Nashville cemeteries // on film

Monday, March 31, 2014

While in Nashville a few weekends back, Mickey and I visited a handful of the cemeteries in the area. We stopped at Nashville National Cemetery, Mt. Olivet, as well as a few others. Nashville National Cemetery was the first national cemetery I've ever been to. National cemeteries are generally for military personnel, veterans, and their spouses. While they do make for pretty pictures, and are interesting to drive through, they're not necessarily that interesting to walk around since the headstones are all basically the same. Since the temperatures were quite chilly driving through each cemetery and stopping at interesting photo opportunities was the best option anyway. Below are some of my favorite pictures from all of the cemeteries we stopped at in Nashville.
Saving my favorite for last, look at this thing! This beauty is Major Eugene C. Lewis' mausoleum. I can't even get over how awesome it is.

All of the photos above were taken with a pentax k1000 and Fujifilm 35mm Superia X-TRA 400.

button up shirt - c/o HauteLook
jeans - Target

rings - fox c/o Rings&Tings, knuckle ring via Urban Outfitters

Well, hello there! It's been a while since you've seen me around, right? I kind of got out of the swing of outfit posts there for a while. Moving over an hour away from all my favorite spots to shoot doesn't make this any easier. I mean, I'm positive my new location is brimming with great new spots for outfit photos but I haven't had a second to get out and look. Soon!

As much as I wish I wasn't still wearing a sweater in March, I really do love this one. Elbow patches automatically make me love everything but on top of that this sweater is so cozy! I got it from HauteLook. HauteLook is a free, members-only website that hosts limited-time, limited-inventory sale events. They feature women's and men's apparel, accessories, and shoes, as well as kids' apparel and toys, beauty brands and home decor. Sign up here to find out about their latest sale events, there are new ones added daily at 8am Pacific time.  HauteLook has recently launched Nordstrom Rack for HauteLook that features ongoing sales so members can browse and shop great brands at a great value 24/7! Plus, members can return items in-store or online.

Below are some of my favorite items that are currently on HauteLook. I'm feeling those spring vibes right now, despite the fact we actually have an inch or so of snow outside currently. I'd do just about anything to be in that dress right now.

Hope you're having a lovely Thursday!

Yes, this is a sponsored post. But you best believe I really do love HauteLook. Thanks for helping support the companies that support The Dainty Squid!

coyote skull

Tuesday, March 25, 2014

After such a positive response when I shared the last skull I cleaned I thought I'd make it a regular feature here on the blog. I don't clean skulls super regularly, and especially now that I live in the city I doubt I'll be doing much until summer really comes and I'm at my parents a bit more so this will be a few and far between feature. It is a fun way to profile the things I've cleaned and an excuse to share photos!

So, my latest skull which has been clean for over a month is a coyote. The coyote's head was given to me by a neighbor at my previous residence. His friend had given him the coyote so he could tan the hide and the neighbor knew I cleaned skulls so he gave it to me.

It stayed in my freezer quite a while before I finally set to work on it. It's the second biggest skull that I've cleaned from start to finish (as in I had to fully skin it) Due to the fact it was still a bit frozen when I started working on it (and maybe also because I wasn't paying 100% attention), this is the first time cleaning a skull I've ever injured myself. Scalpel blade, meet finger. I had a pretty gnarly cut which I could have dealt with but my mom, the worry wart, kind of freaked me out. I had a moment where I was like "Yep, definitely gonna pass out!" I lost a lot of blood but it definitely could have been worse. It healed quickly and now I'm left with a nice little scar that still hurts from time to time if I hit it weird. Here's a picture of the cut after a few days. Fair warning, it's kind of gross hence why it's not just included in the post.

Anyway, it was a fairly quick clean and I'm very happy with the finished product. It's a beautiful skull, with all the teeth intact.
One of my favorite things about this skull is this pellet lodged in the mandible. I suppose I should clarify that I don't think it's cool that this guy got shot but I do think it's really amazing that the wound healed. The bone had already started to grow around the pellet and the skin was, obviously, completely healed.
Finally, a few comparison photos. Directly below is the coyote next to Z dog, the Great Dane.

apartment living // the living room

Monday, March 24, 2014

I realized last week that I've now been living in my new apartment for one month. It's been the best month. I absolutely love it here, I couldn't be happier. I feel like I'm exactly where I need to be right now. Initially a little nervous about city living, my fears have disappeared! This place is perfect for me.

Like I've mentioned in other posts, I'm mostly settled in. My bedroom still need a little work, really I'm just waiting to find a desk to make into a vanity and then it will quickly come together but in the mean time I've finished up my living room. It's basically the cutest thing ever, in my opinion.
Behind the couch, from where I would be standing to see the view in the above photo, is where I have my desk set up to work. It's the only wall with blank space left on it in this room, hence why it's not shown. As soon as I get it all set up I'll be sharing photos of my new office. To the left is my bathroom, a few closets and my bedroom. To the right is the dining room and kitchen.

I planned on doing a "sources" list but when it comes down to it, basically everything in the room is second hand, from a thrift store, ebay, a gift, etc. The couch is from Thrive Furniture. The fox and beetle pillow are from Target. If you're curious about anything else specifically, just ask!

I love this place dearly.
