I’ve been seriously considering adopting a dog for some time now. A month or so back I even did… for a day. I brought home a dog who was “great with cats”, we bonded on the hour drive home and I was so happy. I thought she was the one. She even had her toenails painted! I introduced her to the cats after we had spent some time together outside. She was nicely sniffing them and they were sniffing back. Everything and everyone was cool, calm and collected then out of the blue she tried to attack, not play. She just freaked out. I may not know very much about dogs but I do know the difference between play mode and attack mode. My stomach dropped, the look on this dogs face just made me sick. Luckily she was still on her leash. The decision was immediate, she had to go back to her foster mom. Of course, her foster mom wasn’t happy but neither was I. I didn’t want to give up on the dog so quickly. I felt really guilty but my gut told me it wasn’t a good situation. My four cats will always be the apple of my eye and my absolute top priority. I would never do anything to put them in danger and having this dog (even under intense supervision) would likely be bad news. I could never be comfortable with her again. My dreams of having a dog went to the back burner for a while.

After I spent the fourth of July weekend at my parents I fell even deeper in love with Crum, their Great Dane. Crum’s favorite person is definitely me (Sorry Mom, you know it!) He followed me around all weekend, we had such great bonding time. It made those doggy dreams come back full force. I see Crum once a week or so depending how often I go over to my parents and they’ve had him for a little over a year. If he’s this attached, that great of a companion and doesn’t even spend that much time with me, I can’t even imagine how incredible it would to have a dog of my own. So I started browsing PetFinder again. This time no adult dogs.

I didn’t want a puppy. I know they can be a pain in the butt and honestly, I didn’t want to have to train one. But for my cat’s safety and my peace of mind, a puppy was the only way to go. An animal with a clean slate, no previous problems with any other animals. One who could be raised beside my cats whose personalities it would come to understand before he got too big. I bookmarked and emailed a bunch of shelters with pups I wanted to visit. One of the last little guys I found said that from 12-5pm you could just come up and meet him. You don’t have to ask me twice to go meet some puppies!

It was love at first sight. I scanned over all the other dogs there but I kept coming back to this same one. He was all curled up and snoozing with one of his siblings. After a quick snuggle session my mind was made up. I was his.

So that’s how I came home with this little guy…
This is Klaus and he’s already my new best friend.
We had a bit of weird start. On his first full day home he got sick. So sick he had to go to the animal ER. It was really scary. After less than twenty four hours with him, I was already in love. Long story short the vet said it was stress. Moving to a new house, leaving his siblings, etc. Poor guy made himself sick over it all. He got some shots, some special food and when he woke up the next day it was like nothing was ever wrong. He was back to being a crazy little puppy.

Aside from that everything has been so great. He’s a dream! Not only is he absolutely precious, he’s so smart. He’s learning so quickly. Each day is getting a little easier and a little easier. Puppy mom life is hectic but it’s a lot less scary then I thought it would be. When things get rough I just remind myself that I’m raising my best friend. This is the little guy that I’m going to take on adventures and spend my days exploring with as soon as he’s old enough.

The cats aren’t too sure what to think of him. If I had to make any guesses I’m going to say Leaf will be the first to warm up to him. He even tried playing with one of Klaus’s toys! I’ve also caught him sitting outside of the crate while Klaus was inside, just staring at him. Doctor Octopus is very curious and often comes over to Klaus but most of the time hisses and walks away shortly after. Professor and Squid are curious as well but haven’t yet ventured over to him. They’re keeping their distance.

All in all, the cats aren’t taking it too hard which is so great. Everything is normal other than Squid hiding when Klaus is out of his crate (which isn’t too crazy since she hides whenever company comes over. She’s very shy.) This is actually even going easier than when I brought home each cat and introduced them to each other. After each new addition they’d always fight. There’s been no fights at all.

Klaus really isn’t interested in the cats either. He’s tried playing with Leaf’s tail and a few times he’s playfully chased after Doc but most of the time he minds his own business when they’re around. I’m curious to see how things progress on this front. I look forward to them playing and cuddling but I understand that comes with time.

Klaus is a plott hound mix. He’s around two months old and came from a litter of seven pups. He has one white toenail and another that’s currently half black and half white. He doesn’t like to get his paws wet or to walk in tall grass but we’ll work on those things. He loves to eat, sniff everything and play with a toy fox that has a really loud squeaker in it. He’s afraid of other dogs barking but oddly enough, showed no fear at all when put beside my parent’s giant Great Dane. He’s doing awesome with crate training and seems to pick up things really quickly. The two commands he’s understanding the best right now are “leave it” and “down”. Sometimes when he’s in his crate and feeling lonely he makes noises that sound like a dying seal, it’s truly awful. He’s eager to please and is already walking on a leash like he’s been doing it for months. He likes crawling around under the coffee table (which is 4.5 inches high) and I’m pretty sure there’s no place he’d rather be than my lap. I’m a proud momma.

This is surely the start of a very great friendship.
xoxo

He was probably sick from the shelter. Our dog got sick immediately after coming home with us, too, and the vet told me that shelter dogs are usually kept on sort of a "good enough" health basis, where they get kennel cough, are given enough medicine to feel better (but not completely heal), put back out for adoption, get sick again… the cycle continues like that.

So once they get to their forever home it all crashes down on them. Kennel cough is basically a fact of life; if you adopt a shelter dog, he's bringing home one hell of a cold. Our baby almost had to go to the ER Vet, too.

Also, I'm guessing that other puppy wasn't so much cat friendly as they weren't really sure yet, and figured a little puppy wouldn't have developed into being cat sharp yet. It seems like an inborn personality thing – some dogs just hate cats, right from puppyhood.

He's a cutie! I would definitely say there's Plott in there, he looks very much like a Plott hound. I love that tiger stripe pattern, that's my all-time favorite coloration on dogs.

Your cats will show him who's boss pretty quickly, so I wouldn't worry. As long as he's not aggressive, and you make sure that the cats get privileges he doesn't (like, our dog sleeps in a crate but the cat sleeps in bed with us) he'll recognize that they're higher up in the family pack and he'll be good to them.

The Dainty Squid July 30, 2013 - 1:16 pm

Yeah, after adopting four animals I'm starting to realize shelter animals really aren't the healthiest, which is super sad.

Like I said in the post, the previous dog was a full grown dog, not a puppy. Apparently her foster mom had cats but failed to mention that they lived separated. The cats upstairs and the dog downstairs so I guess cat friendly to them was not going up the stairs to bother the cats.

Katie July 30, 2013 - 3:26 pm

Oooooh, yeah, okay. I don't know why I was picturing puppy. Apparently my eyes skipped right over that. It's been that kind of a day. My bad!

I'm definitely going to keep up with taking rescue animals, but I'm not sure about shelters in particular. Our pup's a shelter dog, from our local Humane Society, but our cat I got out of a newspaper ad back in college. We've really had very few problems with her, and she's going on 12 years old now (we've had her for six). I think you just have to basically have the vet on speed dial for the first week or so and be prepared to shell out extra cash for sicknesses with shelter animals. Oh, well. I love that my pets are rescues, so I think in the long run it's still worth it 🙂

I cannot wait to see how big your little boy gets! I went through the pictures again just now and I love those big paws!

Katie July 30, 2013 - 3:28 pm

Oh, and something I thought of – our pup has dark and light nails, and I've found that when we take him on regular walks on paved trails/sidewalks/roads, that the long walks wear his nails down well enough that we don't need to specifically trim them. It might be something you can shift over to when he's old enough to go running/walking with you. He might also trim his own – my friend's Australian Shepherd just chews his own nails down to a certain length, and keeps them trim on his own. Dogs are both awesome and weird.

Rae - Say It Aint So July 30, 2013 - 1:09 pm

congrats on your new addition! i think getting a puppy was the right thing. we wanted to adopt a dachshund but i wanted an adult dog no matter what. but it turns out they are very prey driven and don't usually do well with cats unless they are raised with them. so we ended up with two old lady pugs who love the cats and it worked out perfectly! i hope to see pictures of all your critters cuddling someday!

The Dainty Squid July 30, 2013 - 1:18 pm

"Two old lady pugs" makes me think of little old pugs with curly wigs, bad lipstick and pearl necklaces on. Haha, I like that.

What a great intro to Klaus (perfectly suited name, love it!) sounds like you two are gonna have many adventures together. Cool that they all are getting along. Congrats, and welcome Klaus!

Misti K July 30, 2013 - 1:14 pm

Oh my goodness, what a dapper gentleman! I can't wait to see him grow up!

My Italian Greyhound, Tremont, also has the one white nail and the rest all black! In fact, I think it might be the same nail, on his left front paw!

I share with you, trimming dark nails is incredibly hard…for me, at least. I still sometimes nick my little guy and then we both cry. So I heartly recommend styptic powder and special nail-time-only treats. It helps it go smoother for Mom and pup. 🙂

The Dainty Squid July 30, 2013 - 1:20 pm

Thanks! I was so worried about cutting his dark nails that I barely cut them at all. They definitely need a going back over.

The bad thing about Klaus though, he doesn't really like treats. I've tried two different kinds already and he's been indifferent to both. Guess I just need to buy some more for him to try.

Karin Dalziel July 30, 2013 - 1:34 pm

We've had good luck with little pieces of canned chicken as treats. It's pretty inexpensive if bought in bulk. Messy, though!

Zuzia July 30, 2013 - 2:44 pm

My dog loves dried meats as a treat. Like these dried bacon strips and dried chicken strips. One time we even bought these strange treats – one was a slice of dried banana wrapped in some dried chicken, and another was a dried sweet potato with chicken inside, and she loved those too. There are also these chocolate drops for dogs which we used when we were training her not to pee in the house.

Also make sure to buy him something to chew on for his teeth! Our first dog had neglected teeth and her breath could kill!

Good luck 🙂

He is the most precious little puppy I have ever seen. Gorgeous. God, and his name is so cute! Klaus.

Can't wait to see him grow up around your cats. He seems so, so sweet. Gorgeous eyes. Oh!

Courtney July 30, 2013 - 1:24 pm

This is the start of something beautiful! Congratulations on your new buddy 🙂

Bienvenue à Klaus!
He is so cute!!!

Karin Dalziel July 30, 2013 - 1:33 pm

We had a similar experience when we got a 1 year old dog and introduced him to our 5 cats. He was OK at first but freaked out when one of the cats sniffed his toy. I was so heartbroken, and cried all night. We kept them separated for almost two months and slowly introduced them, and now they are fine. I hope to get a puppy and a kitten next time, so my dreams of cat and dog snuggling will come true!

Martina @ snapshotsandwhatnots July 30, 2013 - 1:47 pm

Try using peanut butter on a stick when you want to cut his nails – I use it to cut my puppys fur with a clippers and once the peanut butter is there you can do whatever you want to him.

For the first few weeks my pup wasn't interested in food treats at all, wouldn't take them no matter what I tried, so I was worried he wasn't food-motivated and that I'd have to use toys/play to train him which is harder. I did that for the frist few weeks but by the time he was about 12 weeks old he was all about food. It think it takes a while for their sense of smell to fully kick in.

Klaus is adorable! Adorable – I can't want to see more photos and watch him grow!

The Dainty Squid July 30, 2013 - 2:38 pm

Oh! Good idea! He loves peanut butter. He just got some for the first time last night in a Kong toy and he went nuts over it!

Oh man, too much animal cuteness going on over here lately! I love it! We had a similar situation but backwards with introducing a kitten to grown up dogs, and our lab tended to be cautious and forever afraid of the cat, but our sheltie and cat became best friends and it was pretty darn cute watching them play together. Looking forward to seeing how your animals relationship develops too. Yay for new best friends!

dissolvedintosomething July 30, 2013 - 1:51 pm

Congratulations! He is beyond adorable! Though having a puppy can be frustrating and exhausting at times, it does really allow you to bond with them and get them accustomed to your lifestyle. We got our basset hound when he was about three and a half months and we love him like crazy!

Christoffer Blomlöf July 30, 2013 - 1:56 pm

Klaus, that is an awesome puppy name, but does it mean he barks with a german accent? 🙂

The Dainty Squid July 30, 2013 - 2:37 pm

Hahah! It sure does! 🙂

WHAT A SWEET PUP! Interesting to hear about getting a pup to work around your kitties, I reckon I may have to do the same, but I would like to rescue a dog too. It's funny how he seems unbothered by the cats but they're still warey of him, really shows how different the two animals really are.

Sarah Beth July 30, 2013 - 2:07 pm

OMGOSH he is darling!!! Reminds me of the puppy my parents got 2 years ago after my old Golden passed away. I seriously need another puppy in my life….

Absolutely precious!
I feel like everyone around me, and now you haha, are getting dogs! I wish I could join the puppy fun but we couldn't fit one in my apartment. My mom just rescued a 7 year old pit mix who is the absolute sweetest. I wish I could have a big dog friend to take for walks and cuddle with. But for now my big half maine coon kitty will do (he's super cute though so no complaints here)

Alice, Pretty Confused July 30, 2013 - 2:27 pm

Congratulations Kaylah! He is such a beauty! Tiger dogs are the absolute best, although I might be a bit biased, I swear Klaus looks exactly like my Scallywag when she was little! Puppyhood can be a lot of work, but it is definitely worth it, you feel so accomplished when you manage to teach them something new (especially potty training). I think the worst part for me was the chewing stage, our husky went through 10 pairs of my shoes in about four months before managing to train her out of it. On the plus side I am much better at putting my stuff away now rather than leaving anything on the floor!

Wishing you lots of luck and happiness xoxo

Sarah LoCascio July 30, 2013 - 2:27 pm

Congratulations!!! He is really beautiful. I think you made the right decision getting a puppy. We have two cockateils and we got both of our dogs as puppies so that they would get used to the birds and learn that the birds are their co-beings..not playtoys. We have NEVER had an incidents and everyone is happy. I think this will be true for Klaus and the Kitties;) I wish you all the best with Kluas, this is going to be wonderful!

I've been seeing him on your instagram and I LOVE his name. It totally suits him! I'm glad that the kitties and him aren't fighting. My crazy little pup tries to play fight sometimes. The cats are not doing for that. He truly will become your best friend and that's the best part. 🙂

Meghan Clark July 30, 2013 - 2:39 pm

Awh! Congrats Kaylah! Ive been watching your posts on instagram and was waiting for this post! Having a puppy is so much fun! They are so curious. Enjoy these times while you can! They grow quick!

Eeee! He is so cute!! This took me right back to when Alphonse (my corgi) was a puppy. Somehow my hyper little 6 lb puppy turned into a hyper 30 lb dog!

Angel July 30, 2013 - 3:12 pm

Yay congrats on the new addition. I've already been stalking his pictures on your instagram, he is adorable. The first year of puppy life is always so fun and filled with the most learning. When you get into your routine it's great. You're going to love it!
Also, I know how you feel about trying to adopt an older cat-friendly dog. I'm sorry it didn't work out, but atleast you gave it a shot. I've been thinking about getting a dog-friendly cat/kitten for the last year. But I've done some research and most huskies have a high prey drive. And even though I've seen my dog sniff cats outside before without attacking, I've also seen him try to catch birds and squirrels… so it might not happen for me. Well have to see maybe I have to bring the right cat home.
Anyways good luck with your first year of puppy life.

Sammi July 30, 2013 - 3:12 pm

Oh my goodness. That FACE! He is absolutely adorable. And I love his brindle-type coloring. I love the photo of Klaus with the cats. It sounds like things are off to a good start. My cat came into the picture after we had our dog for like, 12 years… they don't really get along well, but they mostly tolerate each other (my dog is a huge black lab and wouldn't hurt a fly, and my cat is always the instigator). I think going with a puppy was the best thing you could do for your cats. They aren't going to feel threatened, and Klaus will grow up being with cats, so that'll be normal for him. Congratulations on adopting your little guy!

Congratulations, Kaylah! There is nothing better than the feeling of helping an animal out and knowing you could quite possibly be saving their life. I just saved/adopted my second cat (Tina!) from a farm in South Dakota and every time I see her content kitty face, I know we did the right thing. Good luck!!

He is SO cute! I've been waiting for this post. I love that last picture, his little butt is just precious. I'm so excited for you and it's so great your cats took it so well.

I totally forgot about when I crate trained my dog Miley, I taught her the command "go to your room" when I put her in there and it was the cutest thing when I would say those words and she would trot right into the other room and get right in.

Congrats on your new pup and I can't wait to watch him grow!!!

Oh, he's so cute. I've been watching him on Instagram and it's nice to see more photos. When my parents got a cat, my dog would follow her around and then run away when she turned around 🙂 Later on she gave him baths.

Kaitlyn Petry July 30, 2013 - 4:59 pm

I'm currently looking to adopt a puppy to add to my one cat family. I was really nervous about having a dog and cat at the same time, and was amazed when I started investigating. Something like 1 in 3 homes with one species, also has a pet of the other species, and any breed of dog that is properly raised around cats can learn to co-exist. I'm still planning on steering away from huskies and that kind of thing, and I'm definitely afraid of adding an older dog who may not have that socialization.

Anyway, I've absolutely loved seeing pics of Klaus on instagram and I couldnt wait for his introduction here! I would love to hear more about how you introduced him to the kitties, and what that transition has been like.

Also, your pics of him are incredibly cute! I had never heard of plott hounds before, but yesterday I saw a dog near my apartment that looked just like an older version of yours, and I said "that's a plott hound!" very excitedly to no one in particular. Haha.

Jade Sheldon-Burnsed July 30, 2013 - 6:10 pm

He is such a gem. The two of you are going to have some special adventures, I just know it…

candace July 30, 2013 - 6:26 pm

He is just the cutest! One of my dogs has black nails, and they really are so hard to trim. Just do a little at a time, and it'll be okay. Play with his feet a lot, so he gets used to it.
So happy you found him! That last picture especially makes me smile 🙂 And the video you posted of him going up the steps…so sweet.

Nicky July 30, 2013 - 6:44 pm

Congrats! He looks a cutie. We adopted a puppy in late March, and he's six months now. I have three cats that are the apple of my eye as well, and I knew a puppy would be the best way to go. A little warning, although it may go differently for you. After a few weeks, Bosco became a little more hyper and acted like, well, a puppy. He gets really excited and wants to play with the cats, however he's big, hyper, and clumsy, and my cats are pretty mellow. He's never aggressive. Two of the cats just ignore him, or cry/hiss at him. Tegan, my alpha, tolerates him and will even lay with him sometimes. I am thinking once he's fixed and gets a little older, he'll calm down. We crate him too, and that's the best thing we could have ever done. Like you said, it's a lot of work training yout best friend!

Cara Howard July 30, 2013 - 7:01 pm

He is so so SO handsome! I love him!

Mindi Wooley July 30, 2013 - 7:22 pm

Awww what a cutie! I love his name and his ears are so cute!!! Congrats!

Crystal July 30, 2013 - 7:23 pm

He's so cute! If you live near a PetCo, you should see if they have a puppy playtime. They're usually free, and it's an hour or two where puppies can just play together. Socialization is super important for dogs, and the earlier you start, the better. I hope you and Klaus become BFFs!

The Dainty Squid July 31, 2013 - 10:32 am

Oh neat! I'll have to look into that! Thanks! 🙂

Gina July 30, 2013 - 7:27 pm

Oh my! Congratulations on your gorgeous little bundle. What a stunning pattern on his fur.

My parents and I were really lucky with training when we got our rescue pup (Nearly 13 years ago- she's looking a lot grayer now!) Had spent her life in kennels but never needed toilet training- instant learner with no mistakes… In terms of training to sit etc it was easier with the fact that she is immensely food motivated. XD

A pup best friend is really the best thing in the world! Can't wait to see him going on adventures with you.

My girl Waylon looks just like your pup! We got her about a year ago and ever since then I keep meeting more and more dogs that have her distinctive brindle markings… (I call her my little hyena). Ours was a stray found in Detroit when she was about 6 weeks old. We love her so much! And she gets on famously with our three cats.

Keep your eyes peeled (gross!), and you'll be amazed how many Klaus twins there are. All the cuter, I say. Have fun!

Ohh I've been waiting for this post! I was really curious what breed he was, because he's adorable obviously!
I have three cats, so when the time comes that I am living in a place that allows dogs, I think getting a puppy might be what I'll do too 😀

Aishling O'Neill July 30, 2013 - 10:26 pm

I only just got a new pup recently too! He also got sick when we where bring him to his new home. Stress can do that. I hope you have lots of adventures with Klaus! He is lovely 🙂

I was waiting for a name since I saw you post photos of him on instagram- what a great name it is! My dog Cubbie has a single white nail too!

Alexandra Pettinato July 30, 2013 - 11:49 pm

What a little cutie!!! Puppies are SO much work, but it's incredibly rewarding to watch them learn, grow, and develop their personalities. Also, you now have a new BFF! 🙂

I wrote about adopting my pup a few months ago. He just turned one. He's a pug chihuahua cross, and the second love of my life haha. If you're interested to read about my puppy experience, check it out:

Awwww, he looks like my Animal. I have a lab/plott hound mix. Absolutely wonderful dog and very easy to train. A big lover and snuggler. (P.S. I name my dogs after Jim Henson muppets). You can see a pic of him sleeping here. http://erinscreative.blogspot.com/2012/09/photo-366-36.html

He's wonderful! Congratulations! I have wanted to adopt a dog for a very long time but also have four cats, your story is helpful as I really dread finding a dog and then them not all getting along!

Rosie W July 31, 2013 - 12:06 pm

Sorry to hear about your initial fostering experience, but what a cute pup you have ended up with! He is a dream! 🙂

Klaus xD LOL!
That's a bad name in Germany, but if i had a new cat, i would call it 'Adelheid', thats also an bad german name.
I know the Situation between older Cats and a puppy. My Dog is now three years old and my two cats are 12 and 16 now. The one Cat, named 'Sissi', has a good relationship to our Dog named Csilla, but the elder cat, named Jeannie (yeah, i named her after the Sitcom 'I Dream of Jeannie') don't like dogs. Now she's old and won't run anymore, so she always sit down and meows Csilla and distributed slaps. The Dog is really cool with Sissi, but with Jeannie she's always flipping out and run around the cat and snaps to the Tail and lick over her head.

Sry for my not so good english 😉 I just wanted to tell.

Have a nice day!

KAT July 31, 2013 - 4:19 pm

I've loved all the pictures you have been posting on IG and his name is perfect! I adopted my dog when she was a puppy, and although it was an impulsive decision, it was the best one I've made, I love her so much. I still can't believe she'll be 6 in December!

steven beaudry July 31, 2013 - 4:56 pm

Oh my God. All of these pictures are making me fall in love with Klaus. He has the most bad ass name and he's adorable!
I can't wait to see him grow!

Kitty Cat Stevens August 2, 2013 - 3:54 pm

the day i came home and caught my kitty, Olive, snuggling on the couch with my roommate's dachshund— my heart absolutely melted. i never thought i'd see the day! even though they don't live together anymore, whenever my she visits they are automatically bffs again. it's adorable and i think raising them together definitely helps. you're right— it just takes a little time and patience!

i thought i was too much of a cat lady to love dogs but then i realized i just only like well-trained ones. i have a few friends with wonderfully friendly pups that don't jump all over you and shove their nose in your crotch (so embarrassing. . . ) or destroy everything in site. i guess i learned that a dog is only as good as their owner, ya know? i still don't think i could ever own a pup but i'm glad to know i actually do l have the ability to love dogs after all. your lil guy is cute and i'm sure he's gonna be such a great adventure companion some day!

oh, and happy birthday! have a great weekend =p

Elif August 5, 2013 - 2:22 pm

How come I haven't seen this post earlier! Can't believe you got a puppy, you're such a cat lady to my eyes but I love this. I don't have any pets so seeing photos of your pets really do make me happy 🙂 Hopefully they'll get along well forever!
