2014's goals!

Wednesday, January 08, 2014

◦ Take a roadtrip. I'm defining "roadtrip" with a three night stay away from home. It doesn't have to be too far away but I definitely want to hit the road this year.

◦ 365 photo project. A few years back I did a 365 project and felt so accomplished when I finished it. I want to do it again this year. I'm hoping it will force me to take more pictures and experiment with my camera more.

◦ Shoot 52 rolls of film. In 2013 I shot over 70 rolls, I want to keep up the momentum!

◦ Continue to declutter. Another continuation of a goal from 2013, I want to keep decluttering my life and my home.

◦ Make 15 GIFs. I used to make GIFs all the time, there is even a tag on the blog for them. But in the last year I only made one or two. I want to get back into making them regularly.

◦ Photobooth a month. Perhaps this is a strange goal seeing as I have no problem hitting up the photobooth any chance I get but I want to take at least one photobooth strip per month in 2014. More than that, one of the months has to be taken with a stranger. Something about asking a stranger to hop in the photobooth with me strikes me as hilarious and something I must do. It's obviously out of my comfort zone to do that, but that's another reason I have to do it.

◦ Visit at least one new city. Cincinnati, Portland and NYC each sound like they might be good contenders. We'll see where this year takes me!

◦ Visit 10 roadside attractions. Roadside America, I'm looking at you. I can't wait to blow this goal out of the water.

◦ Visit 10 new cemeteries. New as in ones I haven't yet visited. I've explored nearly every cemetery in a one hour radius of my house but I have my eye on quiet a few that are a little bit further away.

◦ Read 35 books. What more do I need to say about this one? I love reading and I already have a nice big stack of books I'm dying to dive into.

◦ Find two new dinners I don't hate to make.  Let's be real, I hate cooking. I'm really lazy in the kitchen and I have an awful habit of waiting until I'm starving before I think to make food. In 2013 I found two meals I could easily make and don't mind making at all (potato wedges, and paninis. I can feel all the eyes across the world collectively rolling but seriously, I don't think you understand how much I hate cooking and those two things are way better for me than ramen noodle soup!) In 2014 I want to find two more things I don't mind making. Maybe it'll even be the year I stop eating like a college student... Hah! Doubt it, but anything is better than the current!

◦ Learn at least one new skill. Anything! How to develop film, repair shoes, book binding, carpentry, embroidery, etc. I'm open to anything.

◦ Get passport. I have been putting this off forever, I need to finally get it done this year. (Hi, Elycia!)

◦ Take a class. Just like learning a new skill, I'm leaving this one pretty open too. A gymnastics class, a photography class, a jewelry making class, anything!

◦ Send 125 postcards. For the last few years I've made "send more snail mail" a goal and I feel like I've accomplished that. Each year I send more than the last. This year I'm putting a number on that goal. If you want to trade postcards, check out this post!

◦ Continue to push myself out of my comfort zone. 2013 was a huuuge year for me. Formerly a debilitatingly shy person, I broke out of my shell, or at least cracked out of it. In 2014 I will continue to do more things out of my comfort zone because I know they're good for me.
Lots of photo related goals up there! I'm not the best photographer. Heck, I wouldn't even consider myself a "photographer" but technically it is what pays the bills (It sure isn't my writing! Hah!) But taking photos is what makes me the happiest so I'd really like to put more of myself into it.

I'm really excited to start crossing all these goals off. I've already started by sending out a big batch of postcards.
xoxo

  1. Those are really inspiring goals! Some of ours overlap! I too want to travel alone and visit a new city. I'm incredibly uneasy about driving, so I'll have really pushed myself if I can do it!

I'm excited to see all the photos you'll be taking this year! I have no doubt that you'll surpass your goal! Good luck getting a stranger in a booth with you! That takes guts!

  5. These are great goals, and some of them you left them a bit open like 'take a class', which is think is super smart. I can't wait to see what take and accomplish this year. That photobooth one is crazy, I don't think even I have the guts to take a picture in a tight space with a stranger but i'm sure if you get it done it'll turn out great.

    1. I've actually done it before. Elycia and I were waiting in line to go in a photobooth and so were two other girls. The photobooth was broken, the guy fixed it and said it was on the house. They were all "you go first" and we were like "no, you go!" Eventually Elycia and I got in and begged the other girls to get in with us. It was so much fun.

This time I want to ask someone for no apparent reason.

    2. Oh wait i think you mentioned that on your blog (or somewhere online) before. Cause that sounds familiar. Its sometimes easier to talk to strangers when youre with a friend, but alone... ahhh... BUT I hope you do it and post the pictures here. :]

    1. I'm not trying to eat healthier. I'm just trying to find things more I like. I'm a ridiculously picky eater who is prone to getting in a cycle of eating the same thing over and over.

  9. I'm all about a road trip this year too!! I think it's the new freedom of being able to drive. I also love the idea of postcards but the postage here is so expensive. I think all my friends at uni would love a nice postcard every once in a while. Thanks for sharing these Kaylah.

  10. All your goals this year are awesome. The photobooth idea is pretty cool idea!! Be fun to look back at them at them when you have them all at year end!

I also love the 52 films one. I am so crappy at actually getting my films developed, I'm determined to do more this year. And fill an album.

I am super lazy in the kitchen as well. Do you own a crockpot? There are so many simple "throw all the ingredients in and leave it for 8 hours" recipes out there for a crockpot!

  19. Come to Cincy! In Fairfield we have Jungle Jim's (I work there) and there is all kinds of crazy food. The international section is so fun, just to look around and see all the weirdness.
And downtown Cincinnati is fun especially in the summer. The Contemporary Arts Center is a blast and is free on Mondays after 5p!
We also have an Ikea; that is always fun to visit.

  20. Come to Cincinnati! Man Man is playing at the Southgate House on January 21st, and there are tons of cool cemeteries here and in Northern Kentucky.

  21. Cincinnati is pretty awesome, and we have some awesome cemeteries here, too! You should come visit and check out Spring Grove Cemetery in downtown. They've got some seriously old graves there and great sculptures.

  22. I'm with you on the cooking. I'm still in college but I eat sort of terrible. Loads of leanpockets and hardly anything home-cooked. Share your recipes when you find some good ones!!!

  23. Oh gosh I hate cooking too. I find it so stressful! I do enjoy baking though, which people think is strange, but they're completely different in my opinion. You can take your time with baking. Good luck with the cooking and your many other adventures!

  25. These are great goals! I love the idea of asking a stranger to take a picture in the photobooth. That would be out of my comfort zone too. I absolutely love developing film! I wish that I had more time to do so because it is a time consuming process, but definitely one that I recommend if you're interested.

  27. If you haven't seen the Tarrytown (Sleepy Hollow) cemetery in NY, it's a must. If you go in the Fall, even better. It's gorgeous. As is Laurel Hill (PA) but I think you already went there.

  29. Hi Kaylah,

would you like to get a postcard from Germany? I love sending postcards. The address mentioned in the post is still correct?

  30. Something that makes your postcard goal more easy (and also more fun!) is postcrossing(.com). You can request an address and send a postcard around the world. After it's registered you will receive a postcard yourself from another random place in the world!

  31. hey i hear you can make quesadillas with a panini press... but i'm not sure that aligns with pushing you outside your comfort zone ;)

have you ever tried crockpot meals before? if you hate cooking then something like that might work since most of the recipes are simply chopping a few ingredients and then putting them all in a pot and forgetting about it for hours! oatmeal, lasagna, soups, cake... i've heard good things!

anyway, at the risk of sounding like an ad i'm going to stop now! i think my new skill this year will be learning calligraphy— i can't wait to see your list come to life in 2014.

    1. Holy cow, how did I never think of panini press quesadillas!?!? Oh maaaaan, I know what I'm making this week.

Have fun learning calligraphy. I was just thinking the other day how I'd love to learn.

  32. Love this, Kaylah. I've been obsessively reading your blog lately and I love how organized you are and how well you manage your time and mostly how you are super into the stuff you like to do, like mushroom collecting! I'm inspired. Keep it up. I'm going to adopt a few similar goals in my resolutions this year, too.

I love your blog! Thanks for being consistent and always posting!

  34. Awesome Goals! Really excited to see what roadside attractions you visit.
Also, I noticed in your other post about your 2013 goals that you have been thinking about taking an arial gymnastics class? I recently started pole dancing/pole fit and it has been AWESOME. I'm fairly certain that it serves as a foundation for the arial classes. Maybe something to look into! You might love it like I do!

  36. Lovely goals! I can't wait to start my list (I always wait until my birthday to make a "before" list, since it's so close to New Years Day, but reading all those nice lists makes me itch to start mine).

Also, I don't know if you're familiar with it, but there is a website called Skillshare which I think is awesome. It's an online teaching platform, where you can learn lot's of different things and if you're into it, you can also teach a class. I'm currently following a class about hand lettering quotes and phrases and hopefully by the end of it I can illustrate some beautiful and inspiring quotes. :) (heads up: if you use my link to subscribe to a class, you'll get $10 off your first class, and I'll get $10 off my next class, didn't want to be sneaky about :))

  38. Wow you have a bunch of awesome new goals and some pretty detailed! I hope you can accomplish them like you did with this year :) I can't wait to see you cross them off and I totally consider you as a photographer (you have the skills, the eye and the ambition to photograph, which is enough). :))

The 125 postcards goal is af fun idea, do you know Postcrossing. It is a website where you can sign up, and send postcards to people all around the world, and you receive postcards from around the world.
I think it would help to reach your goal ;)
