watermelon agua fresca - The Dainty Squid

watermelon agua fresca

Saturday, June 15, 2013

Last September Elycia and I traveled to Chicago for Renegade Craft Fair. We enjoyed a weekend of fun, new friends, exploring a new city and good food. It was an incredible time that I think of all the time. When I'm thinking about it though I'm mostly just obsessing over the food we ate. We ate lunch  at Native Foods Cafe both days we were there. The menu was a little intimidating at first. I'm a pretty simple eater and at restaurants I never really have a choice of anything more than a veggie burger, if places even have that. I finally decided on a portobello burger, it was my first time eating mushrooms and holy cow it was amazing. I seriously dream about the day I get to eat it again.

Their drink selection was different than any place I've ever been to as well. They didn't have any pop and I'm not a fan of tea or lemonade so I was stuck with watermelon agua fresca. I had never had it before, but it was my only option and guess what... I absolutely LOVED it.
Ever since anywhere we go I whine about how I want watermelon drink. Finally a few days ago it hit me "why don't I just make some?!" Duuuuh!

I can't exactly call this a recipe because I literally just cut up a seedless watermelon (minus the rind), and threw it in the blender. I added a pinch of sugar which seemed to bring out the watermelon taste even more and put it in the fridge to cool off. IT IS SO DELICIOUS. Plus when else do you get to drink something that's hot pink naturally?!
I don't know if it's just me or what but I get sick of drinking water in the summer. On the same hand I'd like to stay away from pop and artificial juices when it's hot out and I'd like a refreshment. This has me really excited to experiment with other fruit drinks.
xoxo

If you're anywhere near a Native Foods Cafe, I hate you, please go enjoy some food for me.

  2. So pretty! And it sounds delicious! I get sick of water too at times (sometimes it's just not as refreshing as I think it'll be), so this seems like a great option! I love that retro glass, too!

  7. I love watermelon juice!! I usually have to add water to mine since my blender is a million years old and gets stuck if I don't add a generous amount of liquid :p My other favorites are apple and strawberry juice with a little ginger, and mango and pineapple with coconut :)

  10. I love agua fresca. My grandma would make it for my cousins and I every summer when we'd go visit them in Mexico. You should try squeezing a lemon or lime in it and add a pinch of salt instead of sugar. Delish!

  12. looks gooooooooood! :P
I love watermelon. when I eat it (people who know me think this is weird) but I love to put a little honey on it with some lime juice. it is so good. A lot of people put salt on watermelon, but I think that tastes nasty.

p.s. I know how you feel about options at restaurants. I VERY RARELY have choices because I am a vegetarian. These restaurants need to give us more options! I like to make my own burgers with beans and rice. :)

  14. I usually drink half juice half water.. I like the no sugar added ocean spray (or the no corn syrup version, which is a little cheaper.) tazo teas are also great for a refreshing cold drink. just put a tea bag in some cold water for a few minutes. the passion one is the best and doesn't even need sugar. The orange one is nice too.

  16. Watermelon is delicious with finely chopped mint. Add some crushed ice, finely chopped mint, squeeze of lemon or lime, and a bit of brown sugar to your watermelon and you will pretty much have the best drink ever! A local cafe did something similar, and it took me a while to figure out what made it taste so fantastic.

  24. Mmmm! I love agua fresca! I made it the first time last year for the forth of july family barbecue and it was such a hit, I made more the very next week. Now it's my go-to summer drink. (It's also good made with cantaloupe!)

I add a touch of honey in the blender with mine and garnish with a basil leaf and it's the perfect refreshing summer time drink. It just feels more refreshing than water and tastes so good, too!

  25. I couldn't help but giggle at the tidbit at the end- I live in Chicago and it's very easy to get to one of their locations. Is it bad that I really want to go now that you mentioned their portabella mushroom burger? :D
