just flowers…

by Kaylah Stroup

Last week Jeff invited to come along with him while he worked on a photography project. We hiked to a waterfall, skateboarded a bit, and visited a community garden. It’s so late in the year that most everything was past it’s prime but there were still a handful of flowers, looking beautiful as ever. I took the opportunity to take lots of photos.

I kind of hate, okay – I really really hate, that flower photography is considered cheesy. Maybe I just think it’s cheesy? I feel like I’ve seen multiple places where people’s reactions to flower photos are how boring they are and that just kind of sticks in my head no matter how much I don’t want it to. With things I grow myself I at least feel like maybe a photo can be appreciated because of that, and people won’t feel so much like “it’s a flower, so what?” Actually, I’m not sure why I, or anyone at all, should ever feel the need to justify their photos. I know I shared some black and white photos I took a little while back that I had been holding on to because I didn’t feel like they fit the aesthetic my blog had but putting creative limits on something is always a really really bad idea. It felt really good to share those photos. So, on that note, here are some photos of flowers just because they’re pretty and I really enjoy them…

I have no idea where I’ll be living a year from now. That’s sounds very cryptic but it just means I’m open to whatever comes my way. I could be living in the same house, or I could be in another state. But I hope where ever I am I can have flowers. These ones have me aching for a massive garden of my own. I want my own personal field of wild flowers, a little bit of everything and lots of color.

These were all taken with my birthday lens, the 50mm f/1.2. I’m still madly in love with that lens. It weighs about ten tons but by golly, it is magic! I don’t know about you but when I save money for a while to buy something or put off buying something for a while when I finally get it it’s kind of just like “okay…cool… I have this thing now.” I was a bit worried that I would have hyped up this lens in my mind for so long that it wouldn’t live up to expectations. Yeah, definitely not the case. Basically every time I take a photo with it, which is more than once a day, I still get all giddy over it.

I especially love the colors of the first picture – I really like how the image is hazy. It reminds me of summer and has almost a fairytale-like quality to it! I started out taking macro pictures of flowers – I understand that people might think it's overdone, but I think flowers are great subject matter. I'm glad you decided to share these!

Love these pix, the cosmos are so cute, they remind me of my mother in laws garden. If you get the chance, you have to check out the arboretum in the twin cities area of MN. We went for a wedding last fall and it was insanity!!!! A cute little maze, tons of big trees, a waterfall and dahlias the size of my head!!!! The bride and groom got a season pass as a gift and have been about 5 times already!!

Love your photos! Flowers are by far my favourite things to photograph! The different angels, colours compositions! The possibilities are endless.

Thanks, Lauren! I feel like I've been passing up opportunities to shoot them because I wouldn't know what to do with the photos but now I just want to get out and shoot them all!!

i absolutely love the first photo. i would rep that on my desktop background if it was a big high res! i really love flower photos, too. it surprised me how much i love taking them! i went on a hike with three other friends once, and everyone else was being social and climbing things and taking pictures of the grand views, and i was just smug as a bug pointing my camera at all the flowers along the way. something about them. i'm really glad you shared these!

Thanks, Jaime! 😀

I think there's a difference between cheesy stock flower photos and how creative you can get. I love shooting plant life for fun because I'm terrible at landscape and flowers don't move on you. 😉 Plus you can play around and get such pretty bokeh. The 50 1.4 is my baby, the 1.2 sounds like so much fun, glad you love it!

Kaylah September 16, 2015 - 7:29 pm

That's very true, and I guess that could really go for any subject you shoot.

Oh my gosh, the 1.2 is just crazy awesome. I didn't think I could love a lens this much.

i totally get you on the flower thing. I love taking pictures of flowers, but am always relunctant to share them. And now I think we should both take on the attitude that says FLOWERS ARE COOL and really if someone is gonna hate on flower photos… like… why do you hate nature??? Ultimately we just need to embrace what we appreciate and be bold in sharing it.

Kaylah September 16, 2015 - 7:29 pm

Heck yes!

Post all the flowers! I love the first shot & the mushroom most. 🙂 For awhile I totally refused to shoot flowers because once I was talking to a photographer friend of mine about doing some prints and showing at markets together… and he was all like yeah I will go shoot -this awesome stuff- and you can go shoot -flowers because women are good at that-. I still get mad remembering! But then later I was just like whatever… I'll get some amazing shots of all the awesome stuff including flowers, and that'll show him!

Ughhh! WHAT?! That's infuriating!

Magdalena Kucharska September 16, 2015 - 10:07 pm

I feel the same. Always when I make flower pics. I want to share them but I keep thinking it's just the flowers and nobody cares about how beautiful they are to me…

Kaylah September 19, 2015 - 11:43 pm

Aw, I say we all post more flower photos!

Sarah September 16, 2015 - 11:25 pm

I'll never be bored of flower photography, especially when it's as beautiful as your shots! Love the little mushroom cameo too. 😀
