a new straybie! - The Dainty Squid

a new straybie!

Saturday, April 21, 2012

First of all, you're probably wondering if that's a typo in the title or not. It's not! I call the the outside cats who visit us my straybies - as in stray baby.

Back to the subject at hand - there's a new kitty who has been hanging around and this guy is making Carl fight for his place as my favorite straybie. We've named him Lloyd after Lloyd Christmas (you know, Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber!) because of that super fabulous little hair do he's got going on! This little guy is so so so precious. I am just smitten with his colors and of course, that black patch on his head.
He's been visiting us daily for about a week now. On his first time here (or rather - the first time I saw him here) he spent the evening and whole night right outside the patio door. It was so pitiful! He was peeking in the door, craning his little head so hard to see what we were doing. I hope he really does have a home and isn't a real stray because he sure doesn't seem cut out for it.

Hope you all are having a great Saturday. I'm just had some super rich chocolate cake for breakfast, that's always a great start to the weekend, right?
xoxo

  1. Oh, he's so cute!!! ♥.♥ We had a kitty who came around here ALL THE TIME and I named her Grey Lynn (as, when we adopted Wedge, his little old lady owned named him Grey Lee. *snicker* SO doesn't fit his pompous self!) Anyway... After a while, I realized she wasn't a stray, but our neighbors RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM US' kitty!

Her real name is simply "Kitty." I swear, she's grey, has golden eyes and is just SO sweet. And fiesty... She'll pure, nudge you, than bite you within a second. ;) I love her though!

Straybies... I gotta use that. I love taking care of the neighborhood "pets."

P.S. When I lived in Illinois, I had several! A kitty named "Kitty" who was all black, a dog named Willy who LOVED us, and many others! Including squirrels (Chipper was one!), raccoons, opossums, birds... Most of them had names, too!

  2. AHH. He's so cute. My aunt had a whole stray family of cats that she was caring for. They were all solid white. My parents ended up visiting and driving one of them across the country to his new furever home.

  4. At my parents house, we've had several stray cats and we took two in. Turned out - after living with us for a few months - that both lived a few houses away. One stayed after the family had moved. She had crossed the whole town about 3 times to get back. We returned her two times, then no longer bothered. So we kept her.

Don't your cats hiss when they first saw him?

    1. Nope, they're very interested in all the strays, but they never hiss.

  5. There is a cat that is sometimes at my bus stop. It's a white kitty and she is absolutely adorable. She rubs her face on my hand and if I stop petting her for even a few minutes she jumps on the fence or over it and rubs against my legs. She is so cute.
Loyd is so cute. His eyes are so cool.

  6. His hairdo is RAD. His eyes tell it all, he is too naive to be a stray! What a sweet little dude!

  7. Oh my gosh he's so cute, I will seriously cry if he's a stray. ):
It makes me so sad to see people abandoning animals like that, but I hope he's just a cat that wandered too far from home, like you said.
Very nice photos, by the way. Looks like he seems to really like the camera!

  8. if you're not sure if he's a stray, i wouldn't feed him. not fair to the owner. he looks very good and well groomed. he might have a loving home and just got out or wanted to take a nice stroll(-; Steffie

    1. I will never ever not feed a kitty who wants food, that's silly. If the owner doesn't want their cat fed they should keep them in their yard or better yet, bring them inside where it's safe.

Also, pictures can be quite deceiving because this guy isn't very clean at all. He's very greasy and dirty.

    2. My neighbors cats are so sad. They look starved and come to my house everyday for food. It makes me so sad that someone would have a pet and not care for it.

How excited are you for Dumb and Dumber 2?! Because I know I am! I really did not like dumb and dumberer. I think it brought a little tear to my eye when I heard Jim Carey and Jeff Daniels were filming a sequel.

  15. What a cutie, I love the first picture where he's sticking out his tongue! I used to have a little black stray kitten who would come into my flat whenever I left the patio doors open, sadly I've moved to a top floor flat now though so no more animal visitors!

  16. He is sooooo sweet. And cake for breakfast is always appropriate.

  17. Have you ever tried taking them in to see if they are microchipped? It's always possible that someone lost them some time ago, and they could still be looking. I don't think it costs anything to have them scanned.

  18. My weakness, black and white kitties... I have three of them. Hello Lloyd, I like you!

  19. That little hairdo! I swear, that's one of the prettiest kitties that I have ever seen.

I hope that he and Carl don't actually fight if they see each other. We have three strays that we feed outside and they have these horrible fights for territory. I wish that I could just sit them all down and tell them, "There is enough porch and food for everyone! Chill!"

    1. That would most likely because they are unaltered male. The only way to fix that is to get them neutered. I hope your community or somewhere near has a place you can get it done. There are shelters that to TNR (trap neuter release) and no harm is done to the cats, they just stop fighting and reproducing. There are also clinics where you can take the cat yourself if it's not too ferral and you can catch it and bring it in yourself for a small fee.

    2. Actually none of our straybies fight! The most we've had on the deck at the same time is three and they all took turns eating, it was the sweetest!! :)

  20. I love your kind heart and reading your blog and I've commented before about the cats (I really super super love this one) but I just wanted to spread a little awareness. I have been involved with a local no-kill cat shelter for 7 yrs and people like you are wonderful, however, you might consider helping to keep your local stray population down by looking into a local TNR (trap, neuter and release) program or a low cost spay and neuter clinic or a local cat shelter to get them off the streets, where they can be harmed by predators, like meanie humans, cars or fights with other animals. I bet you could use you popularity status and raise money for your straybies and find loving homes or raise funds to get the altered yourself.

  21. I seriously, wish I could come pick him up, he would get adopted so fast at my cat shelter. That "hair" is incredible.

  22. It makes me really happy to see someone else caring lovingly for strays! We have a mama cat and her son that have lived in our neighborhood for about 10+ years now. They're still somewhat feral, but are so sweet when we're out in the yard. I love when they come for their morning and evening visits!

  32. We've got a cat that wanders around my house, too. She looks like the mother of my little cat and it's so cute. She sat at the window at stared at the stray cat like she thought it was her mom.
I want to start feeding it, I feel so bad for it.

  35. Aw, look at him! What a cutie! I love the black and whites! My cat Marvin is black and white- and of course I think he's just the best! If Lloyd hangs around long enough, will you invite him in?

    1. Unless he's hanging around for a really long time...like years and years than no. I really don't want another kitty and I'm not 100% certain he doesn't already have a home.
