Lush Review - The Dainty Squid

Lush Review

Monday, December 22, 2014

For a really long time, basically since I started, I've struggled with where my blog fits in. I think blogs that fit specifically in a niche, like beauty, travel, fashion, etc, are super neat. The Dainty Squid never fit neatly in a category though. I have huge range of interests and I want to share them all with you. I struggle with what to respond with when strangers ask what I blog about. I usually mutter "...uh, my life, I guess? Adventures, what I'm wearing, uhhh..." and by this time I've made them so uncomfortable they pretend they get it. Haha. You think by now I'd have an awesome answer for that but I don't. I have finally come to terms with the fact that this blog will never be a gadget blog, or a beauty blog or "insert specific niche here" blog though.

Despite coming to terms with that there are some subjects I kind of still feel weird blogging about. To most people their fascination with teeth is probably what they feel weird sharing but mine is beauty products. They've never really been mentioned on the blog. But to be honest, I LOVE beauty products. Make-up, hair products, bath produts - yes, please, I want them all. I'm not too savvy but I certainly enjoy trying new products.

Recently I was contacted by Lush to try out some of their products. Commence squealing. I LOVE LUSH. Lush products are my one thing I really like to splurge on, although I have a hard time buying anything outside of my favorite item - Sex Bomb. I'm not incredibly familiar with all their products so I jumped on the chance to try out some new things.
I got a Dashing Santa bath bomb, Santa Baby Lip Tint, Star Light Star Bright, and the Rosy Christmas Gift set which included Rose Jam Shower Gel and Ro's Argan Body Conditioner. Let me start by telling you that this package literally smelled better than anything ever. Even Klaus and the cats couldn't get enough. The three of them would not get away from the box.
The first thing I tested out was Santa Baby lip tint. It's very richly pigmented. This is it lightly applied with a brush and then topped with regular old lip balm to give it some shine. It smells really nice. I saw one of the reviews on Lush actually said it smelled like Pepsi. Of course I had to give it a good sniff after that... and oddly enough it does smell a bit like Pepsi, not enough so that it would be a turn off though. As you can see, even the puppy dog thought it smelled nice. Hehe! It is a bit messy. You probably wouldn't want to apply it with your fingers, and if you're not careful it does leave a bit of a red tint on things. I guess that's no big deal if you're a lipstick gal and are used to that but alas I am not. I prefer to not have to worry that when I inevitably touch my face or kiss my boyfriend it's going to be a mess. The good news is you can apply this vary sparingly, and still get a nice color from it that isn't messy which is perfect for non-lipstick loving folks like myself.

The second thing I tried, directly after I took photos, was the shower gel and skin conditioner. First of all, they smell amazing. You all know how scents can unlock memories? To me, the scent of these two products reminds me of concerts. My first thought was to describe it as "smells like dancing with some girl you just met but is now your best friend for the evening" but I realize that probably just sounds more weird than like a positive thing. The bottle describes Rose Jam as an "indulgent blend of rose, vanilla, and lemon" which definitely sounds more appealing than what I just typed. Whatever the smells makes you think of, it's without a doubt a lovely one.
Both the shower gel and body conditioner left me so very soft. I'm particularly fond of the body conditioner. I was a little weirded out that it's more like a hair conditioner than a lotion, as in you rinse it off after putting it on. I've come to really love it though. It leaves my hands soft, and most importantly this time of the year, moisturized. I was also pleased with the fact that the scent of both sticks around quite a while after using the product.

I'm saving my bathbombs until I need a nice relaxing evening but I can tell you they both smell incredible. I'm sounding like a broken record now, aren't I? Heh! Basic gist of the whole post though? Everything from Lush smells amazing, and leaves you incredibly soft. I am one satisfied little lady. Lush products make perfect make the perfect gift for just about anyone and anytime ever.
xoxo

  5. I think that fact that your blog doesn't really fit in a certain niche is what keeps in interesting though! Fitting in is over rated

  6. I used to love Lush! I only got to really dip into their bath stuff for a few months, but they had an amazing face scrub that I used religiously. Now that I'm in CA and we have the drought, I can't really partake in the bath bomb extravaganza, but this reminds me to go pick up Ocean Salt asap!

    1. I LOVE Ocean Salt! I actually forgot about it. I had a little tub of it but then I accidentally cross threaded it really tightly, and that mixed with the salt made it impossible to open again. I had to throw it away. :(

Now I really want to pick some up!

    2. I used to have that problem too! It would take me ages to get the lid undone, so I'd try to remind myself to close it tightly, but not use Hulk-like strength to seal the deal (haha).

  7. I feel the same way about my blog! "Insert specific niche here" has ever applied to my whole existence. Basically we're not basic and I think it's pretty damn rad.

  8. I LOVE Lush! They closed their store here in Memphis about 2 years before I moved here to Memphis, and before I moved there is one in Pittsburgh but I never really knew much about it until I started watching beauty gurus on YouTube and now I'm obsessed. I've ordered online once but everytime I go home I stock up on bath bombs galore. Snow Fairy is really incredible too, you should definitely try it. It smells like candy and deliciousness.

  9. Wow. I think I love reading your blog because you don't have a specific niche. I'm still a newb with this blogging stuff, but I kind of the same way. Rather than focusing on one thing, I blog based on my interests. I like reading niche blogs too, but your personality really shines through with all of the subject areas you cover. Just say you're a lifestyle blogger and that will cover your bases, right? :)

Also. I've wanted to buy Lush stuff so badly. The products look amazing. A Lush store opened at my local mall a year or two ago, but I've always been too poor to buy anything. I definitely want to splurge sometime.

Hope you have a great holiday!

  10. I wonder if the body conditioner could be used on the face? My skin gets so dry, flaky and chapped during our cold, harsh winter months. I've been trying moisturizer after moisturizer and nothing seems to work! I'm thinking I should give the body conditioner a try and see if it does the trick ;)

    1. Ya know, I would say I don't see why not. But honestly, Lush has SO many amazing products that I'm sure there is something already designed specifically for dry, chapped faces.

  11. I think the answer you seek is "lifestyle" as that is what your blog is about, the style in which you live. And it's lovely.

I always want to include more of my lifestyle into my blog, but I want it to be portrayed by lovely photos like yours and I struggle with that as I've mostly been using my ipad mini camera, which can take some nice photos, but I want to be able to manually focus better on things. I hope to get my old digital fuji fired up soon, but I've been asking for a new canon or nikon for a very long while.

I have also been asking for some lush bath bombs in my stocking. They look so good!

  13. I've been thinking about trying Lush products for the longest time. I love that Santa Baby lip tint! How funny is it that it actually smells like Pepsi! Haha!
I totally get what you mean about struggling with what niche your blog fits in, I definitely have that struggle too.

  14. You may think your descriptions sound weird, but they definitely add that unique touch to your blog that you can't find anywhere else! Also, it is now my goal in life to become "some girl you just met but is now your best friend for the evening" at an event

  15. I love Lush! They have great products, and also - cruelty free, which makes it even better.

  16. I love your blog- because it's not niche. Because it's you, and what you love- because you are so different than me, but we like the same things. I'm not good at explaining why I like people, I get all embarrassed and tongue tied but anyway. I like you, I think you are awesome, thumbs up!

And Lush. Oh boy. Everything (well pretty much) I use is Lush. Shampoo, conditioner, soap, toner, alllllll from Lush. I tried their toothy tabs for awhile and I LOVE them, but I have sensitive teeth so back to the yucky old sensodyne.

Anyways- Rose Jam. OMG is is ever my fave. They only release it for Christmas- and only in shower gel form- so save that shit. They have other products all year scented with it- the bubbleroon (funnily enough I tried to make shower gel out of one once), the rose argan (smell doesn't last long enough on my skin), even toothy tabs, why oh why don't they have it year round??? And will they ever come out with the perfume again, who knows, but if they did I'd buy a million of them. Obviously I'm obsessed.

  17. Aaah i love your review! Lush is my go to, and i spend all my money for boxing day sales in the shop, and get out my comfort zone to try a lot of new things! The Rose Jam and Ro's Argan is definitely my favorites (everytime Rose Jam come back i just buy a stock for the year :D) I saw the Santa Baby but wasn't brave enough to try it, now I regret a bit. Haha! Also Snow Fairy who smell like candy floss and have some glitter in it, adorable!
You should try the American Cream conditioner! It smell like a vanilla/strawberry milkshake, really good with tangled hair and the smell stay forever (used it yesterday, and my hair is still smelling lovely !)

Thank you for this lovely post ❤
