Erie Soap Co. Review

Tuesday, February 16, 2016

It's a fact, I love showering and of course, I love all bath related goods. When Jackie from Erie Soap Company reached out to me to possibly write a review I just about squealed. Beautiful handmade soap that just happens to be locally made? INTO IT.

Erie Soap Company is run by Jackie, mother of three, from Westlake, OH who one day decided she needed to learn something new. I know that feeling! From the very first batch, made in her kitchen, she was hooked. "I'm talking watch every YouTube video, check out every book from the library, DREAM about soap, hooked. Simply put, I found my passion. I adore it." Within a few months of that first batch she had made several hundred bars and knew she wanted this to be more than a hobby. Erie Soap Company was born in September of 2014.

I asked Jackie a few questions about her business, and what makes her soap special. My plan was so chop it up and write everything in my own words but reading over her email I can't. She's clearly very passionate about what she does, and there's no way I could say it better. Anything in quotations marks in this post is straight from Jackie.

Jackie on what's in her soaps - "When I starting learning about what soap should be, I was appalled at the ingredients in store bought soap. From the beginning, I was intent on quality. I use olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil. NEVER palm oil (just not a fan of the toll it takes on the environment). I use cocoa butter, shea butter, and mango butter. Sometimes avocado oil and aloe vera oil. Many of my soaps have clays and/or natural exfoliants. Adding these in the right combinations just makes great soap.  I never really knew what I was missing before."

First of all, the package she sent me smelled amazing. Even before opening it I knew I was in for a treat. I obviously haven't had a chance to use everything I received, that's a lot of soap! I chose my favorite to use in the shower. It was a tough call since everything she sent me smelled heavenly. The winner, just by a smidge, was Mint Ylang Ylang. It lathers beautifully, leaves me feeling soft, and smelling great. Most importantly, especially this time of the year, it doesn't dry out my skin. I feel good using something that only includes ingredients I can pronounce, and that I either already knew what they were or were easily looked up. I kind of feel like a big dummy for using store bought soaps all these years.

I think I've expressed pretty clearly here on the blog in the past that I love bubble baths. So when Jackie reached out to me about a review I was secretly answering the email with fingers crossed that I'd get to give some of her bath bombs a spin. Not only did I get two bath bombs, I also received one of her bubble bars.

The bubble bar was AMAZING, as you can see from my not so impressive iPhone shot above. Tons and tons bubbles that continued to appear after the bar was gone. After getting out of the tub I was so silky smooth. And the bath bomb?! So great! My first reaction was that it was a lot smaller than the bath bombs I'm used to but these babies did not disappoint. I used the juicy apricot one a few nights back, while eating cake in the tub, and I was shocked at how long it lasted. They're small but they're mighty! Plus, not to sound like a broken record, it smelled amazing! Can you imagine how good her workshop must smell!?

"I found right away that I loved creating beauty in something useful.  To me, soap is beautiful.  A simple bar from my Natural Line or intricate swirls in many colors.  There are endless combinations of colors, scents, and additives. I don't think I'll ever get bored!"

So, my final thoughts? I haven't said a single thing negative so you're darn right I give Erie Soap Co. two thumbs way way way up. I loved the soaps as soon as I got them out of the package. They're beautiful, they smell good, and I feel super clean after using them. What really sells me though? Jackie! I love nothing more than a passionate person. It's clear from our emails that she adores what she does. I hope that I was able to share enough with you guys that you picked up on it too.

Jackie has been kind enough to offer 15% off to TDS readers. So use coupon code "SAVE15" and treat yourself to something nice from Erie Soap Co. A bath bomb! Seriously!!! Or maybe her grab bag because I don't know how else you'd choose which soap sounded best.

  1. These soaps look divine ! I need to try them. I use organic soaps from Lush or sometimes I pick some up from Urban Outfitters. Thanks :)

    1. Of all the Lush products I've used I don't think I've ever used one of their solid soaps! That's kind of strange and it just occurred to me.

    2. Lush soaps have just as many sulfates and surfactants as soaps from the drug store. Honestly, they have some good products, but soap is not necessarily one of them.

This is why I always try to buy artisan cold process soap, and now make my own!

  2. Her soaps are so beautiful (never thought I would write that sentence, haha)! I love how passionate she is about what she does.

    1. Dude, right? It's such a funny sentence but seriously, that is some gorgeous soap!

  3. I love the idea of all natural products! I've been trying to finish all my current products, but once they're done, I'm definitely going to be purchasing a soap from this company!

    1. So glad to hear that! You'll LOVE this stuff! :)

  4. I'm surprised with her statement of 'Never using Palm oil'. Most soap supply companies (well, nearly all soap supply companies) sell sustainably and ethically sourced palm oil, either regular or organic.

I know some soapers don't use palm, and others use sustainable palm and forgo other non-vegan additives like lard or tallow, and beeswax.

I just wanted to put it out there that sustainable and ethical palm oil exists, and is actually pretty easy to find, so don't be afraid of it when it appears on your artisan soap label! :)

  5. These look amazing. If there's one thing I appreciate it's hand made things by people who love the product. The soaps look heavenly. I want a bath right now!

  6. These soaps sound luxurious, and they're so pretty! I have been searching for all natural soaps and this sounds like just what I had in mind :)

  7. I like how soap is a small luxury that anyone can have. I love how passionate Jackie is about her business.
