Shedd Aquarium - Part One - The Dainty Squid

Shedd Aquarium - Part One

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

While we were in Chicago we visited Shedd Aquarium. It is easily the best aquarium I have ever been to! Previously the title of "Kaylah's favorite aquarium" was held by the Seattle Aquarium, which blew all the others I had been to out of the water (Cleveland has the worst one ever, such a disappointment!) But Shedd Aquarium rose above all my expectations. It was huge, they had an awesome variety and this isn't normally a determining factor, but holy cow, their cafeteria was pretty sweet! We were able to get a window seat and look out at the lake while we ate, it was wonderful. We could have easily spent all day in there!
Those were some of my favorite critters. How adorable is that turtle eating grapes?! And the stingray smiling? I could just melt!

I actually have a second post about the aquarium coming soon. Literally half of the photos I took in Chicago were from the aquarium's main exhibit, jellyfish! I had so many photos that I loved of the jellyfish I couldn't fit them into this post so I'll be sharing those soon!

  2. I love aquariums! I have my own small tank, with some cool fish, but would love it if I could have weedy sea dragons or jellyfish!

  5. I love all of these photos so much! Sea creatures are one of my biggest loves in life. It's probably because I grew up on a Florida beach, or that I used to volunteer at the Aquarium, but I love them so much! I have a cuttlefish on my forearm with plans for a full oceanic sleeve to match in the future.

Such great photos! I can't wait to see the jellyfish post. I have a particular love for their grace, though I am usually only willing to admire them from afar. They can be kind of scary if you think about it - eek!

I am hoping to go to the Atlanta Aquarium sometime soon - they have whale sharks!

  7. I would love to know some of the settings you shot these photos with (or possibly a trick you did post processing?)! They are so beautiful! I have the hardest time with indoor photos, without using flash, and having them come out SO noisy! But yours seem so beautiful and crisp! Was the lighting from the aquariums just enough?

Sorry for so many questions haha! Can't wait for part 2!

    1. The lighting in most of the tanks was just awesome. I had a bunch of blah pictures from the darker tanks but really most of what they had there had really great lighting.

  8. Pretty dang awesome! You should go swimming with the stingrays in Florida before you die! :) They are huge stingrays and you get in the water with them and feed them and it's brilliant! It's so fun, you would love it!

  10. Awesome photos - if you ever get to Monterey, California I think their aquarium is even better than the Shedd. Sucks about Cleveland's, though, I had wanted to go until I heard all of the negative reviews ;(

  11. I have a little love of scuba, an annoyingly expensive hobbie. So when I can't afford to dive or it's too cold (in the UK) I bumble around our sealife centre. It's so lovely to see how many other people do too! For a while I was worrying, I might be a wierd fish girl :) Great photos lovely. xxx Lizz

  12. yay! We just went last Friday and I just uploaded a video I made of the Jelly exhibit.

We tried to go to the Shedd the week between Christmas and New Year's only to find it was a 2 hour wait, outside, in the freezing rain, so we left. So glad they extended the exhibit! I could have stayed in there all day. For those that might be going, the tip is to go see the jellies while the water show is on. The crowds get insane immediately after the show and the tanks are all relatively small, so it is hard to get a good view with lots of people in there.
Also, that jellyfish tank from kickstarter is looking better and better everyday!

  13. If you ever get the chance, you definitely need to check out the National Aquarium in Baltimore. It's amazing. And it has a rainforest (complete with sloth) on the top floor!

  21. The Shedd is awesome, but if you're ever on the West coast again and find yourself in Monterrey, hit up the Monterrey Bay Aquarium. They have a giant room with a cylinder like jellyfish tank that goes up to the ceiling! There are stairs that go up around it too. It's amazing.

  27. It's so cool seeing Shedd Aquarium from your point of view. I've been there many times since it's such a short drive away, but it's always interesting.

I'm a bit jealous on how beautiful your photos turned out, most of mine were horribly blurry.

    :D Have a nice day.

  28. awwww that is the cutest little sting ray!!!

if you are ever in central/northern california you should visit the monterey bay aquarium! its seriously one of the best in the country~ they've got a jelly exibit going on now too! but my favorite part of the monterey bay aquarium is the area where they have all the sea life you can touch. its mostly just starfish and that sorta thing, but the part that i love about it is that they have a pool of bat rays!!! bat rays are my favorite sea creatures so i spend a good chunk of time there petting them. :3
