It's the little things...

Monday, May 18, 2015

The week before last I shared a bunch of photos of cute baby animals that I had taken. Those photos gave me the itch to shoot more things like that. Luckily the next weekend was Mother's Day so I'd be heading out to my parents which is where I always find neat things to shoot. During the course of the day I spotted a salamander, some young mourning doves, and two toads (plus a photobombin' ant!) that were all perfect models for me and my macro lens.

"Fashion Toad"

So, how precious is that salamander? It's a Northern slimy salamander, Plethodon glutinosus, and yes, he was very slimy. When I got to my parents my dad was removing the wood that didn't get burned over the winter from the porch. He called me over to see what I assumed would be a big spider (because if you've never had a massive woodpile right outside your door - they're spider city, man!)  but it was this little guy! My goodness, that little face is so adorable. There are some animals that I just can't wrap my head around the fact they're actually real because they're just so neat, and this is definitely one of them. I took so many photos of him but when it's something like that it just never feels like I took enough.

  4. I'm always so impressed by the results of your macro photography! I always have trouble with the focus - what settings do you usually shoot on?

    1. You might want to try shooting at a different aperture if you're having trouble with focusing macro shots.

Also- obviously, unless it's a macro lens you're not going to be able to get super close which would also result in out of focus photos.

  12. That toad shot five down from the top? AMAZING. I think if that toad knew what a great shot you'd got of him, he'd be pretty stoked.

Also, if you were contemplating new art prints to add to your Society6 store any time soon, I'd totally snag a toad print :)
