Nail Polish Collection - The Dainty Squid

Nail Polish Collection

Wednesday, August 08, 2012

Like I mentioned earlier in the week, my nail polish collection kind of doubled recently. The last time I shared photos of my own little personal nail salon it all fit comfortably onto one rack but soon after it began to overflow. I finally gave in a couple of weeks ago and bought a second. And once again, I'm obsessed with how it looks!
I bought the same rack as last time so they'd look nice side by side, plus I really liked that one. I'm honestly surprised by how sturdy these silly, cheaply made plastic shelves are. One bottle of nail polish isn't heavy but once they start adding up they get heavy quick!

How do you store your pretty polishes? I definitely find myself using colors I used to ignore since I've had them all displayed. Plus, I absolutely love the way it looks!

  1. Gosh your collection looks beautiful! I love that you've arranged them in a sort of rainbow order! I'm super jealous, I think I may have to order some storage like yours ready for when I move house next month!

Also, I love the rest of the room - especially the chevron wall and those pink pompom things hanging from the ceiling! Do you have any more photos you could share..? (I'm so nosy, I love room tours!)

  2. Looks awesome! I am actually donating my entire nail polish collection (except one bottle or pink and one red) to Goodwill. A handful of Estee Lauder, OPI, Lancome, and Sephora. Would you want them? I'd be happy to mail them knowing you'd use them than risk Goodwill tossing them. :)

  3. wow, this is a crazy amount of nail polish, but they surely do look lovely altogether on the shelves. I have maybe 10% of the amount, so storage is not a problem for me.

  4. I love this! With so many nail polishes do you find they get old and sticky sometimes? Do you have any tips to prevent this?

Also, I caved and bought some nail stickers! I am so excited to try them out!

    1. Sticky like thick? Nail polish thinner fixes that right up, seriously, sometimes it makes it a better consistency then it originally was. :)

  5. This is so pretty, I think it's even prettier because it's something so ordinary, you know? I don't own enough nail polish to warrant doing much more than sticking it in my cabinet in the bathroom, since I can't keep nail polish on for much more than a couple hours (crafts person). My mum gave me a bottle of seche vite last year though and I swear by that stuff! Absolutely the best top coat!!

  6. I love that you have colour coded them in spectrum. That's how I order my clothes!

I don't wear nail varnish often but I still have loads of them. At the moment, they're just stored in a basket in my dressing room. I love this idea though.

  7. It looks great! Love the way you've organised it by colour. Is it a complete pain to clean though? My place gets dusty so quickly because I live in a city, so I can't display everything I'd like to - or all I'd ever do is clean! :(

    1. Ya know, I never thought about it, but it's kind of weird my nail polish is the one thing that never really seems to get dusty...?
I've really never noticed any dust on them.

Wonder if I might have a space for a pretty shelf like that :D

  16. Organizing things in rainbows/by colour is honestly the most most most fun ever!

I have very few colours of nailpolish, in part because I'm not allowed to wear nailpolish at work, but I keep them in a little vintage tin that was once a german music box :P

    1. Yes & no, it was originally a craft room packed to the brim with fabric. But now that I don't run a sewing business anymore it's got a few clothes racks and all my nail polish instead. I still work in there though, I have a desk and my imac in there.

  27. I love the color gradient that you have organized them by - I have really pared down my collection to a small basket that sits on my bathroom counter. I used to have boxes and boxes, but I find that I just don't have the time or patience anymore to switch my nail color often - so I will live vicariously through you :)

  29. wow, you have a huuuge collection of polish! You've got more than some nail salons ive seen!

  30. After reading your first post with the shelf, I ordered myself one...it is awsome! It's in my bathroom, and I have it organized by color as well. I love to look at it while I get ready for the day. My husband thought I was crazy at first, but I know he enjoys the tidyness of it ;)

  31. I. NEED. THIS. I developed an obsession with painting my nails in college and thus have amassed a ridiculous collection of my own. I always told my bf that when we build our first home, I need nail polish shelves in the bathroom.

  32. Well that's a LOT of nail polish! As pretty I think it might be, I rarely use it. A shame really, because I always like pretty polishes!

  33. Me = FILLED to the BRIM with nail polish envy! They look amazing on your wall. My sad little collection is hiding in a box in a dark cupboard, I probably have enough to fill ONE shelf, I might just have to invest in one!
    Ps. love your chevron wall!

  40. Looks great! Colour coördination is always a big winner in these racks. Makes them that much prettier!
I own a Helmer to store my 120-some polishes and they're organised by colour over three drawers, then one drawer for my nail-art stuff and one drawer for care (leaves me one drawer with random junk, ha!). I love that drawer unit so much!

  45. I'm so jealous of those racks, I def need some! My collection may be pretty close to yours as far as quantity goes!!!

I have some of my favorite colors in three vintage glass canisters on top of my dresser, organized in color categories. I like it but I don't love it, every time I open one I have take polishes out to get to ones on the bottom, and the scent of nail polish is wafted into my face, I don't want those canisters to smell of nail polish forever so I really should get some racks or shelves to display them!

  49. WOW. I've never met anyone who had owned that many nail polishes! That's a rather impressive collection of colors! You can open your own salon ;) I love white, nude and dark red shades the most - therefore I didn't need a rack so far. It all fits in a small box ;) Kathrin

  54. I just got this exact storage rack yesterday! Until then I had my polishes in clear plastic bags. I've almost filled it with all I had - NO idea that I had so many - and there is room for my stickers and files and enough space for a set of 12 random colors I ordered from hdgate.com last week. I used to go to nail salons but they used to get mildly annoyed at taking off my glitter (bit more trouble than regular) and I got tired of their conventional colors. I love the ebay sticker link you sent. I swear by Seche Vite too and Quimica Alemana Nail Hardener.

  55. That looks pretty neat! I hope I can display my 200+ someday like this! Right now as I still live with my parents I have them all stored in boxes (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S49871676/) on a closet...
I'd really love to have them as you do, so I could look at them always! So pretty all the colors together!

  57. Just read something interesting youtube. Apparently in order to get glitter off your nails easily, you soak a pad (not ball) in acetone, wrap tightly with foil and then wait 15 minutes and then pull the two off. Oh, I just tried it, works like a charm, who would have thought? Mine fell off a few times, I just put them back on and it worked out great. No more scrubbing off with 25 balls of cotton wool.

  59. After going crazy trying to manage my 200+ bottle collection (that doesn't include base coats, top coats, etc.) my husband went out and bought me a gigantic fishing tackle box with about seven different levels. It keeps me organized, but I do love what you have done with your collection, it gives your wall so much character!

  61. Ahh wow, I love nail polish. I get so lazy with it though, what with being a student young mum I don't get the chance to redo my polish frequently.
