pentax k1000 & home for the friendless...

Thursday, February 28, 2013

A little while back I bought a pentax k1000 so I could learn the ropes of film photography. I was previously shooting with a Canon T2, which was great but I wanted more control over what the images looked like. Well I finally took my k1000 out for a spin last weekend after nervously avoiding touching it for a week (I really didn't want to be let down!).

I took her out and shot two rolls at a cemetery in Erie, PA that's right by one of my favorite places to eat (the co-op, go get a baked tofu, you can thank me later). I've been past this cemetery a million times but never realized just how large it was. It was super sunny that day but the sun was a bit deceiving because it was bone-chillingly cold. We mostly drove around looking for neat headstones to stop and explore around briefly before jumping back in the warm car. Anyway, here are some of my favorite photos from the day...
None of them strike me as particularly special or mind blowing photos but for my very first time using this camera I am extremely encouraged. I'm really excited to learn more about this camera and make lots of memories with her. The pentax k1000 is super cute (I love the look of old-ish film cameras), sturdy and has a really satisfying shutter noise. Two thumbs way up! I'm really happy I finally took the plunge and bought a new film camera. I had been debating it for so long.

Anyway, back to the cemetery - I just might have found my second favorite headstone ever! (All time favorite is The Girl in Blue, duh!) "Home for the Friendless"? I literally screamed with excitement when I saw it. I love nothing more than headstones that say strange things. What an incredibly insensitive thing for a headstone to say, right?! Well upon further investigation (because of course I had to go home and google it immediately) The Home for the Friendless was an orphanage. I even found this old geocities site put together by a woman who had stayed there in her childhood. Super neat, right?! I love when I'm able to find a bit of history about a headstone, it makes exploring cemeteries so much more fun.

Hope you have a lovely Thursday!

what I wore : dachshunds-tooth

coat - Scalloped Colorblock Coat c/o Oasap
belt -thrifted
cardigan - Target
shoes - vintage
camera bag - c/o August Wrinkle
glasses - c/o BonLook

Isn't this dress so much fun? Obviously I'm a much bigger fan of cats than dogs but I love (and can't resist) clothing with fun patterns. Even more than that I like when a piece of clothing looks kind of normal from far away (like hounds tooth in this case) but when you get close you realize it's silly pattern - like a bunch of dachshunds! I want one of this dress in every animal imaginable, I think it would be really awesome with squirrels.

I have something silly to admit. I wanted to name this post "just dachs-ing" because I've always pronounced dachshunds "dash-hounds" so it would be like "just dashing". So clever right? On a whim while finishing up the post I decided to double check to make sure my little joke made sense. Well I'm really glad I did. Although I guess I kind of defeat the purpose by telling you all about it right now instead of trying to pretend I never thought that's how it was pronounced. The moral of the story is I stink at pronouncing things. (Which kind reminds me of how Elycia and I now say "gif" as "gif, jiff, G-I-F" since neither of us agree with the "correct" pronunciation of the acronym)

Hope you have a great Wednesday!

frozen sand dunes

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

In the past I've mentioned my love of the beach in all seasons (probably a million times)! I've even blogged photos of my local beach in the winter before but it didn't quite look like this. Last week I took a trip over to the beach to see what it looked like and by golly, it was gorgeous. The wind had formed a bunch of large frozen sand dunes. These photos really don't even begin to do them justice since there really isn't a great scale to show just how large the really were. But believe me, they were huge and just frozen solid.
I even found some beach glass. It took a little bit of digging to get it out since it was frozen into the sand. But how awesome is that?
As neat as the beach is this time of the year I really am looking forward to a hot and sunny day to go splash around in the water. It's been too long!

On a slightly unrelated note - Guess what! Last night I drove to the beach from the park and then home from the beach. That was my first time on the road driving and I think I did pretty stinking awesome. It felt so natural, after the initial shock of "hooooly cow, there are cars coming my way!" wore off. Ha! I'm so excited to drive around more. I still, obviously, have a lot to learn but I feel really great about this. Why did I wait so long to start learning to drive!?!!

Hope you're having a great week!

PS. For reference of what my beach normally looks like here are some posts with photos : winter before the snow , & summer.

au revoir, blue!

Monday, February 25, 2013

Last weekend I finally ventured away from my natural hair color (blue!). I had been purposely trying to fade my hair for a week or so with long soaks in the bubble bath, and lots of conditioning treatments before I bleached it. That blue was not coming out! I finally decided just to go for it. The bleach took out the majority of the blue but there were still some spots left with light blue. Luckily putting the pink over top made those spots a pretty purple. It all worked out perfectly.

I used Punky Colour in Flamingo Pink, Plum and Purple (each mixed with equal parts conditioner because it helps stop the color from bleeding, and staining plus I really love to condition) I used plum on the bottom layer, purple in the middle and flamingo pink on the top.
I'm pretty smitten with it, but somehow this doesn't quite satisfy my urge to dye my hair. Perhaps because pink and purple also feel fairly natural to me as well. All I know is I'm not comfortable crossing off my new year's goal of venturing outside blue and purple hair just yet. I think it's going to take another color to mark that goal off...

Hope you're having a lovely Monday.

coat - Vintage
brooch - thrifted
necklace - c/o Oasap
belt - came with the dress
tights - Target
shoes - c/o Wanted Shoes
camera bag - c/o August Wrinkle

I inadvertently added another camera bag to my collection with this bag from August Wrinkle! I just thought it would make a cute purse but come to find out my camera bag insert fits inside perfectly. It's actually way better than previous bag I was using the insert in, so much roomier. It also has a ton of pockets which is always a plus. I've been pocket obsessed for as long as I can remember. The more pockets a backpack had the more likely it would be the one I chose for my school year. Even to this day my decision to buy a coat, purse or anything really can be based on how many pockets it has. What can I say, I've always liked to carry way more stuff than I really need. I mean, c'mon, who doesn't need a whole pocket devoted to lip balm or gum. Haha!

Hope you're having a lovely Thursday!

PPS. This is the last post (at least for a little while) with blue hair! Last weekend I ventured into new hair color territory. Can't wait to share photos!

10 things making me smile...

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

1 // this fly that opens up so you can hide your tiny treasures inside.
2 // This beautiful pup.
3 // a brand new wallet for my new driving permit.
(clearly I'm still pretty stoked about that. If you didn't catch it in yesterday's post, I got my temps!)
4 // getting back the first two rolls of film from my new camera and feeling encouraged to shoot more.
...But more on this another day.
5 // organizing my cardigans by color and giving them all matching hangers.
6 // Pretty icicles in the sun.
Maybe the part that really makes me smile about these is that right after I took the picture Crum came trotting over and gently poked his nose into them making them all come crashing down in front of us. I couldn't help but laugh.
7 // monsters under the covers.
8 // seeing what a little collector my nephew is becoming!
9 // photos of flowers from the summer!
Boy, oh boy, I cannot wait to tend to tons of beautiful flowers again soon.
10 //  this amazing brooch from Hungry Designs.
What's making you smile today?
