoned building pictures all you want. Don't let some random internet person who doesn't like dogs (is that even a thing?) get in the way of being your amazing self. ♥

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 2:33 pm

No, that's not weird at all. (It actually might even be one of my favorite things to hear!) Thanks for reading, Chelsea! I appreciate the heck out of you. 😀

Rachel Monk March 1, 2016 - 2:32 pm

Good for you! I love how eclectic your blog is, that's the best part…that and the very handsome Klaus! ALL THE KLAUS!!!! 🙂

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 2:36 pm

Thanks, Rachel! I wish I could respond in comments with photos or GIFS but I can't… so pretend it's the Oprah "YOU GET A CAR" meme and instead she's saying "YOU GET A KLAUS" and then there's lots of photos of Klaus. 😛

a outra mafalda Mafalda Fernandes March 1, 2016 - 2:35 pm

To me your blog is an inspiration because you approach such different topics. ♥ You don't stick with the same thing over and over again. And at the same time we can see how your tastes evolve. Other thing that inspires me a lot in your blog is your photography – either from abandon buildings (which I love but I'm too chicken to explore them), your collections of things found on the beach, the bones, your little corners in your home and your pets.

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 3:01 pm

Thank you so much! 🙂

Fiona March 1, 2016 - 2:36 pm

Totally subscribe to the all post! I have a mini blog, but it's mine. And it's true sometimes I wish I was a bigger blogger, that had more views per day, but to that I believe I had to change a lot of things that I post, a lot of things that I do, and in the end I would end up with a blog that is not mine. I blogged for like 6 years, and my blog also changed a lot, because I grew up, I changed as the years go by, I have more time to do that, or less to that, so I will take more about what I do. For me it has logic. And I know that we have to try to be nice and try to please everybody, but not everybody will be pleased, so in a manner what I'm trying to say it's to forget those who will not like because it's a way to spent lost energy 🙂

And who cannot like Klaus photos? I mean he is such a cute thing!!! 😀

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 3:03 pm

Totally! I definitely don't mind not pleasing everyone, I just wish that it was understood that just because you don't like something doesn't mean you have to be a jerk. 🙂

Amber Renee March 1, 2016 - 2:39 pm

I've loved pretty much everything about your blog since I started reading. Sure I'm not into say, make up and blogging tips, so I just don't read it that day. We can't all have the same interests. And I love all the new subjects! You've totally inspired me to explore abandoned buildings. Oh, and when you got a dog I was so excited for you. Because cats are cute and all but, I'm a total dog person. Most of all I love how fun and honest you are.

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 3:06 pm

Exactly. I really don't expect for everyone to love everything I post. I do expect to be treated kindly though.

Hahah. Thanks so much for being rad. <3

ALSO, tell me about your abandoned buildings! What have you gotten into?

Sammi March 1, 2016 - 2:40 pm

This is so important!!! As much as we'd like to please our readers, I think it's imperative to remember that this is YOUR space and you have to please yourself first! A lot of bloggers feel beholden to their sponsors, and some blogs feel like giant advertisements. I'm so glad yours has never felt that way, even when you feature gifted items or paid content. I'm always so interested to see your posts (even when your interests vary from mine!), and you always present everything in such a beautiful, intelligent way. All I can say is that people are WEIRD and there are always going to be those who feel entitled to your life or how you present it in your public forum (which I'll never fully understand), and you have the right attitude about this subject, 100%.

xoxo Sammi

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 3:09 pm

Thank you so much for being such a sweetheart, Sammi!
<3333

I seriously never want anyone to feel how I've felt about sharing things I love. The whole point of blogging, to me at least, is to cultivate a space that is *ME*, I'm not forcing anyone to read it. If you want something better suited to your interests, start your own blog, ya know?

Cherie in St Louis March 1, 2016 - 2:50 pm

Glad you got that off your chest because you have a unique blend of topics that keeps me interested…if I don't care for a post (polishing fingernails) then I just skip it. Shesh, why do people have to be so mean spirited? I personally don't get enough Klaus pics….and kitty pics either 😉

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 3:10 pm

Thanks for being so awesome, Cherie! 🙂

Kayla Lukawiecki March 1, 2016 - 2:59 pm

Never stop posting photos of Klaus!!! He's adorable!!!

Also, it really blows that something that could be such a bonding, fun survey with your readers gave you so many low blows. Not cool. I for one like the range of topics you cover. It's way more genuine because no one has just one solitary interest. Plus, as a long time reader, it's just great to see how much happier you are now.

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 3:17 pm

I wouldn't think of it. That dog brings me way too much joy to stop posting photos of his silly face just because someone doesn't like him.
😀

Thank you for reading all these years! I know it's kind of a funny feeling to feel like you know someone on the internet since you read so much about them but don't actually know them in person. There are so many people I connect with daily but have never actually met. It's a strange time we live in!

…But it's almost even more weird to have this connection with names that you know NOTHING about. Yours is one I definitely recognize but don't know anything about. I'm gonna go search for you on instagram so I can at least put a face to the name. 😉

Nicole Hokenstad March 1, 2016 - 2:59 pm

ALL PICTURES OF KLAUS!!! MORE abandonded buildingsand cemetaries!!! You do you woman! Sorry, I gor carried away… But seriously, some of my favorite blogs have evolved because the blogger evolved and I think it's great. The people who whine can shove it and go write their own blog, pardon my french. Whatever thing you're into next, I'm stoked to hear about it!

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 3:20 pm

Hahah. Thank you so much, Nicole. I appreciate you more than you know. It always puts a smile on my face to see your comments. 🙂

Nicole Hokenstad March 2, 2016 - 1:07 am

Awww aren't you such a doll?! Glad my horrifying grammar wasn't too off-putting 😉

Mandy March 1, 2016 - 3:01 pm

Wow I love this post and it's so true! I've been following you for ages (I found you after googling my own blog name (www.daintydream.com), such an amazing find!) and I've always loved everything you post. I love your crafts, collections, your house and animals. I can't believe people exist that don't like Klaus! Lol. I do like the cemetery and abandoned building posts, because I love your photography. I love how your blog grows along with you.
Anywayss keep them blogpost coming and I'm a happy reader, lol!

Greetings from The Netherlands!

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:21 pm

Thank you so much, Mandy! Glad ya found me! 🙂

Mieze Schindler March 1, 2016 - 3:06 pm

I like your blog, because it is totally you, its absolutly authentic. Some posts are not so mine, but other post i am excited for. That's life and i absolutly can live with your photos, no matter are they from a cemetry or from your bath.

Lots of Greets,
Linda

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:21 pm

Thank you, Linda! 🙂

B March 1, 2016 - 3:07 pm

I love your blog BECAUSE of all the photos, especially the cemetery photos! It's not something a lot of people blog/write about honestly.

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:22 pm

Well I'm glad to hear that! I would love to find blogs about cemeteries, definitely not something I see very often.

C. March 1, 2016 - 3:13 pm

Great post!
I started reading your blog because of the hair color and DIY posts. I have to admit that I don't usually care about abandoned buildings (it's not a question of me loving or hating them, I just don't think about them: I'm more of a nature kind-of-girl!). And, full disclosure: I don't really like dogs (sorry!)!!!
BUT, I'm still happily reading your blog and appreciate every post! I discovered that old buildings can be very interesting and charming, when photographed skillfully and I really enjoy looking at your amazing pictures. That's a different perspective from mine (if I have to drive for a couple of hours, it wouldn't be to look for a abandoned building, but more to find a deep forest or a deserted canyon) and that allowed me to acknowledge that there is something interesting in places I wouldn't have thought about looking. For that, thank you!
And how can someone be upset about pictures of Klaus?!! It's not like your blog has 100% of dog talks. That's ridiculous! He's part of your life, so he should be part of your blog. And, when people are tired of looking at pictures of him, they should focus on Professor, he's so perfect and precious, no way they can be tired of him 😉
Keep doing what you're doing; this blog reflects who you are and trying to change that for some unhappy readers would be wrong and sound fake.

Something not related: even if I'm following dozens of blogs, yours is the only one where I leave comments for some reason.

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:24 pm

Hahahah. You are correct, Professor is absolutely perfect. I cannot get enough of that silly little cat.

Thank you so much for being so rad. <3

Heather Shoberg March 1, 2016 - 3:23 pm

People are strange to me. Sure, change can be hard, but everyone changes over time and I find it strange that people can get so caught up in a blog that they forget the person behind the blog is a real person and they have feelings and are allowed to grow and change as a person. You're absolutely right that it's your blog and you should blog about what makes you happy and interests you – it's more authentic and your blog should evolve with you. If it bothers some of your readers they should just stop reading and move on, new readers will replace them.

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:24 pm

That's exactly what it is too, people forget that behind every computer screen is a real person.

Sarah March 1, 2016 - 3:25 pm

All the thumbs up. Your blog is awesome because it reflects you and life! People change and grow and take paths they never dreamed they would take. It's really beautiful to see. And on the subject of little klaus, I would love an update on him! How he's doing and how he has turned out. What do you do with him when you are adventuring? I feel guilty every time I leave my pups at home, but then again I am a crazy dog lady.

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:26 pm

That's not a bad idea! I really haven't written too much about it lately, plus it's a good excuse to post cute photos of him. 😉

While I'm out adventuring he's lounging on the couch or in a ray of sunshine with the cats. I don't exactly love leaving him at home either but what are ya gonna do, ya know?

linziloop March 1, 2016 - 3:30 pm

I love the eclectic nature of your blog. I've come to do the same with my blog, and like you, I have always had a little niggling doubt that doing so would probably lose me some followers. I'm ok with that, the blog is more true to me and I feel more comfortable with it.

I actually share quite a lot of the same interests as you so it's never been the case that you've blogged about something I don't want to see. You win some, you lose some 😉

Keep going darling, your blog is a great mix of wonderful things. Stay true xxx

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:27 pm

Thank you so much! You rule! <333

Emily Draher March 1, 2016 - 3:32 pm

I LOVE that you post about what you're passionate about, and totally appreciate that changes as you grow. It would be pretty sad if you never grew, right?!

I have blogged for four years almost exclusively about nail art and nail polish, but in January of this year I completely rebranded to branch out into more topics that I'm passionate about. Make-up, nails, food, home decor, my dog, general almost-30 year old life…I've lost some followers, but the ones that have stuck around are really positive and interactive. And by the way, as I transition into blogging professionally, your site has been mega-inspiring!! 🙂

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:28 pm

Exactly. It would be REALLY REALLY boring and sad if you never grew or changed.

Thank you so much, Emily! <3

prizimz March 1, 2016 - 3:41 pm

The posts I like the most are the ones that you talk about your growing, even your struggles to be the person you want to be. Like the last one about that abandoned building. I was so happy when I read that the fact that you'd be able to talk to that man made everything happen. I feel like a push for me to step out of my comfort zone and see the beautiful things that can happen too 🙂

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:29 pm

Thanks! I really enjoy sharing those. It's kind of embarrassing to talk about how shy I am but it's so much fun to look back and be able to see how much I'm growing. 🙂

Emma Lucy knapton March 1, 2016 - 3:53 pm

Hi Kaylah,

I just want to let you know I've been reading your blog for a few years and I loved every post I've read. It's a glimpse into your wonderful life and I love reading about it. I think it's amazing you get to do what you love. I am going to write to you some time this year but I'm waiting until after I've moved. I also wanted to say thank you for blogging! X

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:30 pm

Thank you so much! You're so kind! <333

Sarah Albertson March 1, 2016 - 4:04 pm

What the heck? Somebody doesn't like Klaus? What a creep, the internet is weird. I totally agree that personal blogs such as yours should change with you and reflect your current interests. I much prefer reading posts when somebody is passionate about something, versus just writing about it because they think it's popular and other people will like it. Even if it's not a subject I am personally interested in, I still find it enjoyable to read because I can really see how much they enjoy it. Like Taxidermy for example! I have never particularly wanted to get into taxidermy, but I find your posts on it really fascinating and neat! I think the world would be a boring place if we only read blogs that share our same exact interests. Keep on doing what you're doing!

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:31 pm

RIGHT? How could you possibly think it's okay to tell someone not to post photos of their dog?

Thank you so much, Sarah. You have always been so kind. I appreciate you so so so much. <333

nila francisca March 1, 2016 - 4:12 pm

I love the cementery posts the most!! like all the "weird" things makes me want to come back and explore and the photos you take are so wonderful !

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:31 pm

I'm so glad to hear that! Thank you!! 🙂

Indy March 1, 2016 - 4:20 pm

I got a bit rage-y reading this. Honestly, who, in the first place, could not like seeing an animal in general, and second of all, who in their right mind WOULD SAY THAT OUT LOUD (or out loud via keyboard)?!?!

Part of the reason I love your blog is because I like YOU as a person! I've never met you in person, but you seem rad as f! Obviously as you grow and change as a person your blog will reflect that! The only thing that didn't change is you posting about things you are passionate about – and that's the way it should be.

Can't wait to see what TDS family is up to next. 🙂

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:32 pm

Haha, right?! Even though it's been like a year I'm still really trying to figure that out.

Thank you so much, Indy! You rule! <3

Tara Hammond March 1, 2016 - 4:25 pm

It sounds like some folks might be hate-reading your blog. Haha! I love everything you post about, even the stuff that I'm not necessarily interested in. And, if I didn't, I would stop reading

I think it's great that you share your life and passions with strangers. Thank you!

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:34 pm

Mhmmm. I really don't understand why anyone in the world would waste time hate-reading? …or why you would hate a stranger? Suuuuch a waste of energy and time.

Thanks, Tara! 🙂

modflowers March 1, 2016 - 4:27 pm

I started reading your blog for the abandoned buildings posts!
I guess you can't please all the people all the time and if you don't want criticism, then don't ask people what they think / want, because there are just so many people dying to wade in and moan about stuff!

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:34 pm

That's awesome, I'm glad you enjoy them. 🙂

Bee. March 1, 2016 - 4:30 pm

I adore this space so much, and am equally inspired by it, because it exudes your passions so I'm so glad you're set on writing about them. Keep at it, you're the best!

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:34 pm

Thank you so much, Bee! <333

Kaitlyn Petry March 1, 2016 - 4:39 pm

Haha I had the same reaction reading this as Nicole, above, never stop posting pictures of Klaus! 😉 One thing I do really appreciate is that you write very respectfully and I do think it's important to say, like on your bridge post, be safe! Anyway, you do you and as your blog shifts, your audience might shift a little with it!

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:35 pm

Haha, so glad to hear so many people like Klaus! <3

Dulce March 1, 2016 - 4:49 pm

I think is absolutely rude to critizice what other posts in their blogs, if you don't like abandoned buildings, you have the option to go away and read something of your taste. I love your pictures, because they have a nostalgic sense, and I'm glad you say this, people should be more respectful, Klaus is just to gorgeous for them!

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:37 pm

Exactly!

Thank you so much! <3

Sabela González March 1, 2016 - 5:08 pm

I guess it's those people who aren't evolving… You don't need that negativity, nobody does.
Stay brave and stay Kaylah, there's no one else that you should be, right?
P.S.- I love your pictures. I'll say more: as a writer marinating a new book idea, I find your abandoned buildings pictures quite inspiring! :*

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:38 pm

That's awesome, whatcha writing about?
🙂

Sabela González March 2, 2016 - 10:34 am

I'm just outlining the idea, so far (still got the 3rd part of a trilogy to finish…), but it'll be about the resistance of an unexpected character in a totalitarian regime (fantasy/sci-fi/a bit steampunky…). It all began in Venice, with that feeling of romantic decadence… the same feeling that seeps from your pics 🙂

C. March 1, 2016 - 5:11 pm

Also, I forgot to add: I love to read about your new found love for food. Good food has a huge place in my life and I'm so happy to see how you're evolving and are more daring. I hope you'll share more experiences soon and maybe some of your favorite recipes.

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:40 pm

Yess, I would love to share some of my favorite recipes. It's definitely on my list of things to blog about.

junebox March 1, 2016 - 5:22 pm

I think it's brave to stay yourself and post about what you're passionate about. You're actually the first blogger I've ever followed, it must have been 5ish years now? And I still check you blog every two days or so. I don't think there was ever a topic I wasn't interested in. I really like what you do since you moved, even though what you did before is what made me want to follow you. Your style (clothing, hair, house, whatevs) inspired me a lot. (I actually have a purple pixie right now haha). You're cool. Keep on changing and evolving. Thank you for everything. 😀
May

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:41 pm

Thanks so much, May! <333

Cheap Glam Sugar Punk March 1, 2016 - 5:33 pm

People are so rude. It's pretty obvious what most of your posts are going to be about, either by the title or the thumbnail. Is it really that hard for people to just skip the ones they might not be interested in?

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:42 pm

Apparently… I don't understand it either.

Jordyn Schwersky March 1, 2016 - 5:35 pm

I'm obsessed with the cemetery and abandoned building photos. Those were actually what brought me to your blog in the first place. I also vote for more teeth and bones. And anyone who doesn't like Klaus is probably not an actual human being.

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:42 pm

That last sentence? SPOT ON. <3

Kaitlin Stainbrook March 1, 2016 - 5:39 pm

It's sort of funny for me to hear that some people don't like your abandoned building posts, because those are my absolute favorite posts that you do and why I started more regularly reading your blog, haha. (Seriously though, aren't abandoned places fascinating? It's like being transported to another world that is still so solidly in this one.) Anyway, just goes to show that what one person dislikes is another person's cup of tea!

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:43 pm

Thanks, Kaitlin. Glad to hear you enjoy them. 🙂

Stephanie Piccirilli March 1, 2016 - 6:19 pm

I've been reading your blog for like, 5 years now and I'm team Dainy Squid for life!!! I love how you've evolved as a person and I love how you've come out of your shell and explored the world around you more. You do you girl!!!

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:44 pm

Hahah. I love you, Stephanie. We need to meet up sometime. <3

Jasilyn Albert March 1, 2016 - 6:36 pm

I find it weird that people are so blatant about what they hate. I follow so many bloggers and I skip the stuff they post that I'm not interested in. I'm not going to take the time to tell them how they should change. And it's weird that they brought your dog into it. I've been blogging since 2011 and even though my blog isn't famous (I mostly just blog for myself) I've gone from a student teaching to home life to expat life blog, so I don't feel like you should worry that your blog is changing. I think throughout your life your passions and interests change and maybe you'll gain new followers because of it. I also love your posts about abandoned buildings! Those are my favorites I think!

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:46 pm

Oh, I'm not worried that my blog is changing. I am always excited to grow and change more. Evolving is so important!

Thanks, Jasilyn! <3

Grace Montgomery March 1, 2016 - 6:40 pm

Dude! All the things people are complaining about are the things I love most about your blog! I've only been reading for the past two years or so, so I don't know how what you were posting about before, but I love the topics you cover. There's a million crafty blogs out there but who posts about taxidermy, and teeth, and beautiful abandoned buildings? You do you! Also, P.S., is it totally weird that in an antique shop I saw a dentist set of tooth enamel (it was like a little case full of fake teeth to showcase the different colors of fake teeth you could choose from) and I really wanted to buy it for you, even though I don't actually know you. It was so cool and I really wanted to share its coolness with someone and you're the only person I could think of that would appreciate it. So don't stop posting about this stuff because then I'll be really alone 😛

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:46 pm

Hahah, I'm so glad that made you think of me. <3

Alexandra March 1, 2016 - 7:13 pm

I would like MORE posts on cemeteries and abandoned buildings please 🙂

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:47 pm

Of course you would! 😛

MFerPhotography March 1, 2016 - 7:13 pm

I have only been reading for the past 6 months so I don't know how much your blog has changed but I absolutely love all the things you post about and you have opened my eyes to products and things I never would have found otherwise. Bonus~ I thought I was the only girl obsessed with cemeteries! Every time I go on vacation I find a cemetery to explore (even Hawaii). Keep being true to yourself. That is what makes you stand out and successful.

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:48 pm

Thanks so much, I'm so glad to hear that!

Oh, me too! You can't go to a new city and not check out their cemeteries! 😛

Morgan Smith March 1, 2016 - 7:54 pm

Wow. People are so weird and can be so hateful. I've been a huge fan of yours since the early years and there are certainly things I miss about those old posts. I miss your other 2 cats and I'm sure you do, too! Guess what? I'm a different person than I was then and we all SHOULD be evolving…it'd feel pretty boring if we didn't. No wonder you have different interests! You've had more life experiences! I'm so excited you are such an adventurous eater now, lol. That's one of the "new Kaylah" things I enjoy 🙂 AND KLAUS! SMH. Any idiot who would write to complain about DOG pictures clearly has some issues. Maybe they should have some macaroons and a crazy taco or 2 🙂 Keep up the great work and let the haters keep on hatin'.

much love to you AND your crew (new and old!)

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:51 pm

Thanks, Morgan. 🙂

Jane March 1, 2016 - 7:55 pm

Just wanted to say a quick thank you for this post and your entire blog. YOU GO GIRL. I love all your posts, no matter the subject, because you always write so passionately about the things you love which makes me happy to have read the post. And Klaus is adorable!

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:52 pm

Thank you so much, Jane! You're the best. 🙂

thecardiffcwtch.com March 1, 2016 - 8:05 pm

No one is ever everyone's cup of tea, all of the time. I love blogs that don't fit into specific niches. I love blogs that stand out and say "You know what? I am my own niche, and that's okay" – and you are totally one of those people 🙂 Keep doing your thing!

Nia

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:52 pm

Thanks, Nia! 😀

Rebecca Turner March 1, 2016 - 8:27 pm

I just came here to say your abandoned building pictures are dope! Where I live now there aren't many unless I drove a ways (Northern Colorado here- it's growing like crazy so not many abandoned places to be found). So I live vicariously through your pictures. 🙂 Plus Klaus is a cutie!! Keep the pet pics coming, screw the haters. It's your space, your blog.

Kaylah March 1, 2016 - 8:53 pm

Thanks, Rebecca. So glad you like them! 🙂

Cecily Hughs March 1, 2016 - 8:56 pm

I love the abandoned building pictures! You've inspired me to want to do the same, although I'm too chicken 🙂

I've been reading blogs for about 9ish years and your blog is one of the few I still read!

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 12:22 pm

Holy smokes. Thank you so much for reading all these years!!! <3

Kaili Willows March 1, 2016 - 9:08 pm

Honestly, your posts are the ones I look forward to the most *because* they do not fit into a specific niche. I personally feel that I can relate to you a lot more than other bloggers that I follow because we have a lot of the same "bizarre/morbid" interests (cemeteries, collecting dead things, abandoned buildings) and it's refreshing for me to see those strange interests of mine in the blogging sphere. At the same time, I still also love fashion & beauty, crafts, and pet photos. I know I'm not the majority here, but the type of content you post is always enjoyable to read. In the few years I've been following your blog, yes the content has shifted a lot – but in my little scope I think it is 100% a good thing! At least from THIS reader – it has made you far more relate-able 🙂

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 12:24 pm

I'm so happy to hear that, Kaili! (Also, so happy to hear there are more of us out there who have weird interests but still love fashion/beauty stuff too!) 🙂

Mariah Martin March 1, 2016 - 9:42 pm

This is a great post and I think that a lot of people pleasers (like me) need to remind themselves that your life is about you, and so is everything you do. If you're not happy, what's the point?

I love how motivated you stay without a boss looking over your shoulder. I have always wanted to start my own business/blog/venture, but it's terrifying. I have been struggling with anxiety for a while now, and I don't feel confident enough to even know which direction I want to go. I would love tips on how you stay on top of your business and stay motivated.

Anyways, thanks for such a great post. You do you!

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 12:27 pm

Mariah, that's actually a really great post idea. I took a screenshot of your comment and jotted down some notes so I could come back to it later.

Thanks! 🙂

Diana March 1, 2016 - 9:46 pm

I've always appreciated that your blog isn't like anyone else's. It's felt very original and genuine to me and that's what I've liked the most over the years. I know that when you review a product or talk about your favorite things or place, you honestly love them. I've always respected your individuality! <3

Thanks a ton, Diana! <3

Zorah March 1, 2016 - 9:48 pm

I love the abandoned building posts! they're so cool. Keep doin' what you're doin'!

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 12:28 pm

Thanks, Zorah! 🙂

Jocelyn March 1, 2016 - 9:57 pm

Kaylah! Can I give you two high fives (way up high)?! I have enjoyed seeing your blog change and seeing how you've changed. I view change as a pretty awesome thing, for the most part. I think it's really awesome to see how people can grow over time.

I'm fairly certain that you could blog about literally anything and I'm probably at least *try* to read it. One thing I love about blogging, meaning, one thing I love about reading other people's blogs, is that it can open you up to things you never knew you were interested in before. Abandoned buildings, for example, never used to be of much interest to me. Now, thanks to you and some other bloggers/photogs, I am so fascinated by them. I have yet to really explore any of them, but I notice them more when I drive by them, or when I pass them in the street. That's cool to me!

And I just have to say, how could anyone NOT LIKE KLAUS?! Seriously. I know I'm a pretty big dog person, but c'mon, he's the cutest! I adore the photos you share of him and your cats. Oh! And those little foxes that your parents were (still are?) taking care of – so friggen cute!

Anyway, please keep doing what you do. I really enjoy this little corner of the Internet 🙂 Cheers!

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 12:32 pm

Thanks, Jocelyn!

That's exactly what I love about blogging too! You explained it perfect. As long as someone is passionate about something I'll give it a look. The blogs I read, for the most part, aren't anything like mine. I like seeing a different perspective, and learning about new things, places and people.

Yeeeeah, me stopping sharing animals photos just isn't going to happen. 😛

Thanks a ton. <333

Lusuna March 1, 2016 - 10:40 pm

Your posts about cemeteries and abandoned buildings inspire me to go out and take interesting photos! I think your blog should reflect your interests, and change isn't necessarily a bad thing. I know my own blog has changed in the past year I've been writing it. Write and photograph what you love, I enjoy reading it and I'm sure the majority of your readers do too xx

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 12:35 pm

Thank you so much, Lusuna! I'm really glad to hear that. 🙂

Laurali Star March 1, 2016 - 11:06 pm

I know I rarely comment on here but I've loved your blog for years. It's rare to find a good nature blogger, which is what I used to do, but yours is one of my faves. Kudos to you for keeping it real. I too have a love of cemeteries and one of my all time favorite posts you wrote was The Salton Sea one. I grew up in that area, had a lot of friends there. Thank you for sharing what feels good to you, rather than a selling point. I dig blogs that can evolve without losing their original appeal. Out of all the bloggers who came from way back when, only you and Skunkboy Blog have kept it authentic. Keep up the great work!

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 12:37 pm

Thanks, Laurali!

Speaking of the Salton Sea, last summer Jeff and I stopped out there again and they're REALLY REALLY cleaning it up. So many of the buildings in my post from two years ago were gone. It looks so different. I'd be curious to see it now.

Zoé March 1, 2016 - 11:54 pm

You are honest, true to yourself and even if your interests might have evolved a bit, you're still sharing like before. The shell might have changed colour, but the core is still the same. And I don't need to like the same things as you (never visited abandoned buildings :-)), , to enjoy discovering your world and your interest. So thank you for your strength, your honesty and the work and commitment you put up in order to get your blog updated so often. I love discovering your world (and Klaus is a cutie). So bye bye haters, leave room for us those who like the Dainty Squid as it is 🙂 Love from Switzerland!

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 12:39 pm

The shell color changes fairly often… but I thought that was some of my appeal.

(my hair… get it? bad joked, but I had to!)

Anyway, thank you!! <3

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 12:39 pm

joke*

Cloud_Connected March 2, 2016 - 1:16 am

I have read your blog for as long as I can remember now, and I have to say that the evolution of Kaylah has been incredible to be a part of. I think I love your blog more now than ever. And the addition of Instagram makes the blog experience even better. And the fur babies!!! Who wouldn't love them?!
I don't remember how I found you all those years ago, but I'm so glad I did. Thank you for sharing your wonderful life with all of us strangers 🙂

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 12:40 pm

Thank you so much. I don't even know how to respond to this. You da best! <3333

Sarah Pete March 2, 2016 - 2:11 am

Hell yeah! Good for you!! I love your blog so much, and I wouldn't want you to be anything but who you are! People are silly; for real, reading blogs is fun, why complain about what someone is posting. You don't owe us anything, and I appreciate what you write. 😉 Just keep being you, because you're awesome! And we all change, and that's okay; heck I'm still figuring out who I am, and constantly evolving. 😛

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 12:42 pm

If you aren't constantly evolving then you're rotting… or something a little bit less dramatic than that. (My coffee still hasn't kicked in) But seriously how boring would it be if nothing ever changed?!

<333

Eilinor Rigby March 2, 2016 - 2:19 am

People are strange.
That's a thing that I keep repeating to myself every time something like that append. How can they criticize a personal taste like that?
Everyone is different, everyone is strange.
And it is OK. I mean, I'm strange, and proud. I'm different, I love being different, and when people are happy with what they are. I can't understand why people would criticize someone for that -_-
That's why I love your blog: you are you, without conformism, you don't just like one thing, you like everything in your world, and the best part is that you share it with us!
I'm happy to follow you, to find photos of abandoned buildings, clothes, food, Klaus… is what make you and your blog different, what make you special.
Just keep being unique dear, your reader are here for that 😉

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 12:43 pm

Thank you so much! <33

Katie March 2, 2016 - 4:23 am

The fact that you are non-niche is amazing, that's what really keeps me going back to blogs. They seem much more dimensional. (There's only so many clean, white photos with a hat hanging from the wall, or bread on marble countertops I can take before I get terribly bored of a blog. Eep! Sorry minimalistic bloggers!) Thank you for this post, I have a two month old son and I'm always nervous I'm turning into a baby blog and I hold back. This is a great reminder that your blog is your personal place to post what you want to. ( And what kind of person doesn't love photos of dogs?!) 😉 xx

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 12:50 pm

You can blog about babies and not be "a baby blog"! If someone doesn't like you because you post too many (incredible) photos of your boy, then do you really want them following you anyway? To repeat what so many of these comments said, you do you girl! I want to shout that to every single person with a blog out there

Oh my god, your main blog photo in the sidebar? TOO CUTE. And your photography? SO gorgeous! <333

Stephanie March 2, 2016 - 4:35 am

90 THOUGHTS? OMG I can't believe you're replied to them all. I just wanted to say that I have been reading your blog since 09 maybe? Gosh it's been a LONG time. And I love every minute of it. Because we too as readers, have also grown. I started following along in my early twenties and as I approach the ever-so-dreadul 30 I can see too that my priorities and hobbies have changed as a person. Along with what I enjoy photographing!

I can't tell you how often I see an abandoned building post on Reddit and think to myself "OH KAYLAH WOULD LOVE THIS I SHOULD TWEET IT TO HER!" I don't know because I'm way too shy and figure you've already seen it. But it's something that I love about you. I love your style, your passions and your hobbies. Keep being you. You might lose some people, but you'll continue to build an audience and empire that love who you are.

<3 <3

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 12:52 pm

Isn't it crazy that we're all just kind of growing up together!? That's really strange thought that occurs to me when people tell me they've been reading for x amount of years.

Also, YES, tweet me abandoned building stuff. I don't use Reddit so basically anything you could link me to there I've probably never seen it, and even if I have I still appreciate the thought!

<3

Mindi Wooley March 2, 2016 - 4:41 am

Oh man, internet people can be such jerks! I cant believe someone dissed Klaus like that. Like you said, its the same as telling someone you dont like their kid. People are so weird. Ughhh.

Ive been a reading your blog for years, and its been so fun watching you grow as a person and change over the years. Ive always loved how colorful you are, and its exciting to get a peek into your life and adventures. It sucks that there are always those haters out there just ready to jump on an opportunity to bring someone down.

Cheers to you for sharing this post. Keep your head up and keep posting anything and everything YOU love! We love you for it 🙂

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 12:54 pm

Thank you so much for always being rad, Mindi! <3333

bohémienne-to-be March 2, 2016 - 5:22 am

Your authenticity is what makes your blog great. So yes, just keep posting about whatever you love, whatever that may be, now and in the future.

Because your blog is so diverse, I think you will keep reaching out to many different readers.

Personally, I'm never really interested in bath products, but hey, I can just skip those posts and read the rest.
I love the abandoned buildings, like really, so awesome!
And I even like the pictures of Claus, which is saying a lot, because I don't really like dogs that much.

Again, your authenticity and diversity is what makes your blog great.

Keep up the good work, all of it!

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 12:57 pm

Hehe, glad to know that Klaus even appeals to non dog lovers! 😛

Thank you! <3

Natalie Mulford March 2, 2016 - 7:56 am

Everybody grows and changes and everybody has different tastes. I admit, I don't find the fascination in abandoned buildings like you, but I adore your writing and photography, so I will still often click through to read the posts. Also, thats not ALL you post about, I find you still share a great range of different topics, and thats what is great! And never ever stop posting about Klaus! He's so cute!

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 12:58 pm

Thanks, Natalie! 🙂

Anna March 2, 2016 - 10:49 am

Whaaat!? People are crazy, Klaus is the cutest!
I love your abandoned places posts…in fact, it's how I found your blog and I even wrote one of my own when I came across an incredible abandoned railway building near my new home in the woods while walking the dogs (if you want to see, it's beautiful and you totally get a name-check 🙂 : http://www.annainternationalblog.com/2015/03/04/abandoned-places/). Please keep posting them, and in fact, whatever you want. That's what makes this a blog I want to read! 🙂 x

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 1:02 pm

Thanks so much, Anna! So happy to hear you like them! 🙂

Bethany Susan March 2, 2016 - 11:19 am

You do you. You is what we come here to read about! I've loved "sharing" your evolution over the years through your blog. 🙂

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 1:04 pm

<333

PeachSponge March 2, 2016 - 11:26 am

Well said! And I think you should post MORE photos of Klaus! He's so precious

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 1:05 pm

Hah! I'll get on that! 😉

daire. March 2, 2016 - 12:16 pm

To be honest I like the cemetery and abandoned place and animal posts more than outfit posts. Not because they are not interesting or beautiful but I don't live in the US and they are not really relevant for me (sometimes prices including the shipping and taxes do not worth ordering).
(Do not mention Target. I would cry when I see all that nice stuff you bought there…)
But I would never say that do not to post about clothes or items not available in Europe. They are important to you and the wide range of stuffs you like makes you so uniqe. <3

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 1:06 pm

<3333

(Sorry you don't have Target!)

Heidi Dewhirst March 2, 2016 - 12:25 pm

I love the charm of abandoned buildings- do carry on! 🙂 Also, if somebody doesn't like something, they should simply stop reading- where's the use in criticizing? 🙂 xx

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 10:05 pm

My thoughts exactly! 🙂

Anna Costa March 2, 2016 - 1:45 pm

Oh, this is so good to read. I LOVE this post. I also love how you stated that you will not change for the sake of pleasing anyone. You da best. I always considered you one of the most fun bloggers around, and your posts, even the ones I don't particularly connect with (like nails or seewing) I enjoy because you write very well, you photograph very well and do it with passion. I have to tell you that your posts since you got your drivings licence and bough your car made me want to face my fears more. So with the abandoned buildings ones. Keep up the good work, the right people will stay.

Thank you so much, Anna! 🙂

Lesley Spencer March 2, 2016 - 2:09 pm

I love your blog. I cannot understand why someone would a) read a blog they didn't enjoy then b) make an effort to write something nasty/bad! What! Blogs are unique and I love yours more than many others precisely because its eclectic and sometimes challenging. You grow/I grow. Thank you!

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 10:07 pm

Thanks so much, Lesley! 🙂

tonia March 2, 2016 - 2:31 pm

You are awesome! Post what you like. It's good to see so much randomness (that's a compliment) in one person. I hope to be more random one day

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 10:07 pm

Hehe, thanks so much Tonia! 🙂

Laura Jones March 2, 2016 - 2:37 pm

you should definitely always post about things you want to post about and things that interest you yourself! i love your posts about abandoned buildings and cemeteries, and i love that you blog about so many different and diverse things! and even if it wasn't something i myself am into, i'd still find it interesting to read and see what things you like and what new things you're into at the moment:-) that's why blogging is so great, haha! xxx

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 10:10 pm

Thanks so much, Laura! 🙂

Amyleigh Craig March 2, 2016 - 4:42 pm

The reason you've been my favourite blog to visit time and time again for years is that you're so unique compared to the other blogs out there. Yeah, I love to read the beauty blogs, but I love reading about the cemeteries and abandoned buildings you've visited way more! Your photography is fantastic and inspirational and as a reader, you definitely come across as super interested in the content you post and that is so important and so nice to see! Keep it up because I LOVE reading what you post!

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 10:11 pm

Aw, thank you so much Amyleigh! <3

Lynn March 2, 2016 - 4:53 pm

I like it all! It's your blog, post what you like. Some people are just never happy and like to complain about evertything!

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 10:11 pm

Thanks, Lynn! 🙂

Lela Bungard March 2, 2016 - 5:35 pm

I've been vicariously living through your blog posts for as long as I've been a reader. I love that you're semi-close so some of these adventures you go on are totally within the realm of possibility for me to check out. Hello deer park! You keep being you. You're my favorite stranger on the internet and I love the direction your blog is going.

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 10:12 pm

Hehe, thank you so much! <333

SO, have you been to the deer park yet? Isn't it THE best?!!!!

Lora Jury March 2, 2016 - 6:59 pm

Kaylah! Your blog is hands down my favorite. I love that you show nature, adventure, "analog hobbies" like writing hand written postcards + film camera photography, animals, succulents, hair fun, nail fun, animals, succulents and succulents. I'm serious – you have me propagating plants. You have me craving sweet accessories and office supplies. I also collect obscure oddities (teeth!) and love cemetaries! I feel that I like rare things and it is special to me that you like these rare things as well! I appreciate you and thank you for evolving in what your likes/posts are. You're being real! Some ladies like cleaning bones and geeking out over fancy pencils. I am your demographic – keep up the great work!

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 10:15 pm

YES, I'm so happy to hear that! <333333

Rae - Say It Aint So March 2, 2016 - 7:06 pm

my favorite blogs are personal blogs where people really let their personality shine through and tell me about what they are doing and what they like. i read through bloglovin' so when their is occasionally a topic i'm not interested in, i just mark as read. I don't know why people have to be so rude on the internet! haha! I don't dye my hair so I don't read those posts, but I'm not like, offended that you put it on your blog!
I've been reading dainty squid for a long time (I think i started about the time your craft basement got flooded) and I've for sure changed since then. it would be weird if you didn't. keep it up girl! so many of us love to come here and see your adventures! And never stop posting Klaus because he is a precious baby!

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 10:18 pm

Damn girl, that is a long time! So happy you stuck around all these years (and I'm happy to be your penpal now!)
🙂

Danielle Morgan March 2, 2016 - 7:51 pm

Everyone has done such a wonderful job at explaining their thoughts and feelings about this – not sure if I have anything relevant to add. So, I will give you a big internet high five because despite all this criticism, you are still blogging on! 🙂

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 10:19 pm

Thanks so much Danielle! <333

sarah juracan March 2, 2016 - 8:50 pm

I am from central america and I have been a follower for a couple of years and I love your blog no matter what topic you post about 🙂

Kaylah March 2, 2016 - 10:20 pm

Thanks, Sarah! 🙂

Magdalena Kucharska March 2, 2016 - 10:24 pm

I can't believe. How could someone tell you not to post photos of Klaus? This is an absurd!!! Give him a big hug from me and tell him that he's the cutest puppy ever! And about abandoned places- I like this kind of posts. I have my own blog and share photos of abandoned places mixed with cosmetics, computer games, photos of birds and nature, anything I like. My blog is little messy but I always think about it like "this is me, even if it's weird. Well, maybe I'm weird? And maybe someone as weird as me likes my posts".

Hehe, Klaus sends his love right back in the form of one thousand licks! 😛

Just wanted to make sure I threw my support in here with the others! If I'm not feeling the abandoned place I just keep scrolling! If I'm not feeling this, that, or the other thing, I keep scrolling. I don't expect to like every single thing about another person's interests, whether in person or online. But obviously I feel that we have enough in common that I keep on reading (and very occasionally commenting)! I guess not everyone is like me but if I get to a place where I don't like a blog anymore – I just use that handy little unfollow button!
Keep on keeping on!

Thanks for being so rad! 🙂

I love your abandoned building and cemetery posts mostly because it is something i am interested in, but always a little nervous to do myself. As you have mentioned in a few of your posts, many abandoned buildings are private property and I am a little scardy cat, plus my husband always discourages me for doing things like that lol. So you can be my eyes for some of those cool places!

Kaylah March 4, 2016 - 2:08 pm

Haha! Happy to do the dirty work for ya! 😛

Shannon Phillips March 3, 2016 - 10:01 pm

I mostly read crafting blogs…but your posts are always a breath of fresh air to me. Exploring abandoned buildings may not be my thing, but I love reading your posts nonetheless. It is such an awesome world we live in and getting to read about someone who lives a different life than my own is one of the reasons I love to read blogs. Anyways, Kaylah your'e awesome, I love to read your blog and have read it for a few years…and will continue to do so as it changes!

Kaylah March 4, 2016 - 2:09 pm

Thank you so much, Shannon! <333

Those other people are just twats!!! Ha, but seriously.. Usually people project things onto others (even inadvertently) so it sounds like perhaps they are just jealous of your kickass adventures? I know that I, for one, am quite envious of your abandoned building posts because I'm too much of a chicken to go by myself and I don't know anyone else that would go with me. 🙁 So I love reading your posts to live vicariously through you! I guess instead of doing that, they choose to lash out instead. I bet if they had to put their name on their comments, they wouldn't have said anything…

Anyways, you're really freaking awesome Kaylah. Don't let them get you down. <3

Oh totally, being anonymous makes everyone "brave".

Thanks for being so rad! <3

I follow your blog loooooong time ago, flickr times so I have been following all those changes in your life. To be honest it was difficult for me the process when you moved to the city. Like any change is hard in the beggining. But we have só much in common that I started being really into your urban posts. I also love to explore and abandoned buildings is on the list. I'm just like you: love nature and love the city. Both have bunch of cool stuff to offer 🙂

Haters gonna hate and the biggest a blog turns, the more hate comments bloggers receive. Mostly of these comments are because of jealousy so dont take those words too seriously, alright? And keep up the awesome work, you are one of the bloggers I follow for longer. You have a great balance between how to posts, personal posts and lifestyle. Forget that niche thing, is not for anyone. Always blog about what makes you happy.

Kaylah March 4, 2016 - 2:12 pm

Thanks Marta! 🙂

Just got around to reading this post and wow I seriously don't understand some people. They seems to go out of their way to make someone feel bad but I'm glad you didn't let it get to you. You HAVE changed and your blog changed with you. You should always post about things you love and are passionate about. Personally that's what I like to see in a blog. If the blogger is passionate then so am I as a reader 🙂

Kaylah March 4, 2016 - 2:14 pm

Thank you so much for always being so kind, Elif! <333

I loved that you wrote this. I've been following you blog for a few years now, initially attracted by all the nature photography (and mycology!!) and cemeteries. It's been nice to see how you have grown as a person and your blog is a reflection of that.
Another thing that attracted me to the dainty squid was our shared interests. Mycology, cemeteries, skulls/bone collecting, medical models, film photography, weird stuff in general jaja. Just keep doing you! Here you have one reader that loves it x

Kaylah March 4, 2016 - 2:16 pm

Thank you so much Rose. 🙂

I've been following your blog for quite a long time, and yes, it has changed… but in a way that I have enjoyed. I love crafty blogs, it's how I first found you, and why I started following you… but over the years, the changes to your blog have been gradual… it's been an evolution that has a natural flow to it.

I have followed other craft blogs that very jarringly went from posting about crafts to being almost 100% pictures of the blogger. There was no evolution, just one day, a whole, huge following of craft blog followers got hijacked and thrown into a fashion blog instead. I stopped following that blog. As a reader, that wasn't something I appreciated. I didn't complain about it or leave nasty remarks… I just stopped following.

It always amuses me, the people who "hate everything" you're doing… yet… still follow you… are there sticking around just to complain?! The internet is crazy sometimes.

I've always seen your blog as a lifestyle blog, not solely a crafting blog (at least since I've been following). It's always been more of a visual diary, and it has evolved and changed right along with you in a very natural way.

Also, I'm perfectly happy to look at as many abandon building and cemetery and pup pictures as you care to post 🙂

I only started following your blog a year ago, and I was pretty excited to find a kindred soul who liked the same weird stuff (bones, abandoned buildings, animals, photography, and exploring) as I do. I love your posts! They are artistic, informative, and so real. People evolve, and even if some people don't like it, there are always new people discovering you that you inspire 🙂 And who couldn't like your puppy?! He's adorable! People who love their pets (and animals in general) are the best kind of people in my experience. 😀

I just found your blog today, and I'm personally totally tickled by both cemeteries and abandoned buildings. And your awesome hair colors. So while some people may be resistant to change, know that you've got some new people hopping aboard 🙂

I for one LOVE your photo posts with buildings and cemeteries and Klaus! Whoever doesn't like it well I only have one thing to say: "BYE FELICIA!" xoxo ^_^

Honestly, your blog is one one my favorite spaces on the whole internet so please keep doing what you're doing! I love that you post about all your weird and wonderful hobbies. It feels genuine and I LOVE that it's different. When I get sad that the blog world is becoming commercialised (not that there's anything wrong with monetising of course – I just hate when it feels like they're only posting product reviews) and homogenous and boring I remember that the Dainty Squid exists and it makes me happy. I've always found your photography and writing incredibly inspiring whether it's crafts or cemeteries or abandoned buildings and it's lovely to watch you grow and change and document that online.

Obviously keep sharing lots of photos of your dog – who objects to cute animal pictures?!?!
