hello, pink hair

by Kaylah Stroup
pink hair, the dainty squidpink hair, blue hair, beyond the zone, punky colours

When I make drastic hair color changes I like to share photos on the blog. See here, here + here. Sometimes it feels kind of funny, like right now, which is exactly why I’m over-explaining it. But I enjoy looking back at these posts for a multitude of reasons. One of which being I’m super forgetful. By the time I’ve applied dye to my hair I’ve usually already forgotten what I used. While what color your hair ends up really depends on what color it was previously, at least the way I change colors, it’s nice to have a point of reference for the next time I inevitably make my way back to this color.

I had let the orange grow out more than I normally do. It was probably the longest I had ever let my roots grow. See?! I just didn’t want to give up the orange but I knew if I redyed it I would regret it. When I finally bleached my roots the pieces of hair that bleach ended up on ended up being an even brighter orange then they were, which is sooo typical when you’re ready to switch colors. All that to say my hair was still VERY orange when I applied dye to it.

I decided to try and use only the dye I had in my cupboard. I have a pretty awesome supply of dye on hand. I have basically every color but of course, I didn’t have what I really wanted – any shade of pink. I mixed a boatload of conditioner with Punky Colour Purple for my top layers and used Punky Colour Atlantic Blue for the bottom. It ended up a little bit less perfect than I was hoping. It wasn’t awful but there was too much orange for my tastes. I definitely diluted it too much. You live and you learn, I guess. After all these years each time I dye my hair it’s still kind of like an experiment. You can see it in this post.

These photos are from after I touched up that dye job. I’m so much happier with this than what I ended up the first time around. I haven’t had pink hair in over seven years. It’s kind of a fun change. It sounds funny for someone who has had orange hair for the past few months to say but I haven’t been all that adventurous with my hair this last year or so. I’ve been sticking around colors that I do often and haven’t been branching out into new combinations. This is definitely a new one for me.

This is Beyond The Zone Bubble Head Pink, some more Punky Colour Purple, and I hate to admit it… Ion Color Brilliance in Radiant Orchid on the top layer. I also touched up the Punky Colour Atlantic Blue. I hadn’t used ION Color Brilliance since around the time they came out. I hated them then. They have a lot of nice looking colors though, and the price certainly makes them tempting. I thought maybe in the last four years they’d have improved their product. Nope. The second I started applying it I regretted not being more patient and waiting a day or two to grab some Punky Colours instead. Hilariously enough the color barely even showed up once rinsed out but it sure did make a mess of my shower… and towels …and everything else for like a week. I legitimately don’t even know where it was coming from.

Because the main color used is already fading (Beyond the Zone dyes are an okay stand in but kind of an awful idea for using on the majority of your hair) I’m looking forward to touching it up in a few weeks with a slightly different color combo. Maybe I’ll keep the pink or I might go purple instead. Who knows!  For now I’m liking this.
xoxo

Thanks, Stephanie! 🙂

You should absolutely try Arctic Fox Hair Color! It's vegan and cruelty free, it's conditioning, and gets rave reviews! I think they currently have 12-14 colors…

I've been thinking about it. I keep stumbling upon their photos on instagram!

I love the colors! All the colors that you've dyed your hair look so natural on you! It doesn't look like a jarring change to me, but like a seamlessly "effortless" transition. (Effortless in quotes because it sounds like dying your hair is an intense process lol)

Kaylah January 12, 2016 - 2:52 pm

Haha! Thank you!! 🙂

It's so bright! I love it!

Kaylah January 12, 2016 - 2:54 pm

I love when my hair is super bright!!!

Funny enough, thats when I never get compliments in public. People start complimenting it when it's faded which boggles my mind (but that's also a good thing because I start to feel self conscious when it's faded.) 😛

The same thing happens to me! I'm like are you people crazy! This isn't even an even color. 👻

Have you looked into using Overtone conditioners? They keep your color fresh! I use mine to make my hair pastel pink, I love it! they come in varying intensities though, so you'd be able to use the extremely concentrated formula.

Love the new color and oh Klaus looks so snuggly and sweet!!

Kaylah January 13, 2016 - 2:26 pm

Oh, he IS. He's a cuddle monster. You can't sit down anywhere without him trying to come over and try to sit on your lap.

It really suits you – I am an admirer of coloured hair but I don't think I could ever pull it off! Not this bright anyway! I think someone else commented on how natural it looks on you and it does – UNFAIR!! 😛 – Sam

Girl, I feel ya…I used Ion Color Brilliance a couple weeks ago and it was definitely a disappointment. The new 'do looks cute though!

Kaylah January 13, 2016 - 2:27 pm

Glad to hear it's not just me. I can't believe what a crappy product it is and that it's still on the shelves!

LOVE THIS COLOR!! I wish I was brave enough for this look! I love following GuyTang & the likes on Instagram. I can only dream about having vibrant colors like this lol!

Kaylah January 13, 2016 - 2:29 pm

You should do it! Or at least a little bit of color! It's just hair, if you hate it you can always change it! I'm rooting for ya! 🙂

Say, how often do you have to get your hair cut? And do you cut your bangs yourself between salon cuts? Is the subtle sideways move of the bangs due to the cut or do you style it that way? I have blunt bangs as well, although I like to keep them short (length like yours are), my bangs are now the longest they've been for a long time…I thought about growing them out, mreh. What I want to say is, I really like your haircut :3
I like this shade of pink as well, maybe because it's not such a "pure" pink…

Kaylah January 13, 2016 - 2:32 pm

I get my hair cut whenever I feel like a change, I cut my bangs whenever they get "too long", and the subtle sideways move is because I use a curling iron on them. (If I don't they're pin straight, and awful)

Haha, thanks!

ma January 14, 2016 - 3:21 pm

Thank you! I went to get my bangs cut properly again yesterday (short <3) and I might try the curling iron way.
(Sorry, I probably submitted this comment about a dozen times because my browsers and logins went crazy on me… arrrh.)

Hi kaylah, this might sound lik a stupid question but when you dye your hair, does your scalp get stained too? because mine does and it looks kinda horrendous! how do you get rid of it/avoid it while still keeping the dye on your locks?

Kaylah January 13, 2016 - 2:33 pm

Yeah, but it washes off in a day or so. No big deal! 🙂

Mariko January 13, 2016 - 5:59 pm

Gorgeous! I adore the dimension to this color.

Kaylah January 14, 2016 - 12:39 pm

Thank you, Mariko! 🙂

Elif January 13, 2016 - 10:03 pm

I think every color that you have dyed your hair has looked incredible on you. I was blown away when you said goodbye to green and dyed your hair dark red about two years ago. I guess at that point I just knew you could pull off any color! So I definitely feel the same way now with pink hair 🙂

Kaylah January 14, 2016 - 12:40 pm

Hehe, thank you so much Elif. You're always so kind. <3

Damaris // The cat, you and us January 15, 2016 - 11:29 am

Looking amazing with this pink color Kaylah! I love specially that you give it so much life by layering it with the purple and blue underneath, it makes a great difference. What I like about sharing on the blog is that I often in a conversation with Daniel we are like: when did that happen? and we can go to the blog and search it. Hahaha, forgetful heads I guess!

Kaylah January 15, 2016 - 1:46 pm

Hahah! That's cute! 😀

bec p January 16, 2016 - 5:07 am

Ha, ha, I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago! I hated Ion's Salmon, which is supposed to be a peachy pink, but is really just hot pink that didn't mix with anything properly and barely tinted my hair a few years ago. This time, I had waited too long with my roots and couldn't stand it, but didn't want to walk around with white roots and some faded patches in my hair while my usual brand (Punky Colors or Special Effects) came through the mail, so I went down to the local place and picked up Ion Shark Blue. It was a soft periwinkle on my roots, QUICKLY fading to dingy grey, and it didn't cover my fading teal at all, though the last couple of tablespoons of Special Effects Deep Purple mixed with tons of conditioner turned my under layers into a deep cobalt – very pretty. Now I've got to do something again. I wouldn't mind a soft periwinkle all over, but I've got to cover with something fairly bright at this point. Oh well! Live and learn (again).
