Elycia + Kaylah visit the falls!

Tuesday, June 04, 2013

Over the weekend Elycia and I had a long awaited reunion! Things had been so busy the last two months and we hadn't been able to get together since March. We met up in Niagara Falls on the US side ...because I still don't have a passport and had a blast. I have a bunch of pictures I want to share and some I still need to go get developed but here's a short recap of our exciting weekend.

We visited the Buffalo Museum of Science! It was an excellent museum, certainly better than a lot of others I've been to. More on this another day though, I have so many pictures to share from here.
I visited a casino for the very first time and won big! Hah! I don't think casinos are my thing, at all. I'd rather waste my money in other ways. But, hey, I needed to give it a shot.
I fed made a new pal despite the "do not feed wildlife" signs which I honestly didn't see until after our little moment together. But c'mon, lil dude was eating a cupcake wrapper when I found him. French fries are better than actual garbage even if only by a little. I wish I could have snatched him up, put him in my camera bag and kept him.
We pulled over in a sketchy neighborhood just to get a jumping picture in front of a giant pink elephant.
We visited oodles of over priced gift shops, giggled at weird keychains, YOLO shirts ugh, and other strange souvenirs. I'm not even going to lie, I kind of regret not getting the "#1 human" keychain.
The wax museum of history sounded promising but really... it was kind of frightening.
We went nuts over pressed pennies. Elycia and I both collect pressed pennies and Niagara Falls is full of the machines to get them made. There was one in nearly every gift shop we visited.
I ate Indian food for the very first time. I'm already craving more...
The Niagara Aquarium was small but still pretty great. I fell in love with some seals but really only took pictures of this dude. Stingrays are so funny to me, I love their little faces.
We took tourist photos. I don't get it, why do they have the very worst lighting in places they encourage you to take photos? Ugh. Regardless, this photo still cracks me up. That was our ridiculous pose for the weekend, double hand peace signs every chance we got. Ha!
We also took a dip in the motel's pool despite the fact it was kind of chilly and I didn't bring my swim suit (Thank goodness for matching bra+undies sets. Haha!). We spent the night playing cards against humanity and probably annoyed the heck out of the folks next door with out ridiculously loud laughter at the truly offensive cards.

All in all, it was a blast! Next time I say we hit up the Canadian side of the falls though, I've got my sights set on quite a few museums over there.
xoxo

  2. This reminds me of a trip I made with my school in 1997. We drove from Toronto to the Niagara Falls to Buffalo, which is the partner city of Dortmund in Germany, where I live. Thanks for the reminder :)!

  5. I'm from Buffalo NY & it's great to hear that you enjoyed the museum & Niagara Falls! Buffalo often gets a bad rap as a "dying" city as does Niagara Falls. I'm glad you posted about the area & showed others that we have a lot to offer up here!

  6. I had Indian food for the first time 4 years ago and I absolutely love it. It's what I'd choose to eat forever if I could only choose one type of food :)

  7. wait, the first time you ever ate Indian food?! what the hell! It is my all time favourite food ever. Home made currys are the best.

  8. Sounds like you had a great time. I've been to Niagara Falls before but, when I was a kid. It's awesome and now I think I want to go visit it again. I'm really glad you had fun and tried out new things. I'm trying to get myself out of my old habits. Trying out new things is a great thing to do. It's a wonderful experience.

  9. That looks as if you had a lot of fun!
And I am so happy that there are more people who collect pressed pennies. I love them and press one every time I come across a machine (always only one, even if there are multiple designs to chose from). Oh well, and I don't own any pressed pennies to be exactly, but pressed old german pfennigs, Euro cents ands swiss centimes. And only a few weeks ago I made one in England. I love to have them in multiple colours.
But somehow I feel as if they are getting rarer, isn't it? There used to be so many machines to make them, nowadays I stumble across boring medal vending machines much more often. A pity.

  11. It always amazes me that you guys have black squirrels, we just don't have them in the UK! The first time I saw one in my aunties garden I was a bit confused! :-( I miss Canada and its freaky coloured squirrels lol

  12. There is also THE GREATEST Indian restaurant on the Canadian side, just at the top of the mass insanity that is Clifton Hill, right next to the Tussaud's Wax Museum. I drive the 30 mins from NotL just to eat there. The Dhal Makahni is INCREDIBLE. And now I'm salivating.

Also, there's dinosaur mini-golf. I mean how can you go wrong there?!

  13. Oh also! If you liked Pushing Daisies, check out the creator's earlier show Wonderfalls. It's hilarious, and takes place in Niagara Falls! It was blatantly filmed on the Canadian side despite taking place in the states. Weird.

  14. Haha, that looks like such a fun trip. I love penny-squashers, too! I used to have quite a collection but what with various moves and adding a husband and then a kid to my household, who knows where half my stuff is anymore.

I was really lucky to go to college not just in the UK (which is full of awesome curry restaurants) but in a town with one of the top Indian restaurants in the UK, so I love when friends discover the awesomeness of Indian food (and miss being able to get a nice takeaway korma whenever I feel like it!)

  17. What a cute squirrel! We don't have black ones here in Texas (at least I've never seen one)-but oh my gosh-what a cutie! I like the Stingray photo too. One of the aquariums here in Fort Worth let you hand-feed them. Their mouths feel so neat taking food!

  18. GAH you guys were so close to where I am! Like maybe an hour away! I've never been to the Niagara aquarium though, I don't think. loling at the picture of the two of you in the barrel. And I saw the black squirrel on Elycia's blog and how strange - we don't have them in Rochester, but they have them further downstate. It's so weird they're on the American side!

  21. Great photos, so jealous of your meet up! I'm trying to organize a meet halfway with my bestie, only it would be about a 9 hour drive for both of us, and it would be in the middle of nowhere...but, I'm convinced you can have fun with your best friend no matter where you are :)
Also, she just sent me a link to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKffm2uI4dk

  27. I collect pressed pennies too! They're such a cool souvenir and also the least expensive souvenir (besides postcards, which I also collect). It looks like a super fine time. Also, that bug in the museum photo is ginormous! Do you know what kind of bug it is? I'm curious.

  33. Once you get your passport Canadian Niagara is the best! We enjoy going to the Butterfly Conservatory, where the butterflies are flying free and will land on you. There is also a wonderful Aviary housed in an old corset factory. 3 stories of birds and an Indonesian teak tea house.

  40. Cards Against Humanity is seriously my favorite game. We started playing while we were studying abroad, and haven't stopped since. I think they say it on the webiste, but the Container Store definitely has the perfect boxes for the free cards, if that's what you have. We add new cards every time we go on an adventure, so we've filled up four boxes (Over double of what there originally was) with the cards.
