call for postcard pals! - The Dainty Squid

call for postcard pals!

Monday, January 11, 2016

One of my 2016 goals is to send 150 pieces of mail, and I want to absolutely kill this goal by greatly surpassing it. I need your help to do so though! I mean, I can only send my boyfriend so many cards before things start to get creepy. I know there are more than a few of y'all out there that are snail mail fanatics, and even more of ya that want to send more mail but need a little motivation.

In 2014 I made a mail related goal as well (which I totally accomplished!) I had a form up for people to fill out their address. Within no time there was an overwhelming number of responses. I worked my way through most of the list by the end of the year but sadly many of the people never responded. This year to avoid that I'm just asking that anyone who wants to exchange mail writes me first. I really want this to be successful! I'm not only looking to send out lots of mail but hopefully make a few friends in the process.

"Email is good..." sticker by Sarah who is basically the boss of snail mail. Her instagram account, stampitsendit, is kind of the coolest!

I'm looking for folks who want to send postcards just to say "Hello!", or share a bag of their favorite tea! People who will mail me photos of their pets, and be totally stoked to get the same in return. People who like weird postcards, and mail celebrating random holidays that no one actually celebrates! Anyone who likes to send and receive mail, I'm looking at you!

I need to be upfront about a few things. One - I stink at responding to letters...big time. I'd rather write up eighty postcards in a row than respond to one letter. As I'm sure you've noticed, I'm not huge on writing a lot on the blog, and that carries over to snail mail. Please keep it relatively short and sweet. Two - I will definitely be a lot slower at responding to anything outside the US. I don't keep international stamps on hand (those darn things are expensive!) but I will get back to you, just not super quickly.

Still wanna be my postcard pal? Awesome! You can write to me at:
Kaylah Doolan
PO Box 770707
Lakewood, OH 44107
USA

I'm looking forward to making new pals, sending out postcards, and crossing off my goal!
xoxo

One more thing - please, please, please make sure to write your return address very neatly, especially if you're outside of the US.  I can't respond if I can't read your address.

  3. I think I'm going to send you something! ;) I love the idea of snail mail, but I totally feel you about sending letters - I'm just not good at words and it's a struggle for me to write more, especially to people I don't know very well... That's why I love postcards so much, they seem to be less official and you can always write something about the picture, like some interesting story etc. Are you familiar with that website Postcrossing? It's so great, you can exchange postcards with people from all over the world!

    1. Exactly! It's hard for me to even think what to write even if I know the person really well. So much easier to just be able to write something short and sweet.

Yes, I was a member for a while. Never really a fan.

  5. You know what's funny; literally a day ago I wrote your address down because I decided to send you snail mail! So, basically, expect something in the post from the UK ;) Love this idea. 2016 is the year of snail mail in my life - I have a writing set and a cool wax stamp thing that I use when I send stuff because why the hell not?! - Sam

  6. I love this! I'll try to send you something, probably my favorite tea. I'm terrible at following up though, but hopefully I send something out! I'm with you on short letters. It's even hard for me to think of something when I'm filling out a card for a best friend!

  10. This sounds fun! I love writing and sending snail mail. A while back I was pen pals with a bunch of girls I met on Tumblr and we would send each other cute friendship bracelets we made or little photos. You can count on getting something from me!

  24. Sweet, I've been trying to be better at sending snaily-mails to my friends and made a goal to send mail once a month to everyone on my list that says something about me. Last month I did #vegan :) I have written down your address and will be in the February bundle. I'm a artist, so its less words and more visuals :p haha, hope you enjoy :)

  26. I just LOVE seeing pictures of other people's stationary collections.

Also, yay! I was inspired to make a similar goal, and even though we're only eleven days into the year I am so happy I did! Writing postcards and collecting cute little things to stuff in envelopes is fun! I sent out so many letters and I actually received my first one back today! I got all the warm fuzzies when I opened up my po box.

  35. I noticed your Black Apple postcard right away! She sold some of her artwork at one of my craft fairs in 2015 (although she wasn't there in person) and I bought some framed paintings which are on my wall, and which I love. I have hundreds of postcards looking for a new home (the box I keep them in wont close) and I'm not really great at sending mail but like you, I'm trying this year. As a long time reader of your blog (who's never commented, I don't think!) maybe I'll send a postcard your way, all the way from London UK! Christina xxx

  36. Do you already have a pen pal from Belgium? If not, I'll probably be your first :-) Awesome idea!

  37. Woah.. I was one of your 2014 postcard pals and just recently I found a postcard that totally made me think of you; it is sitting here on my desk ready to be mailed... and here you are shouting out for them..

  38. I just packed all my snail-mail things for my upcoming move, but i'll send you something from The Netherlands from my new home! (My snail-mail goal for 2016 is to send 50 pieces of mail)

  39. Your post on ig brought me here. I want to send/receive postcards, too! In the past I've asked who wanted to receive postcards, sent out 20 and got only 1 reply. Huhuhu. ๐Ÿ˜‚
I'm confused on the part on your post about sending outside US and not having international stamps. I believe you can use the same stamps for both local and international addresses. :)
Sending a card your way soon! ๐Ÿ˜

    1. Nope! To send something outside of the US it's a different stamp that costs over twice the price as a regular stamp.

  40. heck yes! i love sending postcards. whenever i got on a trip i send one (sometimes more) to my best friend every day. i have never had anyone else interested in sending them back. i just went through my stash of weird postcards and realized about 90% of them seem right up your alley. haha! Such an awesome idea to connect to people all over the world and especially awesome for those of us that do better with the written word than the audible voice type talking words, i'm awful at getting tongue-tied when talking to people. Can't wait to send a postcard out! Question: how do you feel about Simpsons quotes? I figure they're short and sweet and uber hilarious.
