2013 Goals!

Tuesday, January 01, 2013

♥ License - for real this year! It's been on my list for three years running but every year I chicken out. I feel like this is actually going to be the year I finally get my license though.  Right now I'm pretty dead set on doing it.

♥ Continue to purge possessions. I've been on a roll lately getting rid of things and it feels awesome! I've donated so many clothes I no longer wear, books I don't read and knick knacks I no longer absolutely adore. It's super exciting! I feel lighter! I want to continue this in 2013.

♥ Read 30 books. I'm excited to dive into this goal for sure! In 2012 I read 35 books so 30 is definitely attainable for me. Santa Claus even brought me a ton of books for Christmas, I've nearly got all of my 30 on the bookshelf already.

♥ Photo an hour once a month. I did this last year and definitely want to do it again.

♥Save money monthly. This should really just be a life long goal of mine. I love having money tucked away that I add to on a regular basis.

♥Do the splits / work on flexibility. I want to be flexible, like really flexible. I'm pretty close to the splits right now (both right and left, not middle) so I just need to keep at them. I have a nice little list of other tricks I'd like to work on although I'm not sure how feasible they really are in a year. I want to practice as often as possible. This is something I've always been interested in and I'm all hyped up that this is the year I finally work on these things.

♥Identify five new mushrooms. I'm still super passionate about mycology and want to continue to learn about mushrooms. This year I want to be able to identify five more mushrooms.

♥See more live music! In 2012 I realized how much I loved seeing live music. Why did it take this long!? This year I have got to see more!

♥Spend more time outside. In the winter I realized just how much I take for granted in the summer. I love being outside. It makes me feel good. Even after just ever so briefly stepping outside I feel so refreshed. I need to be outside more! Although, this goal isn't just limited to nice weather. I certainly own boots, gloves, a hat and a warm jacket so I have no excuse not to get outside in the snow as well!

♥Learn to crochet. I've wanted to learn to crochet for a while now but I always give up after messing around with it for a bit. This year I will learn!

♥Venture outside blue / purple hair. Things that are rarely said "Boy, my blue hair is kind of boring." But this is something I've been thinking for a while. I feel super comfortable in blue and purple hair. It's basically become my natural color (now if only it would grow in like this!). A few years back I dyed my hair all sorts of colors and I really miss it. I've definitely got a few colors in mind that I need to try out again this year.

♥Shoot 30 rolls of film. Gotta keep up the film shootin' momentum!

♥Find a home for Lloyd. This is a tough goal for me. It was confirmed by a neighbor a few months back that Lloyd is a stray, not just someone's outdoor cat. I absolutely adore that guy and really do consider him part of my brood of kitties but when it comes right down to it he deserves more. He deserves to be an inside kitty who gets to snuggle up with someone at night and get way more love than I can offer him. He's truly one of the sweetest kitties I've ever met! (If you're anywhere nearby Cleveland, OH or Erie, PA I'd be tickled pink if he could find a forever home with a blog reader! Email me if you're interested at all!)

♥Continue to build an awesome bug collection. In 2013 I'd like to continue to learn more about insects and work on having a really gnarly collection of them.

♥Start taking daily walks. This probably sounds kind of silly but I have a secret, I feel stupid taking walks around my neighborhood. I'm so nervous that people are going to be "what is she doing?!" but I know it's not weird at all to take daily walks around the block. I see a few of my neighbors doing it every morning and I've never thought anything about it! 2013 starts a new phase for me where I stop worrying about ridiculous crap and just walk around the dang block!

Here's to an awesome new year!
xoxo!

  8. Nice goal list. The "splits" one made me laugh. I actually used to be a gymnast and it was absolutely nothing to just fall into a split and twist and contort into all sorts of positions..that was quite a long time ago tho. It really would be quite cool to be able to do it again. Good luck with your list! I posted mine up today as well.

  9. I used to be terrified of my neighbors seeing me walking around back when I lived in the suburbs in high school. Now that I live in the city it makes a big difference. So many people all the time that it doesn't even cross my mind anymore. Jogging outside is a whole different story though!

Also, I'm hoping to get my license this year too! Seems kind of weird to most people at 28, but somehow I've never really needed to drive!

  10. I always love reading your lists! It' can't be said that many people aspire to build on their bug collection, or identify more mushrooms! It's nice to see such refreshing individuality. I'm also tres jealous, I'm useless at resolutions, mine this year was to not make any!

I hope you've had a gorgeous new year, and I look forward to reading more of your adventures in 2013!

    Lots of love, Lauren. xox

  12. Great goals! We have some similar ones. Good luck with the crochet learning. If you need any help I could help you. I've been crocheting for a few years. You should totes check out the curiouspug blog. She hosts a monthly crochet along. Might be a good motivator!

  13. These are some great goals! We've got some similar goals- I'm also planning to shoot lots of film after finally getting a film camera for Christmas.

My major resolution is to finally get driving. I assume that's what you mean by license. Good luck to both of us!

  14. I totally understand the fear of taking walks around your neighborhood! I moved to a new area in august, and I am still afraid to walk around outside (not because it's dangerous or anything, just because I feel uncomfortable). I used to go outside way more often when I lived at home... and I want to start doing that again now that I am in my new home.

  15. I couldn't agree with you more on the spending more time outdoors goal! We've had so much rain in the UK and have taken shelter indoors it makes me hanker to be out in the fresh air even if it does mean wellies and raincoats! Good luck with your goals and Happy New Year!

  22. Great goals~! Our first two are the same (haha). You could also learn how to crochet via youtube videos if you haven't already tried. Some of the videos are really good depending on what you want to make. I'll be working on my yearly list as well, though I've already started the purging and organization process. Good luck on your goals, I hope you accomplish all that you set out to do! :)

  30. Really great goal list, and I have to say I feel the same way about just taking a stroll around the block! I feel like it's so ridiculous that I really care what anyone else thinks, especially about something like that. But, I'm happy to know I'm no the only one.

    Happy New Year. :]

  34. Crochet is rad <3 One of my "25 before 25" was to take it up again and I'm so glad I did! It's super relaxing :)

Also, as for flexibility, I have one word for you, YOGA. It is fantastic for flexibility! Just work slowly, as pushing your body too far actually sends you backwards in the flexible stakes, not forwards (I'm sure you already know that, though ;) ).

  35. Good goals, Kaylah. I'll tell you a secret---I didn't get my license until I was 32. Then, my first car was a stick shift and I had to drive it home from where I got it, having never driven a stick before! Now I could probably drive a semi, haha!
Also, daily walks are a good way to make blog posts---I started one called "What I Saw on My Walk"---now I just have to stick to it!
Happy New Year and good luck :)

  36. I really hope to see more live music in 2013 too. When I was younger, I was seeing shows all the time and I went to Warped Tour every year. A few years went by without really seeing any live music & then last year I finally went to my first music festival, Bonnaroo in TN, and it was an eye opening, life changing experience! I want to try to do that this year and see if live music even *exists* in the area in which I live!

  37. This is a great list! On a selfish note, I can't wait to see a lot of this progress show up on the blog! You're one of the few people I know that boths makes and sticks with their resolutions, so please keep us updated! :] -Z

  38. What a wonderful list! You have given me some good ideas to add to my already-made list : ]

The splits take awhile to achieve, and when that was a goal of mine (way back when) it was only ever super closely attained, but never perfectly. I just recommend stretching the splits a few times a day, and don't be afraid to push yourself!

And! I still don't like walking around the neighborhood...I have recently started taking walks for health/fitness reasons, but can only muster up the courage to walk at night--not so bad in the summer, but in the winter it's frikken cold! Hopefully I'll get over this and be able to walk when the sun is out... We'll see I guess haha.

    Good luck on everything!

  40. I do the same thing in your "take daily walks" paragraph! In the last apartment I lived in, I had on sneakers and "running" clothes to jog around the complex but when I got to the bottom of my stairs I just turned around and went right back up! I have a difficult time doing things in public by myself where I don't have something to concentrate on (like shopping). Let me know if you come up with any tips!

    Happy New Year!

    1. Hello Jess, Happy New Year! Part of my list too is to continue my running habits - a bit more or often. In our hometown where I usually run, it's a bit hard to go out in the public and do things like this - maybe for me. But lately, when I'm with my iPod and the best music in pumped up volume, I care less a lot. Hehe. :)

  41. Awesome! I wish you the best for yr goals, girl.

As far as flexibility goes, how are you planning on working on yours? I have the same goal and I've been doing yoga recently. I've never been able to touch my toes but after a few days of yoga routines, I could. I'm stoked.

  42. These are some great goals :) I need to start donating things I've been meaning to donate for months (it's a bit embarrassing how long some stuff has been sitting around in bags, waiting to be donated - I'm a little nervous about going to Goodwill to drop stuff off, hah). I really need to start taking daily walks, too... but there's that silly worry about what will people think, I always feel a little awkward, haha.

    Happy New Year!

  43. Your goals for this year sound really good and I can share those that include more live music, spending more time outside (mine would actually be added "in the woods", my fobia of insects kind of limits me hanging in the woods in the summertime), reading more books and getting rid of stuff. Also working on flexibility is something I need to do.
And I really, truly wish that Lloyd would get that dream home. I´m sure he will.
And what comes to seeing live shows, I just had a weird experience; I went to town to see if the sales have anything to offer, and wandering mindlessly around malls and warehouses in a sales-crazy crowd gave me sort of the same feeling as going to gigs? Like being lost in a crowd where everybody is totally emerged in their own experience, focused on the show and couldn´t care less about anyone else. Well, that reminded me that I really miss going to gigs and totally need to do that more often.

  44. my solution for taking random walks without fear of judgement (well, i have a dog, but aside from that) take your camera! i like to walk around my neighborhood with my digital, because you never know what you'll discover. :)

I failed the driving test the first time I took it, so don't sweat it if you need a couple of tries!

  49. Love your list! I'm studying abroad in Italy this year so my goal is to travel as much as possible! But I can relate to your flexibility goal. My whole life I've never been able to touch my toes! I'm not fat or anything, I'm skinny but just not flexible! You've inspired me to add that to my list, hehe ;) Not quite a split but it would be nice to touch my toes without bending my knees! x

  51. so glad you have a photography goal on here! i love your film ones so i can't wait to see what you share this year. and don't over think the license one. i just got mine a few months ago (mid twenties over here!) and it was not as huge of a deal as i had worked it up to be in my head— i'm so glad i was finally able to cross it off. good luck with your goals and happy new year, kaylah!

  52. As someone who takes pretty much daily walks (today I had 3 cameras with me!) in Los Angeles, I still get some kinda weird/curious looks and comments sometimes, but it's so worthwhile! There's so many different and interesting things to see and sometimes people will even take a moment to enjoy something you point out to them they wouldn't notice otherwise, which I really enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I love your goals. I have some similar goals on my list. For instance I want to start taking walks again around my neighborhood or just going for a little hike up in the woods. It's very peaceful, but I just can't seem to do it anymore. I have gotten very lazy :/ I hope you get to find a very nice home for Lloyd and I also hope you get to accomplish all these things. I love love love the list. Happy New year and many blessings.

  54. I just want to give you some positive vibes on the "walking around your neighborhood" goal. It does feel weird at first, especially in a neighborhood when there's nothing to walk TO (like mine - no stores, no cafes, nothing), but no in the neighborhood has ever looked at me strangely. Go for it!

    Happy New Year!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I totally understand the license thing, it took me almost 4 years after I took my driving class to get my license. I'm definitely glad I did though. I like this list, especially the reading, walking around the block, going outdoors more, and purging. As for learning how to crochet, I learned how to knit using Youtube. Maybe you could do the same!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Great goals, I feel inspired to write my own list for 2013. I definitely want to read more this year, as I used to love reading and need to make much more time for it. Happy New Year! :)

  57. I've been following your stuff for awhile now. I first found you on Flickr and I was like "Whoa, this girl is amazing!" Though not until tonight did I read a blog post in which you stated that you had anxiety. I don't know if this is weird of me to say or not.. But I have had anxiety since I can remember! And it wasn't until this year that I became open enough to talk about it. Anyways, it really inspired me to know someone that I truly admire shares that with me because it has been a huge part of my life.

I too haven't gotten my license yet. Along with a few things I've put off for years because of fear. Though I know this is a good year with so much potential! You aren't alone, and it helps to know I'm not either.

Good luck this year! I believe in you ! :)
