Chicks! - The Dainty Squid

Chicks!

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Without a doubt, my favorite thing to photograph is animals. So when my dad got some chicks I knew I had to go over and snap some photos. They are too cute for words, and the little noises they make - oh my gosh, they're lucky I don't just squeeze them!
I'm excited to watch them grow. I'm not a big fan of chickens, I actually think they're rather scary but we'll see how I feel about these ones when they get bigger.

  3. My first comment, hi! I think the 'ball of fluff' yellow ones look cuter than the others! I put some pics of some sheep (UK) on my blog recently and some people thought they were scary. People's opinions on what they think is scary vary so much.

  5. Little chickies are so cute :) If you keep handling them as they grow they should be pretty friendly once they get big-maybe less scary that way :)

  8. Ohmigoodness those chicks are sooo cute!! I would definitely want to squish them too!

I can't wait til the day when I can have some of my own again. I had them when I was little and am currently having a tough time convincing my other half that we need some. ;)

A lot of people are scared of them - but the ones I had were so tame they were like pets. I think it might be like when people hate cats - they've just never met a cool one.

  12. Sooo cute!! These pics are kind of a throwback for me. When I was in high school I lived out in the country and my mom hatched some eggs that a friend gave her. We kept the incubator in the living room. It was pretty cool... and yes, it WAS hard to not squeeze the life out of those cute fluffy little chicken nuggets.

  20. Ahhh soooo cute!! I can't WAIT to have my own home with some land so I can rescue some chickens. One of the shelters near me adopts out farm animals of all kinds. I'd love to have chickens and ducks someday...

  21. I had a pet chicken when I was little, she was blind and was always making peep sounds so I had named her peeps.

  22. You got about a month before they are HUGE. So take advantage of the little cuteness now, it vanishes rather fast.

  23. I had baby chicks when I was younger. They are SUPER adorable and fun to watch as they grow up. I was definitely a little scared of them when they were adult hens though. They have talons and sharp little beaks!

  25. Chickens only scare me when they suddenly fly up out of the way of something! Generally, they look so confused with life that i figure they aren't bothered by me!

  28. Those are adorable! I never cared for chickens but to anyone who feels like that, I think they should take a look at this blog, http://scratchandpeck.blogspot.com/ and start from the beginning. I swear, I'm not a spambot or publicity intern, I just stumbled upon the blog one day and had to sit there and read all about chickens.

  29. I heard in the 50s that at easter they would sell chicks dyed different pastel shades as novelties for children and families. I am not promoting that practice but how great would your nails theoretically look holding pastel rainbow chicks?!
if you don't mind my asking, is that your dad'shands? cuz he is pretty badass if so.

  30. OH MY GOSH!!! So adorable! I love animals, especially baby animals!

You know what animals I love and would like to photograph? The "ugly" ones. Like warthogs. Everyone thinks they're ugly, but I think they are adorable!!!

  31. I have never held a chick, but we have chickens where I live. They have been full grown chickens for almost a decade and recently started laying eggs again, which is apparently very strange behavior, and they are also apparently really old. We used to have a twenty-year-old rooster, too, but he finally died. He was blind and would crow every fifteen minutes all day. Oy.

  33. Chickens make the best pets! I became vegan very shortly after co-parenting some chicklets with my best friends. They are so friendly and rewarding! Queso our star lady come and hops up on your lap when you call her name and even comes in the house sometimes! I love chickies! <3
