Life Lately

My land camera and I have been getting lots of quality time together. I'm now on the hunt for a cheap flash for it. I definitely have the best luck with this camera outside so a flash isn't needed but I'd like the option of using it indoors too.
I love pressing flowers but I think I love pressing pretty fall leaves even more. I'm surprised leaves seem to be falling so early this year. I've found quite a few so far that are super cool. I like how these are only yellow in the inside. I could easily spend hours just wandering around looking for neat ones.
I made paper! I even included some petals from plants I grew out on my deck. I randomly had the idea to make some after I needed a background for a insect display I was working on. It's stupid easy to do, messy as heck and there's tons of room for experimentation. I'll definitely be trying to think of excuses why I need to make more...
Cicadas have been out in full force. I found a handful of dead ones while I was out exploring and brought them home to pin. I haven't really worked much on my insect collection lately but this jump started my interest in it again. I'm keeping the nicest one for myself and making gifts with others.
My new desk arrived and I immediately set it up. Ya know, after spending fifteen minutes cursing and sweating dragging the box in the door. It's perfect! I was originally a bit hesitant to get a black desk for fear of it making the room look dark but it seriously looks so great. I can't wait to share some photos of the room soon. This is my fourth and favorite office set up so far!
I've been writing lots of letters as of late! I really love sending out snail mail. Getting mail (that isn't bills!) is one of the best simple pleasures ever. Sometimes I get all worried that two of my favorites things are dying - film and real mail. I hope there never comes a day when mail is too expensive or slow to be worth sending it.
Klaus picked up his first stick. I'm well aware this sounds really dumb and random but that puppy just melts my heart. He found it in the yard while we were outside and carried it in the house. He basically wouldn't put it down for anything. It's currently sitting on the rug in front of his crate and he grabs it every time he gets out.  He'll take it outside with him, hold it while he goes potty and never drop it until we're in the house. I've been letting him up in bed with me for a few minutes each night before he goes in his crate and he even brought the stick into bed a few nights ago. He. is. so. cute!
Yeeeeeah, I'm still nuts about plants. I've been trying to limit my plant purchases to special occasions and when I find something I just can't resist. These three are my newest babies. I'm not feeling so confident about the Venus fly trap despite the fact the owner of the nursery gave me all sorts of tips. The other two plants are thriving though. Both have grown a significant amount since I took these photos. (I take pictures of all my plants the day I bring them home so I can keep track of how much they've grown. Having photos to look back on always makes me feel great about how well they're doing.)

Hope you have an awesome day!
xoxo

  1. I love getting mail too! And I'm a total cat person, but I have to say Klaus is making a pretty strong case for puppies.

  4. My guy and me have had a couple of venus fly traps who've just gone and died on us, but after some google:ing we found out that you're supposed to water them with distilled water, and NOT our super calcium-rich swedish tap water. Too bad, because I think they are adorable.

    1. Yeah, that was one of the things the guy mentioned. He said tap water was fine as long as you let it sit in a glass for a few days first. I've also heard boiling the water first is good.

  9. That is too cute. One day while out on a walk, my dog found her favorite stick. She refused to put it down and carried it home. Six years and 3 homes later, she still has that stick. She's still obsessed with it! There's just something about a dog and their favorite stick! For context... we live in the woods. There is NO shortage of sticks. But she only has eyes for one :)

  12. I killed my venus fly trap. :( I put it in soil instead of the moss-mixture thing you're supposed to put them in.

    I feel bad about it.

  13. Is that an L-shaped desk?! I have been looking for a good one for quite some time. My current desk is huge, bulky, and just not working for my space anymore!

Also, maybe I ask where you go your mousepad? I may be a little obsessed with Chevron right now...

I recently bought my corgi a deer antler to chew on since he destroys all his other toys and he treats it the same way Klaus treats that stick! It goes everywhere with him. So cute. :)

  17. I found your blog on bloglovin and had to follow! Your photography is beautiful. I really like your photos and Klaus is too cute for words! Flower pressing is something I've always waned to try, but never set aside the time to try. By the way, I enjoy getting mail too! I've been writing my penpal from Japan since we were both 16-years-old (we're now bother 24 and both turning 25 on the same day in October XD). Anyways, I really like your blog!

  19. So much good stuff here. After seeing all of your land camera photos, I really want one of my own! I also really love your plants and your paper, and can't get over how cute Klaus is! I love when animals bring you their favorite toys. When I got home after being away for a few days a couple of weeks ago, my cats would not stop bringing me their toys! I woke up the next day with a good 6 toys on the bed. Too cute!

  21. I love that you use that land camera a lot. I have a few I need to really use, but film is pretty rare to come by for me. and it would be awesome to see a tutorial on making that paper and the experimentation you did!

  22. Getting snail mail is very special, I mean e-mail is nice, but if a person has taken time to actually write something by hand, that is just too cool and sweet.
Klaus has a safety stick :)

I hope it is okey if I use your place as an inspiration for my new flat, you have such cool things and impeccable taste.

  24. Do your leaves hold their color when you press them? Every time I have pressed leaves they turn brown when they dry out all the way.

  25. I think the venus fly trap needs to be planted in moss, not dirt. It can only be given distilled water too, since it only grows naturally in a swamp in the south so is pretty particular.

The one in my house is in a cup with holes in it, planted in moss, and the cup rests in a dish with distilled water in it. It sucks up what it wants.

    Good luck!

  27. Handmade paper?! AHHHH I love it!!!!! There is a place in Indiana called Twin Rockers Paper Company. They are a fairly well known handmade paper company in the world of paper (the world of paper is bigger than you would think...) and you can go on a tour and even make your own paper there! Their paper molds are much bigger and have a fancy watermark and everything. If you're ever in the mood for one of your road trips to go through Indiana, definitely work checking out.

  28. Dude I love making paper! I did it once for a science fair, even though it was the most unscientific thing ever, and I ended up going to state with it. Totally weird. I was surrounded by robots and fancy filtration systems and didn't place at all, but it was fun.

  32. My very favorite is when dogs grab a stick that's too big to bring through a door with them. Watching them try to figure out how to get it in the house is so adorable, heheh!

I also love snail mail, but find that I don't have so many people to be penpals with anymore! Time to catch up with friends, I think!
