June 2011 - The Dainty Squid

The Collector: Part 10.

Thursday, June 30, 2011

The tenth (!!!) collection I'm going to be sharing is my collection of brooches! I like new ones, old ones, big ones, small ones, colorful ones and ones not so colorful, I don't discriminate! ;)
To be honest, I don't really wear them as often I'd like. In high school I had a really bad habit of losing pins and brooches, they would fall off my coat or backpack and I wouldn't notice until it was too late to look for them. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy them. I keep them in a little container that I dump out every week or so to dig through. It's the same small rush that digging through a container full of buttons gives me.

It's hard to pick favorites because I really do love them all. I try to only buy ones I'm absolutely crazy about so my collection doesn't get too out of control. Here are a few of my absolute favorites;

A replica of a Cochise County (Arizona) sheriffs badge. My dad gave me this a few years ago, he found it in a dollar box he bought at an auction. (My dad loves going to estate auctions and cannot resist buying a box of junk as long as it only costs a dollar. Literally some of the best stuff comes in those boxes that no one else wants!)
And an ugly little caterpillar with a knapsack, also from my dad. There's just something really charming about this little guy.
Of course, my enamel flower brooches are some of my favorites as well. It's kind of hard to find more of these for my collection when I refuse to pay more than $5 per piece. I've found that even thrift stores mark these darn things up.
Anyone else collect brooches?

It's the little things...

like a little hat for your cat!
I picked up this gem of a prop when Ivan and Elycia were out a few weekends ago at the junk store. Upon finding it I immediately knew one of my kitties would have to wear it. Finally I remembered to take it out of the car a few days ago and here we are now!

Doctor Octopus is the best sport. He's almost always willing to put on a silly outfit for me and pose, which I obviously take advantage of. This little brat purred the whole time the hat and sweater were on. He's so precious!

because I'm the modcloth's blogger of the moment!!
That's what I've been dying to tell you! I was making grilled cheese and checking my email on my phone when I got the news. I immediately called my mom since Kevin was at work. I said "Mom, I know you don't know what this means but Modcloth wants me to be blogger of the moment!!!" and she responds "Oh, Kaylah, that's so awesome! I'm so happy so you" there's a brief pause and she says "Modcloth is that girl that makes those hoodies you like, right?" Hahaha. She was mistaking Modcloth for Mungo Crafts. (She's so cute, I could tell you funny mom stories for days!)
The details:
hat - thrifted
belt - thrifted
shoes - c/o of ModCloth

I couldn't be more in love with my (errr, Squid's) namesake dress. The perfectly obnoxious buttons, red trim and peter pan collar are so charming. Plus 3/4 length sleeves are totally my favorite, I think they're so much more flattering than any other cut. The dress also comes with a sash to be used as a belt but I took it off and tied it around my hat instead.
You can find my interview with modcloth, as well as some other ways to style the dress (ps. it comes in two colorways) and my top picks from modcloth here.
