Night Lights - The Dainty Squid

Night Lights

Something that's been on my list of things to try for quite some time is taking pictures at night with sparklers. While Elycia was out we finally tried our hand at it. I'm pretty stoked at how some of these turned out! I wish we had a never ending supply of them because we totally could have played for so much longer and never gotten bored.
It'd be really hard to choose a favorite but I am ridiculously impressed with the house and tree. We got that sucker on first try. Some of the others we had to do a couple times before it looked acceptable but when we ran over to the camera after the house and tree we both squealed with excitement.

Have you ever taken pictures of yourself or friends playing with sparklers at night? If not, you need to buy a pack and get outside tonight - it's a blast! I'm excited to do it again and see what I can do with a little more practice.

    1. You just turn the camera on bulb mode (which the "b" setting) and hold down the shutter while your friend twirls a sparkler. It's easy peasy! :)

  16. I love playing in the dark with an extra long shutter speed! You can do the same trick using flashlights in case you don't have sparklers on hand or easily accessible! It's a tradition of ours to do this at our annual family reunion now :)

I have a pack of sparklers sitting around waiting for the time to do this. I've done it before with my iphone as the light source, but sparklers are so much prettier!

  20. You guys are a riot - and super skilled sparkler twirlers (like I said on elycia's blog)... love the fun designs you guys thought up. When I did this in times past I only thought to write my name, draw a heart... and "boob"... not very clever on my part.

  31. Nice shots! You can try that effect with everything, that's light in a dark place.. like a campfire. Except that you stand behind it and form your stuff with the camera. It's also not as acurate as a sparkler, but it's an interesting effect. I've done the whole alphabet with that and it came out neat. :)
