Jo Totes "Betsy" camera bag review

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

I'm sure by now most everyone knows that there are stylish alternatives to those boring black camera bags. But thorough reviews are few and far between. So I'd like to show you a little bit more about Jo Tote's newest camera bag, Betsy and tell you why I love it so much!
First, lets have a little over view with the help from the bag's description. Betsy is made from top quality faux leather, comes with three adjustable interior pads, two straps (cross body and shoulder) and a removable shoulder pad. Betsy comes in three colors - black, chocolate and mustard.
------------------
This bag is the perfect size! It easily holds my Instax Mini 7s, an extra package of film, a 18-50mm lens, and my Canon 60D with my go-to lens, the 50mm 1.4, attached. These are the few things that are ALWAYS in a camera bag, no matter what. I'm sure I could fit more if I rearranged but this is all I really need to carry. (I'm trying to quit carrying more than I need, sore backs are no fun!) Even with all these things that bag is still pretty light, and doesn't hurt my shoulder.
The bag closes with a zipper and flap. I normally don't zip it so I can easily and quickly access my camera. The flap doesn't have any time of closure but doesn't have any problems staying shut either.

The Betsy has quite a few pockets, which might be one of my favorite features (I love pockets!)There are two pockets on the front of the bag. They have hidden magnetic closures and are very secure. In the left one I've been keeping my macro filters, and in the right one my iphone and camera remote.
The flap has a pocket as well. At first I was a little baffled as to what I might keep in it but I've come to find it's perfect to keep my instax photos in while I'm out and about.
Finally, the back has a big pocket which is the perfect size for an iPad (both the newer and older version) but since my iPad rarely leaves my desk (I mainly use it to watch movies on) I use this pocket for chapstick, money, my mushroom hunting permit and other random things that normally float around in a purse.
Overall, I HIGHLY recommend this bag and Jo Totes. It's absolutely perfect - stylish, comfortable, and best of all it keeps my camera safe and sound, which is the utmost important thing when choosing a camera bag.
I also own the Millie (which you can see me wearing here) and since getting them I haven't used my purse once while going out - I'm always carrying one of my Jo Totes camera bags. It's perfect because as I'm sure I've mentioned before I pretty shy about taking photos in public and now that I always have my camera with me it's getting easier for me to snap photos in public. It's also really nice to be wearing a camera bag that doesn't scream "look at me, I'm holding thousands of dollars worth of equipment!" like I feel like a black one sporting the word "canon" does.

If anyone else has any other questions just let me know!
xoxo!
ps. for a better idea of the size of the bag you can see me wearing it in this post.

It's funny, because I would pick the exact same bags in the exact same color :) Mustard and moss are the best!

  13. I'm glad to hear I'm not alone in being a little sheepish about taking snaps in public - you pics are always so amazing and abundant I'd have pegged you for being snap happy without a second thought :) This bag is amazing. I quite like the black millie version too and it's not on my wish list. Thanks for the really helpful review :)

  18. I want one of these so much. I'm a photographer, and I really hate carrying around my black camera bag PLUS my purse... so I love the idea of combining the two (plus there's also the point you made about making it obvious you're carrying expensive equipment--that's always bothered me). I might just have to save up a bit of money to buy one of these. Then again, I also have a birthday coming up... Hmmmm.

  19. I sure do love the Betsy bag in mustard - I would probably use it for an everyday bag too! (Diapers, sippy cups, snacks, etc. would fit perfectly.) ;)

  26. I thought the flap had a pocket in it, but couldn't tell from the website! My friend Patchie has the Millie in the plum color, but I am pretty sold on this model in mustard. Thanks! Your review was even more informative than the website! haha

  30. I know you don't like people copying your style (at least when it comes to tattoos) but I just have to tell you how much I love your shoes and how long I've been trying to find this kind of shoes forever (literally. Must be 3 years by now.), and I'm begging you: please tell me where you got them. I promise I will NOT buy them, NOT wear them, NOT copy you. I will just look at them in real life, and I'll be smiling till the end of time. (theatrical? naaaaah.)

    lots of love from berlin.

  31. oh, frl. blume, please don't make me sound like a crazy lady! i want people to be inspired by the way i dress! the shoes are from wantedshoes.com, GO BUY THEM! :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Well, if YOU say so, I'll definitely buy them (when they are in stock again.). ;) and i'm definitely so much inspired by the way you dress - I can't even put it into words without sounding like a crazy 13-year-old who has a crush on Nick Carter.
I'm going to buy some food-colours now to see if I can copy your awesome cupcakes and if I'm able to convert the cup-sizes into "gramm". I'll post some pictures if they turn out. :)

  34. Hi Kaylah!
Nice review, and just what I've been looking for :)
How do the dividers stick onto the inside of the bag? Are they velcro?
    Thanks :D

  35. Thank you for the review, its the best i've seen so far. I've been looking for camerabags reviews a lot. It still bothers me the most that it is Faux leather the most bags have. Now i've been searching for a real leather one on etsy... and found :)

  36. Great post, great blog. I was wondering how the bag wears while actively shooting? In other words, if you wear the bag while taking pics, does it stay put or does it slide off awkwardly, is it comfortable to wear while shooting?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Now that you've had this bag for awhile....Are you still loving it? How has it held up? Is there enough padding still?

    1. Absolutely! Nothing has changed, there are only a few little scratch on it now after nearly a year of rough use.
      :)
