Life Lately...

I found the most delicious sugar cookie recipe and made a whole bunch of them. I made some tooth ones for myself and I made some RuPaul Drag Race themed ones for Elycia and I to enjoy when she came out. We were going to have a little party to celebrate the new season but I maybe had the date wrong of when it premiered and we were a week early so we obviously didn't get to watch it. Buuuut we ate the heck out of those cookies anyway. *You can find a tooth cookie cutter here.

It seems like the window bird feeder will be full for months and months and no birds will visit then all of a sudden there will be tons of visitors. Last week brought some mighty mighty braves birdies. All four cats were sitting inches away from the window staring at this guy. (Yes, I can count. Haha! There are only three in the photo above but Professor was just out of frame in the chair) It was so cute to watch them obsess over this bird!

While Elycia was out we took lots of photobooth pictures, as per usual! We also went to the arcade in the mall (which I didn't even know existed!) We played a ton of games of skeeball and I beat her twice at air hockey! It was a blast. I think going to the arcade needs to be something I do more often.

Last week I got two new cameras in the mail. A Pentax K1000 and the new Instax Mini 8. I'm so excited to play around with both of them. I'll definitely be sharing lots of photos soon, as well as a full review of the instax mini 8 and whether or not I think it's worth upgrading from the 7s. While getting a new instant camera is fun I'm really most excited about the pentax. My current 35mm camera, the Canon T2, is really just doing everything for me. I simply line up the shot and make sure it's in focus. This year I want to really learn film. I want the pictures I take to be all my doing, and not the result of technology.

I'm still fighting off this cold. Luckily I think it's finally coming to an end. I've used more tissues this last week than I probably have in the last five years (if not longer) and I've gone through two full bags of cough drops. So gross. I am beyond ready to be healthy again!

This lengthy cold plus it getting dark so early in the evenings has lead to me taking many many bubble baths lately. It's helping me get lots of reading done plus I LOVE bubble baths! This bubble bath is currently my favorite (when I'm not using Lush), it smells so lovely.

Speaking of Lush, I got my first online order ever! I tried to order a variety of things since I already had some bath bombs left from Christmas. I tried their toothy tabs which are definitely different. It's weird to try to get used to a flavor that isn't minty but these really do make my teeth feel clean and I love the way they taste. I already told you what I thought about Lemony Flutter here and the deodorant I'm still on the fence about. It definitely smells great but using a powder deodorant is totally new to me.

So, I am in the final few months of having braces! At my last appointment, which was last Monday, the orthodontist said he was really happy with my progress and that at my February appointment we would discuss retainers and make an appointment to get my braces off for the next month. I'm so incredibly excited. These last two years with them flew by. I'm trying really hard not to make a countdown just in case he changes his mind and decides we should wait a little while longer but it's hard!

And lastly, I've been scanning lots of pictures! I spent nearly all of Thursday morning scanning and labeling photos that I got back the day before. I'm starting to think maybe setting a goal of shooting 30 rolls of film in 2013 wasn't quite high enough. Hah!

Hope you all have a great Monday!
xoxo

  1. Do you have a recipe for the sugar cookies? :) I'm dying to bake some... though to be fair I'm so impatient, I can't really work cookie dough. They stick to everything, no matter how well I dust the surface and the rolling pin. :D

    1. I found the recipe here:
      http://www.yummymummykitchen.com/2012/12/the-best-sugar-cookies-shhhh-theyre.html

I think the key is to under bake them a little. I only left mine in the oven for five minutes.

I didn't have any problems with them being sticky at all! The dough was a dream to work with!

  3. I've been thinking about getting a Pentax K1000! Last weekend, I got a Ricoh XR7 with three lenses for free, but when I went to load film into it the shutter stuck, which turns out in this case isn't fixable. Long story short, I need an slr for kmount lenses and it seems that that is a good one!

Speaking of film cameras, are you still planning on doing a post on tips for SplitCams? I'm almost done with my first roll of film, but the film rewinder rarely turns when I advance the film, and I hear that's bad news. :/

Holy long comment, hope you have a great day!

  7. That's great news about your braces! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you:) And I love those teeth cookies! They seem like the perfect things to celebrate with.

And I wish lush sold that coconut deodorant here too. It sounds divine!

  8. So many exciting new things right now, I hope you really are feeling better soon. If you don't already have it I would recommend Henry Horenstein's "Black and White Photography" if you want to get into developing and printing your own stuff. It's so much fun. I"m actually in the process of making my own darkroom right now. I got the enlarger for 12 bucks! I've found a lot of cheap stuff on Craigslist. Hopefully it'll be up and running by the end of this week. Ok I'll stop geeking out now.

  9. i've worn braces for a long long time, and everytime they said "uhhm, sorry honey, but you have to wear them a little longer.." and i cried and cried.. i had a gap between my front teeth, i thought when, i was 10, that it would be no big deal but later when i was 17 i was sick of my braces. but my mom literally drove me into the toothclinic. and now, i'm so proud and happy because my teeth look really good and i would make it again, because it looks so good. in primary school they used to call me "stone henge" ._.

  10. You've successfully pointed out something major I have been missing in my life: bubble baths. Candle lit, always preferred! Glad to hear you're taking it easy and enjoying yourself as much as you can as you slowly recover! colds are the worst!!

By the way, I posted some cemetery pictures this morning that I took, and I thought you'd be interested in them! They're not nearly so gritty (and I say that lovingly) as your film shots, I'd say. But rather lovely none the less!

  14. I've read that people use baking powder as a deodorant, but it just seemed so messy to me. Then I found a recipe that mixes it with cornstarch and coconut oil so it's easier to apply. It's the best deodorant I've ever used.

Those cookies look so good, but my boyfriend is trying to lose weight, so I'm not allowed to bake cookies :(

  15. That book sounds very interesting! I tried making my own powder deodorant a while back, but it was just kind of a pain to carry around (crashing on couches at the time) and I had a problem with it always clumping up. I'll stick to my Tom's. :)

I think braces actually look really nice on you so I'm anxious to see you without them... and I mean that in the best possible way! Haha.

Haha, I feel the same way. I'm so nervous because I've completely gotten used to the way I look with them. I have no idea what I'm going to look like with a mouth full of straight teeth!!

  17. Lady. You are speaking my heart with that Pentax. That was my very first film camera, and how I learned everything I know about the ins and outs of film photography. I still have it, but haven't used it in so long. There's something magical about looking through that view finder and finding the perfect focus. I hope you love it as much as I did. This post inspired me! Thanks!

  21. Have you tried using a Canon AE-1 to shoot 35mm film on? It's a great old manual camera, and you get really fantastic shots out of it!

Also, I'm obsessed with Lush as well. I have a giant plastic bin in my bathroom full of bath bombs!

  23. I know the feeling! A few of my childhood memories are on... dentist! I don't have afraid, and I like them. But just when I think on doing something on dentist, I get bored. I had braces about 2 years and a half. Then I use one about 6 months during night, and it was over :)

Your cats looks so funny and concentrate on that little bird on your window. Poor bird, he doens't know they are hungry for him.

  25. Yay! That's great, I bet you can't wait for the next appointment! I would love to get braces. My dentist kept putting it off because my wisdom teeth wouldn't come through and she didn't want to pull them. Now I'm 27 and HATE my teeth. Think I might have to look into how much it costs now I'm living in the US, and start saving my pennies!

    1. Sarah, definitely look into getting braces. It was seriously one of the best decisions I have ever made. I hated my teeth and felt so uncomfortable smiling before but they've changed my life. You're never too old to get braces and they're really worth every penny!

  26. Those cookies look too yummy! (I love the tooth shape, I have got to buy some of those cookie cutters! I forget how fun those can be). And yay for new cameras! I'm getting one soon and can't wait to play with it -- it'll be my first "old school" film camera.

And CONGRATS on pretty-much-getting-your-braces-off! I remember how excited I was to get mine off. I even bought a pack of gum a year in advance to keep until the big day :)

    2. awesome, thanks! also, i had braces and getting them off is the weirdest feeling ever! your teeth will feel SO smooth. like, you can't even believe how smooth they feel. you forget how you looked before your braces, but it's definitely new to smile and not have metal all over your teeth. it makes them seem really white!
