A new friend...

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

We've got a new friend! I've kind of become the neighborhood cat lady. After beginning to feed a stray back in January word (errrr, meow) of mouth spread and we're now feeding and watering quite a few kitties. Some aren't so friendly, others are afraid but there are a couple who are just the sweetest. First there was Carl, then Lloyd (both of which still hang around) and now we've got this guy. Kevin has named him Cornelius, I'm not sold on the name but I guess if I got to name the other two it's probably his turn to name one now. Regardless of what his name is I am crazy about this boy.
He's SO sweet. The first time I saw him snacking I snuck out the patio door and went to sit by him. He dashed away but after sweet talking him for a few minutes and a few tiny meows at me he waltzed over to me like we were old friends and flopped down to get pet.

He has the best little meow and loves to have his head scratched, as you can probably tell from the photo below! Hah! I'm super stoked to have another kitty like Lloyd and Carl who enjoy spending time with me while I water my plants and read on the deck. Plus look at that little nose, how can anyone resist?!
I hope he becomes a regular. It's only been around a week since we've met Cornelius but he's been back each day and is becoming a little more outgoing everytime.

Hope you're having a great day!
xoxo

  7. *squee* He looks so adorable! <3 It's looks like he says: "owwwh that feels sooooo good" in the last picture. I've got two neighbour kitties around our house. One of them, the ginger one thinks that our garden belongs to him hehe. He's such a cutie and always in for a cuddle. <3 I feel quite lucky that my neighbours have cats around our house, because I don't own one (yet).. My dad doesn't like cats, so that's why.. How can somebody NOT like cats?!

  8. I had 4 strays (w/ a potential 5) that I fed and loved. I just moved a week ago and it was super tough knowing I was leaving all my cats. I'm actually goiong back to visit+feed them tomorrow since I only moved 10 blocks! Mine are Diana, Walter, Bruce, Sophia and Petunia.

  15. Aw, oh my goodness! He looks young, his ears are SO cute and remind me of my Fiona's ears when she was a kitten, too big for her head and so pointy. His sweet eyes in those first pictures are just so heart melting! I wish so much we could feed strays but my mom has two big dogs that wouldn't allow that, someday! Such a cutie!

  19. How cute! We recently adopted a feral kitten we found in our yard! He was starving when we found him and in need of love! Now, hes so spoiled! We can't help his big green eyes and playful personality. He is all black, we named him Shadow, because he literally came out of the shadows one night and meowed in the window, right where Tom and I were watching a movie, he was a smart boy. :) Now he gets served chicken thighs on only the finest China :)Yes, totally spoiled ;)

  20. I'm glad that you feed these stray kitties. Do you ever check your local newspaper or craigslist for lost pets. Not to say that these cats aren't just someone's indoor/outdoor pets, or were thrown out and living on their own. This summer our indoor cat Bishop escaped out of a broken screen window and was missing for 7 weeks. It was horrible. All the while we ran ads in the papers, posted missing cat posters and just pounded the pavement searching for him. It was hard to always stay positive and not let those fears creep in but people assured us that cats are very resilient animals. We were so thankful for the countless people that told us they left food and water our for stray cats. While we looked we found sooo many stray cats. I came to the conclusion that many people who's cats get lost search for a while but then give up and just assume that cat was taken in or died, but I really believe now that most of those cats are probably still out there and are afraid and lay low. The idea that cats can travel great distances and find their way back home is in fact rare, and not the standard. Our cat had been positively spotted twice, both times about a mile away (north and then west) and we're sure he just couldn't find his way back. We finally brought him home when a family had noticed him hanging out near their house for a couple of weeks. They had been feeding him and he began sleeping on their porch when they finally saw our ad in the paper. It took a few trips there before we finally found him and believe me when I say he was as happy to see us as we were to see him.

    1. Of course, I check both on a regular basis. I also always keep an eye out for LOST posters.

Glad you got your baby back! I couldn't imagine! I'm a nut about checking our screens and making sure the cats couldn't push them open. Summer is a stressful time in a house with four strictly indoor kitties.

  25. Have you seen this video? http://www.usatoday.com/video/index.htm?bctid=1642614173001

It is pretty interesting, the part I found most funny was about how cats often lead double life.

  28. Have you ever thought about helping to find these guys a new forever home? Both of my kitties were strays that I rescued, and last year I found another stray kitten, waited till she was old enough to be spayed and then found her a new home. In my town, I am able to have a cat fixed for around $30 though and I know not all cities have such programs.

  34. awe sooo cute!!!
We have a cat that has positively declared our front and backyard her territory! She belongs to someone down the street but has been hanging out with us on a daily basis, she'll run away from most people but always follows me everywhere and lays on her back on top of my feet if I dare stand still :) I don't know her actual name but she's my little Lula (Talulah) when I say it's her territory that's because there have been many late night cat fights outside our bedroom window! I however don't ever feed her only because I know she does belong to someone and is obviously well taken care of.
If you want you can see her here: http://louise-amabilis.blogspot.com/2012/09/talulah.html

There have been some super sweet cats in my street as well. Have been petting them whenever I'm outside. They even come to sit on my lap!

  37. I used to have a kitty named Cornelius. We called him Corny for short, he was a great cat. It is so great that you feed the strays and they become family too.

  41. Aw! I love tuxedo cats! Three is my limit, but if I were to take in one more, I'd be looking for a cat just like him! I would name him Peabody. :)

  42. What a sweety!!! I hope when we have our own house again, we have neighborhood kitties too. Cats out where were moving from "disappear" if they go outside, because of the bigger hungrier animals like Fisher cats (my Libby disappeared that way). So we never saw other kitties. But the ones we have are super spoiled, and stay inside!

  45. He's adorable! He's got such a lovely little nose. We've just aquired a stray cat (We think it jumped on one of the big mail lorrys and it ended up at my mums work, we've been keeping an eye out to try and find it's owners but unfortunately they could be anywhere in England since the mail lorrys go everywhere).
It's so nice to have feline company again though. I love my dogs, but there's just something so comforting about having a purring cat around the house.
