October 2013 - The Dainty Squid

Thursday, October 31, 2013

Were you hoping for a post with my animals all dressed up for Halloween? Even if you weren't, you gotta admit this is cute. Doc makes a pretty cute mermaid...er...merMAN, if I do say so myself.
You're probably wondering why two of the TDS crew are left out of these pictures. Leaf, my big orange kitty, was too large for the costume. The tail didn't even come close to fitting. Klaus, of course, was too big to be a merman. I had a really cute costume idea for the two of us but didn't have time to photograph it. Perhaps I'll just shoot it sometime soon. We don't need Halloween as an excuse to dress up, right?

Anyway, I'll keep it short today! Hope you have a happy Halloween. Don't eat too much candy. I'm spending my Halloween exploring Philadelphia. Then I'll be dancing my butt off dressed as Alex DeLarge tonight when I see Man Man for the third time this month. It's gonna be a great day.

Pssst. Be sure to check out old Halloween posts of the animals dressed up here -  2010, 2011 & 2012.

West Virginia // land camera photos

Wednesday, October 30, 2013

So that trip I took with my mom and grandpa to visit where he grew up? It was awesome! I took so many great photos and heard so many stories. It was an incredible bonding experience. I'm very happy I had the opportunity to go.

I shot exclusively with my land camera and T2 on the trip (but still lugged around my 60D with my macro lens in case I saw any neat insects or mushrooms. My poor back!) Today I'm sharing some of the land camera photos. I love these. The two main locations these were shot at are the family cemetery and the high school my grandpa attended. I'll tell you more about both in another post but for now here are the photos...

You can find land camera film here: black and white or color. If you're interested in buying a land camera check out your local thrift store, but if you're in a hurry there are always some floating around on ebay. I bought mine from Film Photography Project on ebay two years ago or so when they were having a sale. They do currently have a few in their webstore. They're slightly pricey compared to what you'd find at a thrift store or estate sale but they have been tested and come with batteries. Plus they have really great service that I can attest to! When I first got the camera I had no idea what to do with but it actually came with an instructional DVD and that's pretty stinken awesome if you ask me.

Klaus. Where do I even begin with this boy? He can be a giant pain the butt some of the time but adopting him really was one of the best decisions ever. Evenings like this one cement that...
I wanted a dog because I wanted someone to take on adventures with me. Cat are super awesome, don't get me wrong, but I wanted a camping companion, a beach buddy, a canine co-pilot. Klaus and I have our days where we want nothing to do with each other, where's being a total jerk of a dog and my patience has worn thin but then we'll have a massive string of days where we're a dream team. He's my best buddy!

The day these photos were taken we made some of our best memories together so far. It was his first time by water that wasn't the beach. He's afraid of the water at the beach so I made the assumption he didn't like water. I was little bummed because I wanted a water dog, a dog who'd be super stoked to head down to the river for a swim with me in the summer. I assumed wrong because as soon as we got down to the water he jumped in. He had no qualms splashing around, chasing rocks as I'd throw them in and just generally making himself a big, stinky, dirty dog.  I've never seen him act like such a nut. It was so great.

Can't wait to go on a million more adventures with you, Klaus!

Supplies used...
Milani Fresh Teal
Revlon Entice
Essie Naughty Nautical
Incoco nail polish appliqu├ęs
Seche Vite as a top coat

Ghosts! I am obsessed with these nail decals. I wanted to back away from typical Halloween colors for my Halloween nails. I also just wanted to use a few of them so I could hoard the rest away (in a sealed container so they don't dry out, of course) to use at a later date. The pattern is just so fun, it'd be a shame to use them only around this time of the year. Ghost nails are totally acceptable anytime of the year. Plus, just like the last design I shared from the Incoco Halloween line, these are glow in the dark.

Last weekend my mom, my grandpa and I went down to West Virginia to visit some of his old haunts. It was an excellent trip!  I have tons of photos to share over the next week or so but this post is more about the ride there and back. I was co-pilot most of the trip and let me tell you, the drive from Ohio to West Virginia this time of the year is b-e-a-utiful! I took a handful of photos of the road in front of us at different times during the trip.
I rarely shoot series of photos like this, a handful of photos with a certain aspect that ties them together but I'd like to more often after taking these.

Life Lately...

Mushroom seasons is in full swing! They are everywhere and I am relishing in it. Duh!
I mentioned it a few weeks ago, but I bought a new macro lens. Prior to this I was using macro filters that I totally thought were the bee's knees but um, wow, this lens is kind of blowing my mind. It's kind of intimidating how how awesome it is. It's taking me some time to learn all about it but I'm certainly having fun playing with it!
We still haven't had our first frost here in Ohio but I've been preparing my deck for winter. I'm cutting down on the plants I'm taking care of and clearing out things that have died or are dying. Instead of letting these flowers sit outside on my deck unappreciated I decided to make a few bouquets for around the house. There are still some more growing so I'll get a few more bouquets before winter! It actually makes the bouquets a little bit more special knowing that I grew them.
I'm rearing some fishfly larva! My dad saves dead bugs for me, he recently gave me a small jar with a fishfly in it. A few days later there were eggs on the side of the jar! A couple more days and they were hatching. I set up a little aquarium for them since the larva spend their life in the water. It's been so awesome to watch this all happen. They're still very tiny but they've definitely grown quite a bit since they hatched.
I've been planning a little solo road trip to Philadelphia! I bought concert tickets to see my favorite band two nights in a row (I could cry I'm so stoked), booked a cute little house to stay at through Airbnb and have been plotting out the places I'll visit. I'm excited about this trip for so many reasons. Of course I'm stoked to see my favorite band but I'm also excited for the drive there. Philly is a seven hour drive, which will be my longest drive thus far. I'm really looking forward to exploring Philadelphia, any places I have to visit?
I recently met Mickey and I definitely feel like we clicked. We've explored some antique shops around Cleveland, went to Cedar Point (it rained the majority of our visit, but it was still a blast!) and discovered the best beach in Cleveland to hunt for beach glass. The pile in the photo above (whats not sorted by color in jars) was found in one trip where we spent maybe two hours looking. That's just my pile too, she had an equal amount. That's kind of insane considering I normally find less than a handful at my local beach. It's taking a huge amount of willpower not to go to this new beach everyday!
This puppy dog got neutered at the beginning of the month. This means he's officially mine! When I adopted him I had to sign paperwork saying I'd get him neutered as soon as he was old enough and if I didn't they'd "repossess" him. Of course, I had planned to but that wording - their wording - made me really uncomfortable so I'm very happy to have that done. His recovery was super quick and I got to keep his testicles for my curiosity shelf. Win/win!

Happy Thursday!
