December 2012 - The Dainty Squid

This year I...

Monday, December 31, 2012

For the last two years I've done a little recap of the things I did that year and I'm going to keep that little tradition going for as long as possible. They're really fun to look back at even if not much has really changed at all.
This year I...
dyed my hair a bunch of pretty colors!
made friends with a bunch of stray cats including Carl, Lloyd and Cornelius.
found a new favorite city, Chicago!
met all kinds of neat critters.
spent lots of time at the beach, both playing in the water and collecting treasures!
 baked lots of tasty treats.
spent a silly amount of time jumping around
(see the GIF version of my whole family jumping here)
became a big sister to a little puppy who quickly became a giant dog (that 100% stole my heart)!
fell back in love with film!
2012 was a pretty good year if I do say so! You can find other "This year I..." posts here : 2010 & 2011.

I'll be spending my new years eve at home (as always!) playing video games and drinking the tastiest rootbeer. I might even spend some time in the bathtub with a book and some of new lush goodies Santa brought me! Sounds like a pretty nice way to bring in the new year if I do say so myself.

A few of my favorite posts for 2012 // part 1

Saturday, December 29, 2012

I've kind of been going overboard these last few days working on end of the year recap posts. I had a ton of fun going through all of 2012's posts. There were so many little things I had forgotten about, pictures of things I'd probably otherwise have no memory of and great reminders of what a great year it's been. I'm so happy I've documented it all.

I've broken my giant 2012 recap down into five posts the first of which is this one. These are a few of my favorite personal posts from this year...
A not quite frozen Lake Erie

Hope you're having a great weekend!

what i wore

what I wore : brown & green!

hat - thrifted
shirt - thrifted
belt - thrifted
skirt - thrifted
tights - Achilles' Zeal c/o Modcloth
shoes - c/o Wanted Shoes (last year)
camera bag - Jo Totes

I am so in love with this skirt. It looks like a regular skirt, I know! But I've been going through all my clothes recently and reevaluating why I'm keeping them. I'm trying to get rid of lots of things I don't wear, things I don't absolutely love, etc. I had so many skirts that were adorable but I just didn't like the way they fit, or the length or the fact they wrinkled quickly. Those all took a trip to Goodwill. Now I'm trying to fill their space better clothes, things I'll wear more often and things that will last. This newly thrifted skirt fits that criteria. It was love at first sight when I spotted it last weekend. I normally always try on thrift store finds before bringing them home but this had a tag on the outside with the measurements and appropriately enough it was exactly my size. Totally worth five dollars!

Hope you're having a great Thursday!

2012 Goal Recap - Books - Part 4

Wednesday, December 26, 2012

Here is the final update on what I've been reading this year! I am super proud to say I surpassed my goal of reading 15 new to me books. I actually read 35! Like I said in my last update I never thought I'd read this many in a year. Forcing myself to read was the best, I realized I wasn't as picky as I thought and that I really just needed to find a niche. I'm so thankful for amazon's suggestions, they are almost always spot on.
I've only read five more books since my last update in early November but I guess that's not really bad at all. 35 books in 12 months is just around 2.9 books per month so this is about right even though I didn't set aside much time to read the last two months.
Since early November I've read...
The Price by Natalie McLennan.
Whore Stories by Tyler Stoddard Smith.
Sinner Takes All by Tera Patrick.
The Poisoner's Handbook by Deborah Blum.
The Contortionist's Handbook by Craig Clevenger.

My favorite from this small group was The Contortionist's Handbook which I actually found by accident while looking for an actual book on contorting. (I want to learn so bad!) After seeing it was actually a novel I was pretty bummed until I saw that my all time favorite author, Chuck Palahniuk, said "I swear to God this is the best book I have read in easily five years. Easily. Maybe ten years." about the book. So I bought it. It sat in my to read pile for a while until I started running low on books I was super stoked to tear into to. Finally mid November I started reading it and oh my gosh, all I can say is - why did I wait so long?! It was SO good. Craig Clevenger immediately won over a new fan. I loved his style of writing. The story was great, I was instantly enthralled. It was the kind of book I found really hard to put down. He apparently has only written one other book, Dermaphoria, which I put it on my wishlist as soon as I finished The Contortionist's Handbook. Why do all these great authors with books that are AMAZING only write one or two books?! I'm looking at you Katherine Dunn!

The others were okay, nothing to write home about. The Poisoner's Handbook started off really strong but I often found myself bored and trying to just get through it. I want so badly to say I loved it since it really was packed with interesting facts and information but when it really comes down to it I probably wouldn't re-read it.
The other 30 books I read this year can be found in these posts - Part One, Part Two, Part Three. My top seven from this year are...  drum roll, please..
The Dead Janitors Club by Jeff Klima .
The Contortionist's Handbook by Craig Clevenger.
Curtains by Tom Jokinen.
Bonk by Mary Roach.
Stiff by Mary Roach.
Packing For Mars by Mary Roach.
Spook by Mary Roach.

I'll definitely be making another reading goal for 2013. I want to keep up this momentum, find more authors to love and more subjects to dive into.

Life Lately

Monday, December 24, 2012

1 // I got new kitty shoes! I already had a brown pair but these ones have little ears and it makes all the difference. I'm smitten!
2 // My bug collection is growing. Everything I currently have is dry and ready to be put in a shadow box (pretty sure Santa Claus has one under the tree for me!). I'm having so much fun identifying everything.
3 // I recently hung this old wedding photo I've been hanging on to in my craft room beside my computer. My dad saved it and three others from the same set from being thrown away and gave them to me. I just don't understand who could get rid of something so special. Isn't it such a wonderful photo?
4 & 5 // Still collecting beach glass! Off season at the beach is so much more fun than summer time.
6 & 7 // A peek at the new couch and Leaf enjoying it. I'm so excited to see how the couch looks in the living room when all the Christmas decor isn't up. It feels a little too crowded for my tastes with the tree up.
8 // A freshly cleaned rat skull. I'm becoming quiet efficient at the process of cleaning skulls. This is the first small skull that I've cleaned from start to finish and been 100% happy with. Some of the others I've done I've accidentally damaged because small skulls are just so fragile but this guy turned out perfect. I'm so proud.
9 // I got the most amazing box of tooth goodies for my collection from an awesome blog reader (Thank you SO much Irene!)
10 // I've been planning some posts for the new year. Starting to use a brand new planner is so satisfying.
11 // More earthstars! While taking outfit pictures at the park I remembered this was the around the same time that I found those earthstars last year so I sprinted over to where they were and sure enough there were some!

Hope you all have a fantastic Christmas eve! I'm off to finish getting ready, spend some time with family and eat lots of tasty food.
