Collecting at the beach... - The Dainty Squid

Collecting at the beach...

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

This summer I've discovered a new hobby to obsess over, looking for beach glass! A while back someone asked me if I knew of any beaches in the area where there was beach glass, I replied no that I've never seen any at any of my local beaches. Then while spending the day at the beach towards the beginning of summer I spotted some! Since then I've been hunting every time I go. I guess if you look hard enough there's always going to be something neat to be found right under your nose.

Last week we had one of the best days at the beach since I started look for beach glass. We found so much of it! My favorite pieces are the dark blue ones but I'm really quite pleased to find any regardless of size or color.

We also found oodles of feathers and two dead cicadas. Finding two lead me to believe there were probably more like last year when I found all those dead monarch butterflies but it was getting dark and I wasn't able to find any others before we left.

Do you collect beach glass? As soon as I build my collection a bit larger I'll definitely be photographing it. I'm pretty excited to lay it all out and sort it by color. (I love organizing things by color!!)

  3. These pictures make me want to go on a collecting adventure! I would often collect sea glass when I lived along Lake Superior, but that's the only place I'd ever find it. A friend of mine was collecting broken vintage plate pieces, sea glass and mirrors to arrange on the outside of an old concrete birdbath. When she finally got enough to cover it she glued them all down and grouted it; it's absolutely beautiful.

  5. I love beach glass, but sadly there's no place to find it where I live. Also, those shells totally remind me of cat fur. I dunno why.

  6. Oh, you're making me want to walk down to the beach and scour for some glass, I never knew you could find stuff like that so I've never looked! I have a collection of cobalt glass, so finding a piece of it would be so exciting!

  8. My Aunt collects beach glass! It was a hobby that her late husband introduced her to! They used to take long walks on the beach and look for it together, before he started to get really sick.
She still does it every time she goes, though, and says when she's having a good time of it, that Uncle Tom must be throwing them down for her. There's a huge jar of them sitting on her mantle.

  10. Lovely cicadas. I would be terrified if they were alive (WHY is that??) but getting right up close to them like that... they are so beautiful. You have inspired me to expand my insect collection- thanks!

and I adore the smokey green glass pieces. I know they were probably just beer bottles someone threw in the ocean... but look how beautiful they became! THAT'S a Cinderella story :D

  11. My boyfriend always picks up interesting pieces of beach glass or rocks or shells when we go out together. He also likes to pick me teeny tiny flowers, but knows I always lose them. I keep my rocks though, and constantly wonder why my bags are so heavy...cutest!

  24. I like to collect the glass too:) another thing I like to do is to organize the things I find, like you!

I visited one beach once with many different colored pebbles instead of sand. I made patterns with the colors sorting them in lines, swirls and pyramids. one of my favorite summers

  27. Yesss, beach glass! We just went to Glass Beach in Northern California and collected lots of it - it's ALL glass and almost no rocks or sand... I love the aquas & light greens most of all; the blues are very rare on that particular beach but I managed to find a couple of tiny blue pieces. Your pieces are gorgeous!

  33. I have like two jars! I've been collecting since I was like 15 [for 8 years LOL] and I don't usually go to the beach despite the fact that I live pretty close! But everytime I go is more likely to hunt for them than to get a sunbath!

  35. I would like to live near a beach... but I dont, I live in a big city, Montreal. But each year I put myself in a «Moonrise Kingdom» mode and go to the beach and forest to collect and explore. And definitely beach glass is pretty fun to collect and it's beautiful to put in any craft projects. I really like collecting big piece of woods that I work and structure into art or just to dream that it was up to a pirates boat, yeah I know, I'm kind of childish. I love your blog mainly because you put always thing that are link with nature/exploring/collecting. Even your dress are filled with bugs :D
