still growing...

Tuesday, August 20, 2013

It's been over a month since I last blogged about my plants. I've had some great successes and also some that really just aren't doing so hot. On top of buying soil that I ended up hating (I'm getting so many weeds, and it basically turned into a clump of mud which can't be good for the plants) it's  been a weird year weather wise. I've honestly watered my plants less than ten times, it's been that rainy. Regardless, I still have a deck full of beautiful flowers that attract all sorts of neat bugs and hummingbirds, block my neighbor's view of my deck and add a whole bunch of color to my yard so I'm happy! Here's how they're looking now...
I think I might be most excited about my peppers. I'm growing jalapenos and bell peppers. I bought them on a whim. Surprisingly enough, they're both doing very well. I have about five bell peppers and a whole bunch of jalapenos. I picked one of the jalapenos to cut up and put on nachos and cheese for dinner one night last week and it might have just been the most delicious one I've ever eaten. It was SO hot! Next year I definitely want to try my hand at growing more things to eat. That's easier said when done when you're a super picky eater though. I know there are lots of things I could grow but it's determining which ones I personally will actually use that is the hard part.

To get an idea of how much everything has grown up you can see photos from when I first planted everything here, and photos of them in June here.

  1. I've always wanted to grow things but never really have before. Your plants are lovely, though!

  2. I went on vacation for a week and had no one to water my plants, so they're completely dead. I think this weekend I'll finally pull them out of the pots (I know, it makes my porch look so ghetto) and go investigating for late summer/early fall plants. maybe these will be successful!

    Yours are gorgeous! :)

  3. how neat! the flowers look lovely and the bell peppers as well. we tried container gardening - lettuce, green onions and tomatoes but they all didn't end up doing so well. we were bummed but we hope next time it'll be better!

  4. Everything is looking gorgeous! How fun that your bell peppers and jalapenos are taking off. Sorry to hear about all the rain! It's actually been a surprisingly dry summer here in the PNW, so I'm actually looking forward to some rainy days.

  5. They're all so colourful and wonderful - I also love that they shield you from your neighbours. I would use my porch a lot more if it was screened off from the neighbours somehow - plants may be the way to go!

  6. Wow, I'd love to have a selection of plants like these! I think the third picture is my favourite - what's the plant with the pink streaks down the leaves? It's beautiful :)

    1. It's some sort of Coleus.

  7. That´s some pretty stuff you got there!

The weather has been reallyyyyyy weird this year to so my beloved pumpkins died soon after they got the flowers :C

  8. Eep! So beautiful! Our weather here in NC has been really weird, hot cold, rainy dry, can't predict the weather what so ever. It rained so much in June that it was continually overcast and so most of our tomatoes didn't get enough sun and died. Very sad.

  9. So pretty! I wish I had some outside space to grow things instead of my windowsill! I love seeing all your plants though!

  10. Oh my gosh, those plants are gorgeous! Your blog has actually inspired me to buy my own planter of succulents (there are three of them). It brightens my humble apartment and I'm totally obsessed!

  11. I wish I had more of a green thumb. I seemed to inherit all of my dads genes but that one haha! I would love to try peppers someday, stuffed jalapenos are one of my favorite things to eat.

  12. Wow, everything looks great! I'm amazed at how un-eaten (uh?) the flowers are. I'm nothing close to a green thumb, and bugs always seem to get to my flowers before I can do anything about it!

Congrats on successfully growing food, too! Stuff from the garden ALWAYS tastes better than from the store :) You could always give away the veggies and fruits you decide against eating. Or if you have a market nearby, you could even sell 'em!

  13. What are the red flowers in the last picture called? I love them so much, we have them at my job and they're so soft and fun to touch! I've always wondered what their name was!

  14. Love these pictures! I wish I will have a nice garden like this someday!

  15. I got back from Korea too late to have a garden this year, but NEXT year I am going to plant ALL the things!!

  19. We just tried to grow a bunch of plants but they all kinda died :( Guess we aren't as green as we thought we were :P But living in a small apartment with no light prolly doesn't help either.

  20. I'm really jealous of your peppers! Mine are no way near yours yet. But I agree with you, I'm wanting to try and grow more food because I think it's a pretty cool idea :)

  21. I love the little pepper! I'd love to grow my own peppers, I end up buying them at the supermarket all the time and I'd save a bit of money. xoxo

  23. Ugh! Your plants look amazing! I'm actively trying to resist the urge to go out and buy like 6 more. Your deck looks like an absolute wonderland.

  24. Your flowers and plants are beautiful. I am so grateful that I discovered gardening. It is so calming and nurturing. Just going out in nature and taking care of my flowers can change my entire perspective on things. I'm happy to have found your blog, it's nice to see someone enjoys gardening as much as I do. =)

  25. Oh your plants are perfect! So pretty!
I'm really jealous and can't understand why mine either wither, dry up or drown :(
