I've moved into a new craft room...

I've mentioned briefly on the blog about flooding in my basement. We made it through the summer with little water in the basement but the last few weeks have been terrible. Rain, rain and more rain have led to one heck of a stinky mess down there. It's a complete bummer to desert the beautiful room we all worked so hard on, spent so much time and money on but my business isn't worth the risk. I have tons of money in fabric, equipment and supplies down in my craft room and I just can't risk them getting wet, or smelly.

So, we've spent the last few weekends clearing out the spare bedroom (which was previously home to boxes of things that never got put away!). I'm moving in! I have mixed feelings on the situation. Like I said we spent lots of time and money making the basement a wonderful space for me to work. I'm going to miss the heck out of that space and all that storage. It's a sad process moving everything upstairs.

But on the other hand I've wanted to be in the spare bedroom since day one. I'm a light snob, plain and simple. If the room I'm in doesn't have oodles of natural light chances are I'm going to be whining. My new craft room has three big windows that just fill the whole space with light. It's wonderful, I'm able to work with the lights off and take beautiful photos (they were always yellowy when I took them in the basement.)

Another plus is that the spare bedroom is fairly small, and I like to nest. Excuse me for complaining about something really dumb - but the basement was just hairball too big and I never quite felt comfortable down there. While I'm not sure right now where everything will fit in the spare bedroom, it is so cozy in there.

I bought a nice big desk with a hutch attached for the new craft room (hurry fedex, I'm dying to set it up!). I'm looking forward to decorating and making the room an inspiring space. I'll make sure to keep you all updated with photos as it progresses.
xoxo

  1. Aw, that's such a shame after how much work was put into your craft room. But if it's flooding then you don't really have much choice! And at least you have a nice light room now. :)

Any idea what your going to do with your old craft room yet? And I've just gotta say, your tights in that picture are awesome!

  2. For some reason the pictures in this post make me feel really happy c: I hope you'll be okay in your new craft room.. And I hope you don't mind me asking, but what dye did you use for your hair in the picture? I've been wanting to change my colour for some time now and that colour is beautiful!

  3. Katie, storage. Everything has to be kept off the ground and in plastic totes but it's somewhere to keep extra stuff, and holiday decorations. I'd like to find a better use for it but haven't really thought of one yet.

    Sarah, Thanks, It's feria r68.

  4. Good luck with your new craft room! I'm sure you'll feel like home in no time! It seems that this move is for the best. I've experienced a similar situation a couple of weeks ago, only worse! My whole house flooded due to the incredible amount of rain and many of my stuff got damaged! Thank God most of my supplies were on high places.
I love this picture of you! So colorful, sunny and happy, as you are always!

  6. That so sad about the flooding. I used to live in the most beautiful medieval town here in England that the river flooded every year, so many people year after year lost so much stuff, but could never sell their houses and leave because no one would buy their houses, so devastating!

On a positive note, I love that ribbon with the mushrooms! Hope you ejoy your new cosy space

  13. sounds like a bittersweet moment. hope you end up being in love with your new work space. just a little tip about have yellowy photos, (not sure what kind of camera you have) but on my canon, you just go into the menu and change the white balance. the lower the number the cooler the photo, so you can help fight the yellow tones without going though the troubles of post processing. Hope that helps ")

  21. Aww I'm sure you'll love your new craft room once it's all set up, moving can be unsettling though. I am also a light snob, I love that you called it that! I'm always complaining that the natural light in my apartment is horrible, I can't stand it! So as a result, I have about a million lamps that are on at all times! It's very hard to craft with poor lighting =(

  22. this sounds like a wonderful and positive change! i am sure it sucked to move but in the long run it is the best and sounds so much more awesome! can't wait to see the end product. am jealous just thinking about it!!!

  24. Oh no! :( My husband I bought a house this year and we've gotten flooding in the unfinished (but it's also storage and a laundry room because we dont have a garage) part of the basement and a few times in our family room down there. We have yet to find someone willing to fix it :(

I'm a light snob too as far as doing crafts and reading. I could eventually put my craft space in the basement and have a ton of space but there's one small window and I much prefer natural light. And I prefer a smaller space to work in, it's nuts!

  30. Oh I totally understand what you mean! Natural light and cosy spaces, that makes it a lovely craft room! It's so sad to leave the space in the basement where you guys put so much work and effort in, but most important is that you feel happy in your working space, right! ^_^ Happy sewing!

  40. Your basement craft/work room was beautiful...but I remember your old one back at your parents house...it was amazing...so I know your new space is going to be super sweet! It sucks that you have to change, but your soooo the type to turn it into a lovely change of pace! I too plan to send a gift (had it put aside for awhile) you really inspire me so...and I found the perfect trinket for you! Keep an eye towards your mail...hint...I know you have a bunch of em..but can one more ceramic lovely hurt? Hearts, Janna Lynn

  41. God that sucks Kaylah, I'm so sorry to hear about your basement! :( I hope you find that moving isn't such a bad thing... maybe one day you can move back down to your little craft dungeon!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Janna Lynn, eeee! I can't wait, thank you so much.

Melissa, oh it totally is! I'm loving the light!! :)

Danielle, I'm not so sure I'm going to want to go back to the dungeon...

  43. Oh no! on the positive side, at least it didn't super badly flood while you were sleeping or our or something, and ruin all of your supplies and equipment.
Maybe the smaller room will be more productive, having everything within reach, and nice and cozy :)

For the basement, you should TOTALLY set it up as an indoor cat play center, haha with like cat posts, towers, shelves along the walls, to climb, maybe even an elaborate mini rope/wood hanging bridge from one end of the room to the other (low to the ground but just high enough off) a place they can go nuts in, well I have this picture in my head of it,for my cats, in my own house someday, but I think your cats would love it too, haha :)

can't wait to see the new sewing room all set up <3
    xx

  45. Hey! May I mention that I am seriously in LOVE with your blog! It is fantastic! I had a question though what would you suggest as a good sewing project for a beginner? I just spent my first chick-fil-a paycheck(s) on a sewing machine and a book on how to sew. so what would be something easy to start off with?
