my three strays - The Dainty Squid

my three strays

Wednesday, May 08, 2013

One of my favorite things about this time of the year (I mean other than gardening, not wearing forty layers to stay warm, seeing all the plants bloom, having every window in the house open, etc.) is the stray cats. The don't come around too often in the winter, usually just swing by to eat and run, but in the spring and summer they love to lounge on my deck. A few days ago I walked out to find my three favorite strays relaxing in the sun. It's not uncommon for them to stay there all day and just sleep. It makes me so incredibly happy that they think of my deck as a safe haven. I provide food, fend off the mean strays and give a real good head scratching.
Carl is the gray cat, Lloyd is mostly white with a toupee, and Cornelius is the black and white cat.

These guys are only three of the many I see on a regular basis, they're my favorite though since they're all so friendly. All three, on separate occasions, have spent time with me while I garden, read or just relax in the sunshine. It's the best!

By the way, I'm still very interested in finding a home for Lloyd (the mostly white guy with the awesome toupee) He's the only one I'm 110% positive is a stray. His previous family moved away and left him behind. I've mentioned it a bunch of times before but he really is the sweetest cat. He likes being held, and is great with kids. He absolutely deserves to be a forever home. If you're anywhere near Cleveland, OH or Erie, PA and are interested in providing a fur-ever home for him please please please email me. He just needs a bath and trip to the vet and you've found your new best friend. ;)

Hope you have a wonderful day!
xoxo

  1. If you're not sure a cat is a stray cat, you shouldn't feed them. That's a horrible thing to do if they already have a family that loves them.

    1. I don't agree, at all. If a cat wanders into my yard and is hungry there is food to eat. No one is forcing them to eat and certainly no one is forcing them to hang out.

    2. I agree! I know my (inside) cats spend half the day eating. They would be THRILLED to have some other house to go to for extra meals! haha.

    3. If those cats do have homes and they want food, they'll find it one way or another! Now they don't have to go through extreme lengths or risk their safety to do that!

    4. As long as you aren't letting the cat into your house and keeping it there, I don't think feeding them isn't a problem at all! My old cat was such a sweetie and was popular all over town; our neighbors all knew him and would pet him and give him treats and meals and it was perfectly fine. Happy cats always come back home even if they get fed elsewhere.

    5. I know that my outside cats get food from other places and I like knowing that they are always going to be cared for.

    6. When my calico was an outdoor kitty (she refused to stay in) I'm pretty sure half the neighbourhood fed and loved her. I don't see an issue with it. She always came home as she knew where she lived. Also how exactly is Kaylah meant to shoo them off without being cruel? She sets out food and cats come have a chomp. I don't think she's going to chase the ones she THINKS have homes off with a broom. Honestly can't you just be happy she's doing something kind? Her blog entry even says she only wants to find Lloyd a home as she is unsure of the rest, it isn't like she's stealing cats. Just offering up some dinner. Geez.

  2. Oh my, these are the cutest cats ever. I have a deck and have never seen a stray, but I would *absolutely* do the same thing. In fact, I think you're an angel for feeding them and providing safety for them and they know it which is why they continue to come back. I almost spit out my drink when I read about Lloyd's toupee!!! Hahahaha. He has the neatest markings and sounds like a total sweetheart. Unfortunately I live in the U.P. otherwise I would totally take him! Thanks for being a guardian for these kitty babies ♥

  3. It warms my heart to know that you are so sweet and kind to those adorable kitties. Seeing strays always make me sad that they don't have anyone looking out for them. I'm so glad Lloyd, Carl and Cornelius have you :)

  4. I love that they all have like, the same expression on their faces. It's the face of an outdoors cat I guess?

  6. What a bunch of cuties! We feed our strays, too. We actually have two resident strays, as in we spayed and neutered them respectively, and keep them vetted. We have others, too, that come for a quick morsel or tidbit, lounge in our sunshine and enjoy our shady brambles. I love seeing them out in the yard. :) Carl is so handsome, I cannot imagine how anyone in their right mind could have left him behind, unwanted. Poor fella. I hope you can find him a home.

  7. I'm happy that you're friendly to stray cats. There's so many people out there that would try to shoo them away and ignore them. You're definitely an amazing woman.

  8. I hope you find a home for Lloyd!! I am not a 100% cat person, but I could never imagine moving away and leaving an animal behind. That seems so mean. :(

  9. Back when I lived in Okinawa, I ran a humane animal shelter (a very small one) out of my home. The stuff they do to strays there is disgusting. It was hard keeping all of those strays (at one time, I had 8 cats in my house, not counting my own kittles), but so rewarding and worth it when I found homes for my little friends. I don't have any cats anymore, because my husband doesn't like animals (he has no soul); the hardest thing was finding homes for my own cats before I moved away. I miss them, and my strays.

You're lucky you have strays that like to come visit you! I just moved into a new place, but I have 2 strays who like to follow me when I run/walk. :)

  10. Oh gosh, they are all so cute! It's such a sad story that those people moved out and just left the cat, how can you just leave a cat? Stuff like that makes me a little angry, haha! Too bad i live in the Netherlands, his toupee is quite impressive!

  15. It's great that you provide a safe haven for these strays. They are gorgeous boys and looks like they have cattitude (sorry had to say that. We have a cat lady in the neighborhood who doesn't take great care of her cats so we put out food, water, and the occasional sprig of catnip. The cats enjoy it.

  17. Kaylah, you just need to accept that his wants you to be his mummy and adopt him! You don't have enough cats in my opinion :P

He is adorable though, I wish I lived anywhere near you, I would snap him right up!xx

  18. Oh Lloyd is so handsome! It breaks my heart to see the strays in my neighborhood (who are either feral or skittish), I like knowing that you're there to feed the ones that show up on your deck.

  20. Lloy'ds toupee made me giggle. :) I think it's awesome that you take care of them and try to find homes. I also just love that they have the "homeless" look, with the rough looking fur and glaring eyes!

  21. How cute! We have a stray too, and she just had babies...so now we have 5 strays, lol. They're so cute though, and we found them all homes :-) We've also seen a few sniffing around looking at the make-shift bed we put together for them and I think we're getting more, haha.

  38. You should put collars on them and attach notes saying something like "do i belong to anyone?/what is my name?"... Maybe you can figure out if they do belong to someone. Someone did that to my cat once, and we were kind of creeped out, but it made us realize that he probably has a bunch of other human friends that he visits during the day. haha. we retaliated by putting our own collar on him and starting him on a diet. =P ain't nobody stealing our Boycat.

  39. It's so great that you take care of animals that aren't yours. Even if these cats belong to someone else, I'm sure they'd be grateful for you feeding them.

  41. I would so love to do this. Unfortunately, I live where dogs get loose and I won't want the strays to be scared. I also live were there are raccoons, which would eat all the food.
