humble beginnings

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

Last year I admitted to being my neighborhood's crazy flower lady. What do you mean you don't have forty potted plants on your deck?* They're so pretty! This year I got a slightly earlier start on planting so hopefully I can grow even bigger and more beautiful flowers, not that I had any problems last year. After I was done planting and watering each one I took a photo. A "before photo" to be able to look back on when these babies really start to grow and bloom. Most don't really look so impressive yet but I'm excited just imagining how great they're going to look in a few weeks.
This year I'm trying to step outside of my comfort zone a little with flowers. When I first started doing flowers each spring (three years ago) my mom made most of my planters and filled them with flowers she's super comfortable growing - petunias. Last year I got a bunch of petunias because I know I could grow them well and then branched out a little with some marigolds, salvia (which did both did AMAZING), and a few other things. This year I got all my old favorites, a few new things and I'm even trying my hand out at growing some peppers. Since it's still early in the season I'm now on the hunt to find more flowers I've never grown before to plant.

Anyway, here are my some of my newly planted goodies. I'll definitely be sharing photos of them from time to time to update you on their growth because as silly of a hobby as growing flowers on my deck is I can't help but get really into it. I LOVE FLOWERS!
And of course, it's not even possible to talk about my flowers without including a photo of my planting pal, Lloyd. I think he might even like planting as much as I do.
xoxo

*I said 40 as a joke but I'm currently resting at a solid 30 planters full on my back deck. Although who knows how long before I add more. Haha!

I'm on a cactus thing also, and on bonsai ( I think I'm not gonna have so much luck on bonsais...). And on trees, fruit trees! Just to have the sweet taste to catch my own fruit! :)

Plants it's more my mom's thing and she does it so well. Like you! Your petunias look do beautiful! Perhaps now you can try orchids :) And your mushroom bench it's so adorable!!

  5. My mom really likes gardening, too. For a few years when I was in elementary school, one of our side gardens was all these huge, overgrown sunflowers. It literally looked like a jungle. We've since had to cut them down (hello, bees), but they were so cool.

  6. Nasturtiums are super easy to grow. In ground or larger planter. They are REALLY pretty and, best of all, the leaves AND flowers are edible. They have this slight peppery flavor and are GREAT in salads. You can get seeds and they come up really quick and last a long time!

Take the leap into some herbs too. They are easy to grow and many have pretty flowers (basil and mint are 2 of my favorite).

    LOVE your deck!!

  7. You can't ever have too much flowers around! Especially when you don't really know which ones are good and which not, you gotta try them all right?

  10. I am only up to about 15 planters full of flowers right now but I really want about 20 more. Gray and Logan have told me we have enough flowers but I think they're crazy! You can never have too many flowers!

    1. I've actually considered that. It'd cut down on mowing, and look FABULOUS. I wonder I could do really do that...

    2. I'm planning on doing it, whenever I can get out of this Apt. and into a house! My bf's mom is a gardener and her yard is full of flowers and vegetables, very little mowing involved.

  13. You should try planting some lantanas. I love them. They come in many different color combos, and the flower part changes color as the flower matures. They are super cool. The Dallas Red is my favorite one. It goes from yellow to coral to hot pink.

Crazy flower lady is a good thing to be! Those ones in your hanging basket are especially pretty. I don't have much luck with flowers in the TX heat, so, instead, I'm a crazy cactus/succulent lady.

  19. Love all of these! I wish I could grow something like this and it be maintainable. In Texas there's so many water restrictions.. plus I wouldn't really want to use water for that, you know? Anyway, the colors are so awesome and I'm sure when they get a little fuller they'll look even more amazing.
Do you have trouble with the cats knocking them over? Digging into the planters?

  20. This is awesome. I love your owl planter. I found some unusual containers to use as pots and did some guerilla gardening last month: http://www.maryhassound.com/2013/05/guerilla-gardening.html

  29. Pretty! I can't wait until I move into my own house and have a garden I can decorate with flowers. I might not be able to fit as many as you as it only has a little garden, but you never know!

  30. It looks beautiful! I can't wait to have a house, or at least a balcony again, to have more plants. But my grandma has a small cottage like house, and I think she has even more plants than you. I'll try to take pictures one day.

So, don't feel crazy, just proud of your work. :)

  31. I do remember well your last years post, at Summer, about your deck full of beautiful flowers (: I must say, it was inspiring ^^ I never really thought or had a thing for gardening and such, but after seeing your flowers and actually starting noticing the different kinds of trees, vegetation and such, really made me want to grow my own garden and deck, just like yours ^^ Even vegetables and herbs hehe And again this year :D I just can't wait to see them on Summer ^^

  34. I have also become a little plant crazy this year, and come home everyday with something new to plant and love. I love when they become big and full, so I fertilize like crazy. If you don't, give it a whirl, you'll LOVE the results :)

  35. Those are all so pretty. Don't worry your not alone. I would be doing the same if 1. I didn't work in a plant nursery and 2. James wasn't allergic to bee or had a epi-pen. Guess I will have to watch your garden grow.
