black + white - The Dainty Squid

black + white

Thursday, August 20, 2015

Lately I've been on a secret black and white kick. Not too secret since I mentioned it on instagram and in a project 365 post but secret where I'm not showing nearly even a small percentage of what I'm editing. I know that a lot of people are really into how colorful I am (I seriously get comments asking why I don't dress as colorfully as I used to...) and that's definitely held me back more than I care to admit. But you guys, I am looooving black and white photos so much right now. It just makes lines and shapes pop so much. Nearly everything I've shot recently I've at least previewed it in black and white because I'm just enjoying the look so much.

I just wanted to share a small sampling of some of my recent favorites, and to encourage you do or share something out of your creative comfort zone.
xoxo

  3. Black and White photography is so beautiful. I love that last photo so much! While on vacation this year I decided to edit some of my photos from a trip to the aquarium in black and white-and it definitely made them POP! Don't be afraid to share more of them! I can't speak for everyone obviously, but I personally love black and white photography and would love to see more!

  4. These black and white photos are looking so cool. I think they stand out so much since you usually work with such bright colors. I assume you edited these in Photoshop instead of camera settings? How much post-editing do you do on your photos for the blog? And do you do a lot of manual exposure or keep it on auto?

    1. I edit in Lightroom, I love it soooo much more than I ever liked Photoshop. I really don't do too much editing and I shoot in manual.

    2. Never used Lightroom, maybe it was added after I left college (and had easy access to expensive programs! XD) I'll keep that program in mind for the future though. I went to school for film so I got so use to only changing the aperture settings. It is definitely something I am getting use to.

  5. Love all of these, but the shot of the little Fox and the globe next to the bag are so pretty. Black and White photos always bring a lot of depth and detail to a picture and they looks so pretty. - Tasha

    1. Thanks Tasha. Foxes are cute no matter what but I love that black and white made the globe photo interesting. I wasn't crazy about it in color but in b+w it looks so interesting.

  6. It must be so weird to have people expect you to look/dress/create in a certain way (and call you out on it, haha)! I'm definitely diggin the black and white photos as much as your color ones.

    1. ...dude, right? I mean, I understand that you might grow accustomed to seeing things a certain way and miss them when they're gone but everything changes.

  7. Beautiful! I've always thought that everyone looks better in black and white photos (not that you don't always look great) and that's why I love photobooth photos so much. My NY state license photo is black and white and it looks so much better than a license photo ever should.

  10. That last photo is gnarly! I love black and white. Probably too much....I find this post kind of ironic because I've been trying to get into more color lately. We are opposites! Lovely photos.
