frozen sand dunes - The Dainty Squid

frozen sand dunes

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

In the past I've mentioned my love of the beach in all seasons (probably a million times)! I've even blogged photos of my local beach in the winter before but it didn't quite look like this. Last week I took a trip over to the beach to see what it looked like and by golly, it was gorgeous. The wind had formed a bunch of large frozen sand dunes. These photos really don't even begin to do them justice since there really isn't a great scale to show just how large the really were. But believe me, they were huge and just frozen solid.
I even found some beach glass. It took a little bit of digging to get it out since it was frozen into the sand. But how awesome is that?
As neat as the beach is this time of the year I really am looking forward to a hot and sunny day to go splash around in the water. It's been too long!

On a slightly unrelated note - Guess what! Last night I drove to the beach from the park and then home from the beach. That was my first time on the road driving and I think I did pretty stinking awesome. It felt so natural, after the initial shock of "hooooly cow, there are cars coming my way!" wore off. Ha! I'm so excited to drive around more. I still, obviously, have a lot to learn but I feel really great about this. Why did I wait so long to start learning to drive!?!!

Hope you're having a great week!
xoxo

PS. For reference of what my beach normally looks like here are some posts with photos : winter before the snow , & summer.

  3. I love beaches in the winter. They are so pretty.

I waited until my twenties to learn to drive, and regret that wait so much! Driving is so freeing, and really not that scary once you get a couple of months under your belt!

  17. Yeah, it totally looks like the moon. A place I bet you'd love to visit is Iceland -- they have lots of "surface of the moon" landscapes there. It's a very magical country. :)

  27. Beautiful pictures!! I am amazed that this kind of thing can happen naturally. Very cool.
I was wondering though, in the picture above the sea glass in your hand picture, what is that thing far off in the distance? It almost looks like a flame torch or something!

  30. Oh my, that looks breath takingly beautiful but eerie at the same time. Love it and am somewhat jealous the winters you guys get there. I clearly live in the wrong hemisphere, here is Australia we could only dream of experiencing and seeing something like that! I love snow and winter (call me weird especially for someone that also happens to reside in Australia's driest and hottest state) so it brings a smile when I see photos like this of other parts of the world and how vastly different our climates can be!

  31. Wow, this post tell me "you need to go to see the sea" ...wonder!

  32. Those are so cool! And you're totally right about there not being a big enough scale to see all of the greatness that nature created (that's pretty much what I struggle with all the time).

And too cool that you still found beach glass!!

  33. Oh my gosh, first I absolutely love these pictures and second...I am SO nervous to drive on a road, still haven't done it yet other than in my neighborhood a couple of times and parked cars and cars coming my way scared the crap out of me! How do you just zone in to pay attention to what you're doing and not freak out?? haha I clearly need help here..

I'm probably going to be a late driver. I get way too paranoid about cars being near me haha.
