The County Fair // on film

Thursday, September 12, 2013

Last week on Labor Day I spent the day with my parents. In the morning my mom and I went thrifting because I heard there were going to be big sales. Eh, not so much. We both still came home with some awesome stuff though. After we got back we headed to the Geauga County Fair. I somehow managed to only shoot one roll of film despite the fact it's such an impressive fair. There is SO much to see there. The animals are my favorite, of course. But I really do just love whole environment, the smells, the sights, the feeling!
County fairs are the best. I was in 4H from the year I was old enough until I was seventeen. I used to start counting down the days until the next fair as soon as the current years one had ended. I'd save every penny to blow on slushies, cotton candy and fart bombs. It was the highlight of my year each summer. Even attending as an adult now I still feel a little rush of excitement.

All of the photos above were taken with a Canon T2 and Fuji 35mm Superia X-TRA 400 that expired in 2010.

  1. I LOVE county fairs. Ours don't start until next month but I am already excited about the funnel cake, hand-squeezed lemonade, and adorable animals. The llamas are so cute!

  2. This looks like so much fun! I love going to the fair. I went on my birthday this year and had a blast watching the pig races and the lumberjack competition (ah, life in the Pacific Northwest!). Fairs are the best.

    1. Whaaat?! Your fairs have funhouses!? I've only been in one funhouse in my whole life and I absolutely need to visit more of them.

  5. I can't say I agree with you, as I know the fate of all of those animals. I avoid fairs, like a zoo/aquarium/circus plague. :(

    1. Actually you don't know the fate of all of those animals. A lot of animals at the fair aren't sold during the auction and are just there to show/teach people about them.

I respect your opinion to not visit zoos and the like so if you could please respect mine that would be great.

  6. what animals did you raise in 4H? I was always interested, but never got to be a part of that. I did raise a lot of chickens in my teens though, I enjoyed taking care of tiny raptors! Have you ever seen silkies?

  8. We are getting ready to go to the Washington State Fair and I am so looking forward to the animals, rides, and food. It's been years since I've been to a fair and since moving to downtown Seattle after living in the country most of my life, I miss animals so much! :-)

  9. Ugh! I LOVE county fairs. I've been known to spend hours walking through the animals and actually getting emotional I love it so much. It's a problem. This fair looks so traditional and perfect. Since I live in Orange County our fairs just aren't the same as back when I lived in Iowa and Washington.
