Book Review // Damned by Chuck Palahniuk

Tuesday, October 18, 2011

As I mentioned in my last book review (of Geek Love, which you can find here) I'm a huge Chuck Palahniuk fan. He is my all time favorite author. I have never loved the way someone writes as much as I love the way he does. I've read every book he's ever had published from cover to cover.

His newest book Damned is avaliable TODAY! I was supplied with the book back in early September by the publisher to review so I had a chance to read over the book early. (Isn't that so awesome? I might have squealed a little bit when it arrived! Just a note; had I not been given the book I would have rushed out this morning and bought it regardless. All the opinions expressed below are solely mine and are not influenced by anyone)

Damned is narrated by thirteen year old Madison Spencer, the daughter of a film star and billionaire, who dies (of what she suspects is an overdose on marijuana) and is sent to Hell, a place where the currency is candy and the landscape might possibly leave you feeling ill. Think Valley of Used Disposable Diapers and Hot Saliva Lake. Madison shares her adventures in Hell with her new pals - a cheerleader, a jock, a nerd and punk rocker.

This is Palahniuk's sickest novel yet. While possibly not as intense as his short story "Guts" that was in Haunted, it definitely has it's R-rated moments and incredibly descriptive, yet potentially offensive details - which I might add is possibly what I love the most about his writing.

Damned is a quick read and It's a damned good book. pun intended. Do you realize how hard it was to write this and and not include a pun in just about every other sentence?!  I tore through the book, every page ended with me saying "okay, just one more page." which was never the case. I'm actually considering re-reading it already - I thought it was that good!

One last thing before I wrap this review up - I just want to address Palahniuk fans who maybe weren't too impressed with his most recent works  (I don't know who you're trying to kid - Pygmy was amazing!) - Please give this book a chance! It's nothing short of amazing. You will not be disappointed!

Anyone rush out to the bookstore today to pick up Damned? I can't wait to hear what everyone thinks of it.
xoxo

  2. Wow that is so awesome that the publisher sent you the book! Do you get other books sent to you by publishers? Congrats on that!

As for the book... You make it sound really intriguing but I don't know if I could handle very disturbing details. I'm definitely curious though!

What book would you recommend for a Palahniuk newbie?

  3. Ohh this sounds good! I read Invisible Monsters last summer and now I'm reading Lullaby. Both of them have been nothing short of amazing and like you said, absolute page turners. I'm not through Lullaby yet but Invisible Monsters pretty much had my jaw dropped for like the last 1/4 of the book! The twists and turns in his writing.. wow. I'll have to pick this one up next! :)

  4. Personally i agree with you, even though i didn't really like the ending (at all). But i guess, having read Palahniuk's plans with this book, i already expected something like it.

  5. it must have come out earlier in the UK - my hubby and I read it a few weeks back and LOVED it! We're big Chuck Palahniuk fans too :)

  6. Liz, that's a hard question - Rant, Survivor, Diary or Lullaby are all a good place to start for someone who has never read Palahniuk. They're all great!! :)

  7. Okay, this totally perked my interest! First, I love stories that star young adults or teenagers, because while I am 22, I often feel more like I'm 16 or so. :P I'm a big kid!

Second, I love the darker side of life, so I think this may be right up my alley!

  8. I've seen this recently, and was so excited to see he came out with another book! His writing is so different from other people, and I find the beauty in his sort of morbidity. haha! Weird? Anyhow, I can't wait to read this one!

  9. I had no idea he wrote another book, but I love him! A friend got me into his books in High School and I've read most, but this sounds like such a good book! I love the cover, too!
Thanks for the review, I'm definitely going to pick this up!

  10. thank you for this review!
I typically stick to the likes of Michael Conelly, Stephen King, Stephen Leather, James Herbert and most recently Lee Childs so really looking to broaden my reading to different genres, I think I will definitely give this book a shot :)

  19. I'm glad you threw in that last bit. I almost hated Tell All, so I was worried about this one (but I'm with you- Pygmy was awesome! I just think that you have to have that Clockwork Orange weird English reading skill to enjoy it.)

  20. I'm also a Chuck-aholic, but I won't lie, I could barely get through Tell-All, (though I agree, Pygmy was pretty great once you got into the writing style.) Can't wait to pick up this one tonight after work!

  21. I am too a huge fan of Mr. Palahniuk & was fortunate enough to win an ARC. I haven't finished it yet, but I am thoroughly pleased with it (so far). It has a lot of the same feel his earlier works convey & I am eagerly awaiting the final pages.

  23. My husband found your blog via Chuck Palahniuk's Facebook and he thought your name sounded familiar (he bought me one of your zipper bags back around Christmas time). He is thoroughly impressed you got a copy early! And maybe a tad jealous;) We'll be pre-ording it for sure!!

***PS he got a little perturbed at that one comment that girl made. Some people..sheesh.

  24. Sounds good, except, you know, it's impossible to OD on marijuana, and no one's ever died from it... :)

  25. You just reminded me I need to order it! I also went ahead and ordered Invisible Monsters (someone borrowed my copy and never returned it) and I can't wait to re-read that. It also reminds me I need to re-read a majority of his books! It's been a while! I got so happy reading this book review because I am a huge huge fan of Chuck Palahniuk!

  26. I got a little burned out on Palahniuk from Haunted forward... but I think it may be time to pick him up again. Thanks for the review!

  27. Ames, please take into consideration the fact it's narrated by a 13 year old girl and try not to be so literal. ;)

  28. I am also a die-hard Chuck fan, but couldn't finish Pygmy (sorry!) or Tell-All, but I also got an AC of Damned and couldn't put it down! Felt like it was a bit of a throw-back to his earlier works. Glad to see so many others are liking it too! 29. I just got it last night and stayed up until after 3:00 this morning reading! :P There are definitely some crazy sick parts haha, but it SO good so far. I'm only like two-thirds of the way, but I can never get over how freaking awesome Chuck Palahniuk's writing style is- my favorite being his repeater lines in all of his books- "I may only be 13 but..." "I am Jack's raging bile duct.." etc. :P

  30. Chuch is my favorite and while I was disappointed with Pygmy and Tell All, I picked up Damned yesterday and can tell I'm going to love this trilogy! What's ever better is he's going to be in my town tomorrow night doing a reading at a local bar and I am just so incredibly excited. Never thought I might actually get to be in the same room as him!

  33. i just wanted to let you know i downloaded this book onto my phone after reading this... I'm now 82% of the way through and I only downloaded the night before last- this is the fastest i've ever read a book!
love it, thank you for the suggestion!

  34. I rushed out and bought Damned, too, but haven't started it yet (stuck on another book.) I have to admit I haven't enjoyed his last few books (Snuff was awful, in my opinion. Pygmy was alright, and I can't even remember Tell All but I don't think I hated it, at least.) But since he's my favourite author I don't think I'll ever stop rushing out to buy his books. I'm kind of cautiously hopeful. Still looking forward to reading it though!
